Loving the racial sensitivity in that article. Well done, Blogwood!

But she's not white! Yes. She's also not Tracy-Ann Oberman. Cockwits.

I can understand why people are excited about the trailer if they're hot for Torchwood anyway, but it looked pretty hokey to me. Doctor Who trailers sometimes push my buttons because they flash up characters I might recognise from decades of Who history (such as Daleks) but without any such heritage or long-term investment, is it exciting to see the BBC's OK special effects of a generic alien and someone with dayglo vapour coming out of them, and to hear a roll-call of people who so far (with the exception of one Who supporting character) mean nothing to viewers?

To be fair, I have never got into Spooks either, and this looked a bit like Spooks with OK-sfx aliens.

Ms Wonderstarr - just out of curiosity, do you feel that the BBC should avoid doing SF until they can do so with SFX that rate above 'OK'?

If it was possible to bet on this show being a foolish mistake as far as most viewers were concerned, I'd happliy enough hand over my life savings to William Hill.

Sadly though, and I have checked, you can't really do that.

But I would have done, if I could.

I see what you mean. "SFX" isn't just one thing though ~ there is a scale of special effects in terms of ambition, scope and magnitude, and I think to be honest the BBC does stretch too far. The Daleks flying out of a Canada Wharf tower at the end of the final Doctor Who is an example, for instance. Maybe some of the Zeppelin CGI sequences in the first Captain Jack episode. They broke me out of the fiction and in the former case actually looked a bit comical and embarrassing.

Most other effects sequences in the last two Doctor Who series I found quite impressive, considering that they obviously aren't working with the same budget as a Hollywood blockbuster. I think you can use that kind of budget intelligently and attempt modest sfx though; effects that still convince and create a plausible uncanny or alien phenomenon, rather than trying to reach for something you can't convincingly achieve.

True, the Torchwood trailer didn't really look awful and I was being a bit "difficult" above. It is an interesting broader question though. I see what you mean and I hope you maybe see what I mean.

This touches on the announcement that many of S3's Who episodes would be set on Earth due to budget constraints. It would reason it would be even tighter for Torchwood, a show that has yet to prove itself.

09:42 / 10.10.06
The first full trailer for Torchwood shows a partially converted Cyberman; it is unclear whether it is a product of the Mondas Cybermen or the ones from Cybus Corporation, both of which have been known to use elecrical shocks to stun or kill.

I haven't gotten to seeing the trailer yet. Is this true?

Keeping with the general apocalyptic themes of the last episodes of both Doctor Who seasons the final ep of Torchwood is apparently called "End of Days" (hopefully guest-starring Duh Senatuh).

Ms Wonderstarr - I can see what you are getting at but I guess I approach from the opposite angle that I would hate to see SF shows being brought down by a limit on imaginations - I'd rather see interesting engaging stories told with special effects that occasionally fail to meet feature film standards than for people to have not made the attempt to tell those stories in the first place...

Some unpleasant news for those hoping to catch Torchwood on BBC 1. Reported on several sites, including the one Kali linked to above, the first episode of TW will be aired simultaneously on BBC 1 and BBC 3, with the second episode following immediately afterwards on BBC 3. However, BBC 1 won't be airing any more episodes until the new year.

Double post ahoy!

Seems to be. Look here, at about the twenty second mark and again a few seconds later for a woman with partial cyber armour. The face and abdomen of the woman are exposed and it seems to be Captain Jack that she's electrocuting.

Captain Jack, no less, wearing a very Mal Reynolds outfit.

I saw ads of Captain Jack in full grimy trenchcoat regalia pointing a gun off into the distance plastered all over double decker buses this morning. Which was nice.

John Barrowman, I have to admit, is quite fit.

This is true but I love him all the more for it. Is it wrong to say that the UK supports such an openly gay actor better than here in the States? I get the feeling that Barrowman wouldn't have as good as a career if he were as--please don't kick me for saying this--"out" here in America.

Aha! All is confirmed. Sunday 22nd, Eps 1 and 2 on BBC Three, to be repeated on BBC2 on the Wednesday.

Yesterday my co-worker and I were lamenting, "Dammit, BBC gets all the stuff we want to see. Stupid American television."

Kali, a point could be made that the Scissor Sisters are more popular in the UK than US, however, let's not get carried away, Barrowman is hardly high profile over here, despite the relative success of Doctor Who I suspect most people wouldn't recognise him if you should a photo on the high street.

Not recognise him? But that chiseled jaw!!!

They'd probably recognise him from his role as a judge on "there's something about Maria"

Lama glama
17:36 / 11.10.06
Or even his role as a judge on "How do you a solve a problem like Maria?"

But, yeah, despite that chiseled jaw I doubt anybody but Whovians or people who have seen him in the odd musical would recognise him.

I'm getting more excited about this as the days pass by. I really hope that it doesn't fall apart horribly. Cube, have you seen a preview yet? Able to tell us whether it's a hit or shit?

The Torchwood website launched today. Unfortunately, none of the video content can be viewed from outside of the UK. Ho hum.

Annoyingness follows for those who want to stay pure:

My considered and carefully non-spoily opinion of Ep1 is: it's OK. Effects are pretty much non-existent, there are a couple of "oohh.. coool" moments, some unconvincing dialogue and some very neat dialogue, and one moment that will have us Who fanboys speculating for months.
I predict a small shitstorm when parents who have let their kids stay up to watch what they thought was simply Who-extra have their little darlings traumatised by more ketchup per minute than a visit to a Heinz factory - some VERY nasty stuff. And rude words galore.
So, yes, very promising but nothing to blow you away.

Thanks, cube. On the 23rd, I'll still be downloading this bitch.

I know that parents are going to have to explain that Torchwood is for adults. It's definitely not supposed to be Who.

Here's the link for the second trailer that started airing the other day, if anybody wants to take a look. It features a lot of cheesy smash-into-the wall kissing, purple mist shenanigans and gallons of what appears to be grape-fruit juice. I hope it's not going to be to shock-value orientated and that it actually settles down once it gets over the fact that it's an "adult" show.

All these little teases and I will still have to wait a few days after it airs so I can see it.

After seeing the trailers a thought occurred to me - Could Torchwood actually be manufacturing aliens now using technology gain from the Slitheens? Could one of these creatures be the alien featured in the trailer?

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
14:38 / 15.10.06
Well, we're meant to believe in Doctor Who that Torchwood has developed a lot of alien tech from various bits of wreckage, so it's definitely not implausible that they could be experimenting on and creating alien life-forms as well. That could easily be the case in the trailer; the hubris of man to create life, etc.

And yes Toshiko Sato is the same character that we saw in Aliens of London with the artificially created pig/alien...
