Bear, I'm finding it hard to grow back my vegetarianism. I've never had an issue with the killing, per se, but did have an issue with how animals are kept and killed. Vegetarianism was, for me, a simple way of avoiding the whole debate. I had intended to wait till I had my own house so I could slaughter rabbits etc in a humane and jolly way. Unfortunately, it turns out I really, really, like meat. Looks like I'm just going to have to make friends with some form of super organic farmer with incredibly happy (read as "expensive") animals.
Although I spent a bad few days in an orgy of unethical eating, ("oh the bacon, oh the winkles, oh the mucus flavoured guilt"), I will be returning to the joyous ethical meats as soon as I work up the nerve to ask the butcher.

Ahh, Ofcom. From what I hear they get a marvellous press cuttings service from, erm, somewhere or other. Apparently.

greetings all; i have been lurking in the temple for months, and occasionally giggling at your cat pictures in the conversation. i'm happy to have made it over the fence to being able to post, and those are the places you'll probably see me.

i'm 31, living at the moment in culturally isolated st. louis. it's my home town but that doesn't make it any easier. i lived in new orleans for a few years, and left about a year before the disaster named katrina. my guiding obsessions are: bellydance, the history and practice of magic(k), art and music esp. the tribally traditional variety, books books books, trancework, performance art/ritual, and anything that might pick up the colors of same.

you as a gestalt entity are both (delightfully) intellectually severe and frightfully funny and it makes me so glad to meet you.

It's nice to met you as well your interests sound fabulous, alphito!

Now please start posting in the Temple on these lovely topics AT ONCE.

...was that severe and funny?

Just been given a Dogon door as a present from a friend who's been orf travelling. I've heard that Dogon archetypes are utterly unique and have a great deal of ceremonial power. Now I'm a complete dilettante where magic(k)'s concerned, but I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on some esoteric history. A simple online journal search would yield some fascinating results, no doubt, but I don't come here for the food, I come for the service. So in the inimitable Barbelith style, anybody care to fill me in?

Many thanks.

Hullo.

I gather there's been some nonsense about the boy being in rehab, and so forth. Dragging his grandmother and great aunt into the sordid events surrounding his problems with Watneys Party Seven, and the like. Well the less said the better.

There will be no more of this.

I have some experience in miltary matters (in particular, about the importance of discipline,) and I both hope and trust that I will be able to bring some of it to bear on this message board.

Pain, I've often found, has been a liberating experience - at least it's precisely the feeling of being flayed within an inch of one's life while tied to the ceiling in one's pied a terre in Bayswater that I hope to bring to the party, as it were.

Very much looking forward to interacting (is that the correct word?) with you all.

How's Alex's grandmother faring these days? She was a delightful old fussbudget, fond of the drink, if I recall correctly. Regardless-welcome to Barbelith, Alex's Father. Your brand of discipline might prove useful in dealing with various trolls and arsehats.

Quite. I once asked her how she took her scotch, to which she answered "by the pint". Delightful!

Hello all.

As an introduction, I think I will just copy the email I sent to try to negotiate the necessary requirements to join this thing. More meant to prove I'm not a bot than introduce myself, but it does the job:

-----------------------

My name is Jeremy Forbing and I want to join Barbelith.

I am a real person. I was active on the Warren Ellis Forum before the plug was pulled, and have met forum regulars (and Ellis himself) in person (he slapped me in the face, though not hard).

I write role-playing products (go to http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=3929& for a link to one example), but more often I edit them. I am the credited editor for several products published by Big Finger Games ( www.bigfingergames.com ). This is a page that references me helping found that company:
http://www.darkshire.net/~jhkim/rpg/companies/alphabetical/B.html
Here is me responding to an unfavorable review: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_reviews_info.php?products_id=6562&reviews_id=13615&

I have a myspace, which allows me to keep annoying Ellis (
http://www.myspace.com/37881175 ) and an attached blog (
http://blog.myspace.com/37881175 )

I am also a stage actor in the San Francisco Bay Area, and this theatre's publicity page: http://www.altarena.org/press/2006/asyoulikeit/index.html has photos of me (the 2nd and 5th ones down) in a recent production of Shakespeare's As You Like It. The East Bay Express has a review here:
http://www.eastbayexpress.com/Issues/2006-07-12/culture/onstage.html that calls my performance in that show "overwrought," and seems to be saying that in a bad way. This badly designed page speaks of my directing a production of Much Ado About Nothing: http://www.gnosistheatrecompany.org/muchado_page.htm

There is more detritus of my life scattered across the Internet, mostly embarassing, if you care to look for it.

If you require further proof my non-botness, feel free to email me.

---------------------------

That's me in a nutshell. Hello everyone!

/me starts rubbing shoulders with established members.

Hey, I'm as uncomfortable as you with this whole situation, but I'm just doing what the first post said...

Seriously though, I'm just swinging by to introduce myself before I go diving head first into the community-proper.
My name is Corey, though I call myself Jack on all but 3 of the internets.
I co-founded, write-for and webmaster wastrelmag.com, and spend way too much time on nexuswar.com.
Offline I work in a bookshop, I read, I write, and I drink.

That's probably enough for now, but I'm sure you'll all see more of me around these parts in the coming weeks.

Hello, Mr F, pleased to meecha. Nice to see all your stuff, but it's a bit brave to start telling us all about yourself. There are a few mildly unstable people who have caused grief for other posters in the past few years, so it's generally not a great idea to be so upfront about who you are. That said, pull up a crumpet and make yourself comfortable. Tea is at five, and make sure you use an antimacassar if you're going to use the sofa.

That's certainly not required.

I asked them to. It will make the merger with the John Byrne forum less painful.

I love that the JBF forum currently has a poster whose real name is the same as a TV entertainer of yesteryear whose puppet dog was big on expectoration...
...and he's getting pissed off with people pointing it out.

Oh! I always thought the dog was called Spit-roast, how embarassing! My opinion of Bob might have been misguided.

Maybe the JBF forum poster is the bespoke candle maker?

Au contraire, Quants- look at the picture. IT'S THE SAME GUY!!!

(Incidentally, self-pimpage ahoy- once, in an acid-and-booze-induced frenzy, myself and some friends pruduced this tribute to the great man. You'll have to scroll down a ways to find the link, but you'll spot it when you do. Apologies for the crude and largely unfunny nature of some of the lyrics, but it was about 15 years ago, and we were stunningly trashed).
