So I bought the first book last week to see what all the fuss was about. No book can be as good as everyone was saying. Could it?
Your damn right it is! I've just finished reading book 3 and had to run around the room punching the air for a bit.
What an amazing book. Let me say that again, what a fucking amazing book.
I've even bought a copy for a friend of mine cause her life is a cold and empty thing without Scott and I never do that kind of thing.
Also, I want badges.

Not many comics could elicit this reaction in a true and genuine sense, but those of us who have tasted the ambrosia of Scott Pilgrim know. Oh, we know, all right.

My, how time flies...new Scott is on its way! It seems like just yesterday that the wait for Vol. 4 would be eternal...

just found THIS on the Wizard site:

>> SCOTT PILGRIM GETS IT TOGETHER (Oni)
The latest installment of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s video game-inspired, indie rock driven, all-out action, manga-fied mega epic arrives this July! With a battle against his girlfriend Ramona’s fourth evil ex-boyfriend baring down on him, will Scott be able to get it together, or will his rock ‘n’ roll dreams fall apart?

JULY -- $11.95 From Oni Press

Amazon posted a fairly spurious listing for Scott Pilgrim Vol 4. It says it'll be released on November 14th, but I have no idea why! That's MUCH later than the absolute latest release date in my mind. August/September is what I'm saying lately.

That from O'Malley's Livejournal on May 3rd.

O'Malley also says:

Q: When will the next Scott Pilgrim book be released?
A: I don't know, but I think it's going to be scheduled for late September, which means it could be out any time between late August and late October.

ahh, ok - thanks for the correction. I knew July sounded almost too good to be true.

I don't usually expend time and pissed-offness on the frustration of waiting for things to come out, but this is getting a bit silly now.

Stop playing with our emotions here, the Internet!

I...I don't think I'll be able to hold out 'till August. I'll be in Japan by then anyway, so it looks like I'm just screwed.

I just noticed in volume one a bus goes by with an ad for Trapnest's "new" album Trigger, a fictional album by a fictional band from a manga series (later an anime series, even later two live action movies) that, upon reflection, was no doubt influential for the Scott Pilgrim series. The parallels are there: bands, romance between members of the bands, old friends who were at one time lovers and in the same band then split up and one joins a band that becomes wildly successful leaving the other to join a different band that ends up competing with former SO's band, and so on. Weird.

Whatever. Nana (the title and a running joke throughout the series. "nana" is the number seven in the japanese language, also the names of the two main characters. Puns abound) doesn't have a league of evil ex-boyfriends, Wallace Wells, or nintendo realism. Scott Pilgrim is ace, so eff you Nana.

There's some evidence that yes, Nana was self-consciously an influence of O'Malley's when plotting SP. (Admission: I haven't read it, but since Scott's adventures have irreversibly refashioned my tastes in clothes, music and women over the last eleven months, I guess it should go in the hopper.)

Manga proper is kind of a non-starter for discussion on this forum, for no adequately understood reason. I guess if it weren't, we wouldn't have to bemoan the fact that the anime-related threads in FTVT seldom have more than half a dozen contributors.

I don't think I'll be able to hold out 'till August. I'll be in Japan by then anyway, so it looks like I'm just screwed.

On the upside, you will, you fortunate swine, be in Japan, where all of the women look, dress and act like Knives, Ramona, Envy and Kim... in my fevered imagination.

Meh. I'm pretty okay with that, actually. Manga and american comics are not really the same animal, and if no one wants to talk about manga (except perhaps in regard to something like Scott Pilgrim) I'm perfectly fine with that. Likewise the anime threads. I feel that only the best, most noteworthy series should have their own threads. While I am a fan of a select few series, I have no problems labeling the rest as "emminently forgettable" (a term I've come to enjoy using).

Oh, I wasn't seriously bemoaning the lack of manga discussion here. It just occurred to me that if there were more crossover between fora based on shared interests our anime-related threads, good as they are, could be livelier. But that's a minor concern. Please pardon my threadrot.

There's some new tidbits from O'Malley in the Comics Festival! 2007 book, including a 4-page Kim Pine (!!!) story and a half-page Scott Pilgrim sushi outing. It's going to be distributed at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival on Aug 18-19, and will be online sometime after that, although you can try asking retailers who got copies in for free comic day (May 5) to see if they have any left over. (the 2005 book is already online via the above link as well)

the cover of Vol. 4, SCOTT PILGRIM GETS IT TOGETHER, is now up on O'Malley's myspace page (which I think is listed as Scott Pilgrim and not O'Malley's actual name). Don't have time now to save the pic & link it but check it out!!

I did a brief interview with O'Malley at MoCCA for my pop culture internet radio show/podcast, and he said that the Scott series will be 6 books total. So we've got three more to look forward to -- and he said he's already looking at ideas for what he'll do next once he finishes the series.

Just read a copy of Vol 3, OMG I fell in love with it all over again .

The title panel for Chapter 18 DESTROY ALL VEGANS just makes me grin like a loon whenever I look at it, It's just perfectly formed in every way .

I must now lend these books to people who have not yet read them...

I predict that O'Malley will deal with at least two evil ex-boyfriends in one volume, either for brevity's sake alone, or more excitingly, because two of them have teamed up to increase their chances of defeating Scott. Of course, like all bad guy team-ups their internal divisions will be their undoing.

For my part, I think that six parts is sufficient, if only because as a rule of thumb things that come in six parts tend to be much cooler than ones that have seven.

When Ramona is first telling Scott about the evil ex boyfriends, he asks if he has to fight them all at once, and she says something like, "Not all at once. I dunno about one at a time." Which seems pretty clear foreshadowing of at least one team up. I kind of hope he finishes off the league in volume five and then there's some other, related conflict in volume six.

I once went to the Tate Gallery with Scott Pilgrim in my bag. I saw no art, I sat in the cafe and read all three of the volumes. It was worth it.

So, where do we think O'Malley is going with this whole "Ramona has a dark secret past in NYC" thing that Envy was giving her a hard time about in Vol. 3?

Also, I stand by my theory that Scott will end up with Kim Pine since every time Scott's time dating Kim is brought up, all the characters veer away from the subject - except Ramona, who wants to know more because she senses there's something special about the Kim situation...

OK, now I'm re-reading going backwards -- re-read Vol. 2 and just laughed my ass off. Love the Jason Lee-esque skateboarder-turned movie story evil ex-bf (although his being a Canadian skater-turned movie star is probably the only way in which he's like Jason Lee) going "AAAAA NOOOO AAAAA" right before he destructs.
