I'd also warn against using somebody else's design without first seeking their permission.

I quite realize this is a problem and I would like to say that I'm in no way attempting to...impersonate Barbelith, or put across that it is in any way my design and or intellectual property, I'll put something up on my Beta version of the site soon here, so clear that up. I have sent Tom a message, but I'm sure he's far to busy to read it. So I went ahead and built anyway. If he wishes that I take it down then I will in a heartbeat.

E. Randy, I appreciate what you're saying, but:

Inherit the design and you'll inherit all of the baggage that people here have.

Clean sweep or I'm afraid it's destined to failure.

At this moment in time, I wouldn't touch a Barbelith v.2.

A board with a functional administration structure and admissions system based on email registration is not the same design. It might look the same, but some of the buttons will do different things. Or just do things.

I mean, maybe a fresh look would equate to a fresh start, yeah. But looks aren't the whole of a culture, and what this seems to be (admittedly, I've only browsed a little, and only as a generic user) is a different board that's only superficially the same.

----

In a wider sense, though, it might be more efficient use of resources to focus on a particular field or forum that's not covered elsewhere - maybe Head Shop or Comics. Spreading forums like triffid seeds across the fertile ground of Web 2.0....

Working for me now. Quickly, too.

You've certainly done a lot of work here, Breefield. Are you implementing distributed moderation?

Breefield

Well, here's what we've decided to do, those who are chatting with me other on the new board. We're going to re-name the board, and re-design, and I'm taking notes of functionality to add in.

Distributed moderation? As in moderation given to users over specific boards? I'm partially done with it at the moment, I can assign moderators to specific fora in which they can edit the other user's posts, but that's the extent of the code right now, I'm going to add the ability to freeze and delete posts / topics as well. The ability to move topics will be coming along as well.

Anyhow, I bid Barbelith farewell, I understand your discretion when it comes to starting up a new Barbelith. I don't want continue promoting the new board we'll be creating though, so I'm not going to be mentioning it anymore, here atleast.

The latest member of the new board is Ganesh from London, it can't be can it?

I'm not a long time Barbelith member, more of a lurker, so I'll take it Ganesh is either an long time member or a respected one here?

Long time member who done the off a while ago, partially due to barbelith = broked I think.

Distributed moderation? As in moderation given to users over specific boards?

Perhaps. More like: As in the system of moderation whereby multiple moderators must agree to execute certain actions by voting on user requests.

No one moderator can do anything, only propose things to groups of moderators who approve or veto the proposal.

Yeah. So like when you edit your own post two mods have to vote OK, or when a mod proposes a delete three other mods have to vote OK.

Breefield, yr registration screen gives me an error in Opera. I fill in all the fields but I get a message saying "please use more than just a space or two." Gonna see if it works in Firefox... nope, same error.

I get exactly the same error as Mordant. I wanted to register so that I could say "NONONONONO!" to the mooted idea of avatars. Really, do not want.

Okay, so if we've got a reallistic alternative to this place, and it looks like it's going to be different, then I can get with that.

On the avatars question - seriously, avatars are useful. There are lots and lots of things that the majority of message boards have, that Barbelith doesn't. and the reason why those other boards have them is because they help to ensure that discussion is smooth, speedy, largely friendly. They make the acts of reading and participating in an ongoing discussion - and of being part of a working community - easier. That's why those other baords have them.

Barbelith? Doesn't have them because of snobbery. That's the sole reason.

g: A board with a functional administration structure and admissions system based on email registration is not the same design.

I know, but this design is tainted by the reality of what the board's become. I mean, I'd have some difficulty making myself eat a choclate bar that was shaped like a turd, because the bit of my brain that likes to eat chocolate is going to clash with the bit of my brain that doesn't want me to eat shit. So I'm not going to be all that tempted by a board that looks identical to a board that's become a pain in the arse to post to and be a member of through being so broken and neglected.

And linked to that, there's the problem that slavishly copying the design of a broken board means that you may not actually realise which bits were broken until you've ended up copying them across too.

There were loads of things that this current iteration of the board either ignored or lost. The lack of all those things, that's a good deal of the reason why the place has ended up as it is.

The ability to see the most recently updated thread from the main forum page - that helps to ensure that the community is a single entity. Here? The lack of that bit of functionality is precisely what led to the segregation that exists between Barbelith's various sub-folders.

Things like that. Those mistakes should not be repeated. They're elements of the visual design that eventually helped things to grind to this constantly spluttering almost-stop.

Moot point now, given that Breefield's board seems to be moving in a slightly different direction, although there are still some things on that proposed front screen knock-up that do repeat these same mistakes.

Best Barbeltih design, as far as functionality goes? Gold and white. Hands down. If any layout should be used as a point of reference or inspiration, it's that one.

On avatars, I really don't see find that they keep things any more smooth, speedy or friendly at all. Mostly, though, I just can't stand the thought of them on anything which is in any way a replacement for Barbelith because... well, I suppose it is because of snobbery of a sort, yes. For the most part, avatars personalise things in a way which I think both makes people more vulnerable and is not conducive to the more serious discussions I'd like to think could happen on the board. More specifically, if just one person had an icon with a photo of themselves and their partner or their baby, every time I saw it I'd want to scream.

As to the loss of the most recently updated topics in each forum on the front page, yeah, I'd definitely agree. That was the one thing I particularly missed when Barbelith went rainbow, and without a doubt I'm less inclined to look in certain fora if there isn't something to tell me what interesting things have recently been posted in them.

I'm sorry about the problem with that error guys. I've fixed it. I was having a problem with someone signing up with the username ' ' (just a space) anyhow, I over corrected the error and now I'm working on eliminating it.
You can sign up now.

I do miss that white design... it worked well, didn't it?

And I'm wondering what the turd analogy says about my fondness for certain unspeakable truffles.

hey, and then they've just changed back again, literally in the last 5 minutes. Apologies if this has to do with my office job's server and is not indicative of an actual change in the board's presentation -

So, what happened with 2.0? Has it mutated into something else or what? That link doesn't lead there anymore.

Did I dream it?

Am I dreaming now?

I think that people figured out that Breefield was a 16-year-old and that it wasn't going to last past summer vacation, anyway.
I wouldn't hold my breath for anything; maybe someday Tom will nostalgically pick this thing off the shelf and blow the dust off of it, or one of you old-timers that people trust will find the time and energy to bust a move, but...not likely.

Breefield
04:25 / 19.10.08
Yeah, I'm 16, but the reason it got dropped had nothing to do with summer and time. It was because nobody displayed any real interest in making it happen with the way the board was designed. People wanted a new board design, and I simply wasn't able to come up with anything that anyone likes. I really like Barbelith, and I like how it looks. But I took it down recently when I swapped servers. I'll put it back up now, but I really have no interest in making it work since no one seems interested.

Yeah, I'm 16

Interesting ... Tell me, do you sometimes feel as if people don't understand where you're coming from, as a person? Like you're talking at them, but they're not really listening?

Because I've been there, believe me. More recently than, according to some, is necessarily entirely appropriate, within the letter of 'the law'.

I own a stable of small dogs.

Do you like Rohypnols? They're a bit like Alsatians, just ... quieter, I suppose. And more friendly.
