It's an odd one, isn't it?
It seems fairly harmless to me for these fellows to begin a 'lets all change our suit-names to Avengers on the same day!' themed-thread, and invite others to join them. The error in judgement they made was to post it in Comics, and without an abstract. In their defence, one might argue that it would be largely Comics stalwarts who would find this fun, and that an abstract reading 'pretend you're one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes by, um, altering what you're called on screen!' would have rather spoiled the impact of the thread. Then again, if Comics is supposed to be a cut above the usual Millarworld / Byrne Robotics tosh, this sort of thing might set a rather depressing precedent. Perhaps best in the Convo.
The unnamed Mod's decision to move the thread seems reasonable, then. The new abstract, though, seems increasingly mean-spirited, and as XK pointed out, unnecessarily eye-stabby for anybody who has been at the sharp end of custody struggles. (My personal take on this is that while I've been at the very sharp end of this as a kid, I still found the abstract fairly amusing, although not amusing enough to discount the feelings of XK when she made them known). So on the one hand we have a group of posters who didn't quite play things quite by the book, but whose intention was benign, and on the other a mod (and those who ok'd the modding action) who played things absolutely by the book, but in a manner that squashed some harmless fun, and offended the sensibilities of at least one much valued member of Barbelith.
Until the mod in question identifies themselves and tells their side of this sorry tale, I guess the lesson we've all learned is that the next time we want to get a group of fellow board members together and simultaneously change our names to those of a super-team, we should:
A) Do it in Convo.
B) Write an abstract
C) Choose a super-team that hasn't been co-opted by an unpleasant collection of men from failed relationships, lest a mod makes with the mockery/eyestabbiness. Might I suggest the Inhumans, or the WildC.A.T.S? The Great British Public hasn't got a fucking clue who they are.
Good luck in 28 days, Avenger-chaps! |
