Joe Esposito - You're the Best (theme from Karate Kid)

Try to be best
‘Cause you’re only a man
And a man’s gotta learn to take it

Try to believe
Though the going gets rough
That you gotta hang tough to make it

History won't repeat itself
Try and you’ll succeed

Never doubt that you’re the one
And you can have your dreams!

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own

Fight ‘til the end
Cause your life will depend
On the strength that you have inside you

Ah you gotta be proud
starin’ out in the cloud
When the odds in the game defy you

Try your best to win them all
and one day time will tell
when you’re the one that’s standing there
you’ll reach the final bell!

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ho-how-ho-own

INSPIRING GUITAR SOLO

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own

Fight ‘til you drop
never stop
can’t give up
Til you reach the top (FIGHT!)
you’re the best in town (FIGHT!)
Listen to that sound
A little bit of all you got
Can never bring you down

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!

repeat to fade, occasional background shouts of “Oh Ye-eah!”

I think we all know that the song we're looking for, the song that best represents Obama's election campaign is Listen to Your Heart by (wait for it....) ROXETTE!

I know theres something in the wake of your smile.
I get a notion from the look in your eyes, yea.
Youve built a love but that love falls apart.
Your little piece of heaven turns too dark.

Listen to your heart
When hes calling for you.
Listen to your heart
Theres nothing else you can do.
I dont know where youre going
And I dont know why,
But listen to your heart
Before you tell him goodbye.

Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile.
The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yea.
Theyre swept away and nothing is what is seems,
The feeling of belonging to your dreams.

And there are voices
That want to be heard.
So much to mention
But you cant find the words.
The scent of magic,
The beauty thats been
When love was wilder than the wind.

Obviously a little difficult to insert a name there.

Well, it was a bit obvious, but that's the presidential race effectively over already; if things are tight in Indiana and Georgia - and Obama is even favoured in the latter - McCain is utterly slaughtered. The senate seat in NC has apparently been effectively conceded, too, which means the Democrats have at least 58 (most likely 59, with a probable runoff to give the chance of 60 in Georgia) senate seats.

It's looking very, very good... I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. Pennsylvania and Florida are going Obama's way pretty strongly right now.

Hi all. I'm sitting here nervously waiting for places to report and realized that I miss y'all. Hi.

PENNSYLVANIA!

And hello, Mazarine! Hello Joy!

We are excited.

Yo, grant!

I got no TV so I'm following Oliver Burkman's Guardian liveblog and watching google's slightly slow map. Where else should I be looking

and grinning?

Grant, hi baby!

North Carolina. I'm gonna be completely incapable of wiping my smirk off my face and get my ass fired if we go blue.

I am AMAZED and SO HAPPY my kind of home state of Pennsylvania went blue. In the next 10 minutes, I'll see if my new home state of New Mexico will do so as well!

joy, you can look at politico, huffington post has a great deal of exit polling data, all of the big news organizations have the county by county results as they come in. CNN is being very conservative in their calls tonight, most calls long after the other networks, it's interesting. Go Kay Hagen! Go Obama! I can't believe I'm using exclamation points. Fox just called Ohio for Obama, holy shit!

Indeed, holy shit. I mean, holy shit!

Don't be put off, this is what exclamation points are actually for

I'm digging the slow-but-info-intensive TPM map.

And ABC's stream is running in the background.

"I think Senator McCain is a great patriarch... no, patriot, not patriarch," the ABC lady just said.

Ron Paul, by the way, is doing quite well in Louisiana.

Iowa for Obama. It's really over, for all intents and purposes. If Florida and NC go Obama, maybe Virginia, it's almost like a reverse Reagan.

Can I say that my faith in the American people is restored?

Well, no. But I'm so god damned relieved. It's going to be very difficult for President Obama (how great is that!), and because he won't be able to make America happyland in four years, it's going to be another bumpy road, but damn. We've got to just revel in this moment.

Wow.

The victory party in Chicago does look a bit dreadful though, like the Stones at Altamont, or Oasis at Knebworth.

I hope the Obama team's laid on the appropriate facilities.

Colorado??

It's so over. It looks like Obama's going to take Virginia and Colorado, with a chance at Indiana and North Carolina. Factor in the three West coast states that are a virtual lock, and it looks like an utter slaughter. Loving it.

Also loving that New England now has no Republican Congressmen. Go us! At least until Lieberman finally goes over all the way, the little toad.

Anyone think there'll be a wingnut right party peeling off the Republicans now? Maybe a new lease on life for the Constitution Party?

Heh. Nader got 1% of Pennsylvania.

And Virginia is looking mighty blue. Wooo.

Networks called it. You should see the size of the headline at Talking Points Memo. Mr. Marshall's been waiting for this for a long time.

Now comes the fun part. Fix it, Mr. President. Make it work again.

Funny, I only now realized Obama is GIVING A VICTORY SPEECH.

This should be something.

He can, like, SPEAK!

Jesse Jackson is weeping on C-Span.

"The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly."

McCain is speaking well, too. Teddy Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington.

Oh, and sympathy for Obama's grandmother.

Offering him good will and support. I simply can't imagine Bush giving a concession like this. The wind is changing.

McCain was so much more gracious than his supporters there. You realize what an undercurrent of resentment resides there, much like many democrats have had last few elections (though I'm biased, and think that their anger is based in ignorance and fear). I've seen so much bile spewn about Obama, it's not going away soon. But like me, alot of people are very satisfied right now.
I walked outside a few minutes ago, just to take a break from it all, breathe some fresh air. It's a beautiful night, cool, and the sky was littered with stars, the milky way was a cloudy slash. I just stood out there and looked up. Not to be excessively sentimental, but it felt good to be alive.
Well, maybe it is excessively sentimental. But, damn. Right now, it feels good to be alive.

That Obama operation knows how to work a crowd.

Gore Vidal's a bit nuts, innit? What a magnificent speech by McCain, though. Regaining some of the class and respect he lost in the last year... a bit of the old man still left. Nice.

First black president. Jesse Jackson crying on camera. This is so sweet. Can't wait for the victory speech.

Jesus, the reddit.com comment threads are packed with people from Japan, Finland, Nepal - they've been up all night, some of them, waiting to see how this turned out. America is getting a lot of congratulations.

And someone did this:

McCain's speech was total class. Hopefully we'll see a return to the pre-2000 McCain now that the carrot of the Presidency has been taken off the stick.

Excellent speech from Obama. The old showbiz whore in me was hoping for more pizazz... but that was the speech he needed to make.
