Oh yes, and I find O'Malley's annotatedpilgrim tag to be a less-useful-than-expected,-for-a-former-librarian,-but-still-quite-useful way cutting that wading right down.

On the bus at the end of this scene there’s an ad for the (fictional) Trapnest album, “Trigger”, from the comic Nana, by Ai Yazawa. Nana was a big inspiration when I was working on Volume 1.

Hah! No shit.

Yes.

returning to these anotations was fun.

>> Bryan Lee O'Malley: Anyway, in general, some snooty vegans claim that they are better than non-vegans in every way. I mean, physically. Somewhere along the line, my mind turned that into “vegans don’t have to breathe,” and then vegans became like Tetsuo from Akira, and that was Todd right there.

Of course. A natural progression. TETTSSUOOO!!! KAAAANNNEEDDAAA!!!

Yeah, I saw the cover posted for the next volume and my heart felt a pang. February...

Shiiit. On the one hand, great, as 15 months between volumes is surely at the upper extreme of how long we should be made to wait. On the other hand, I will be 36 by then, officially too old to be waiting around for a comic book.

Ramona looks hard as fuck there. I like it.

Also, here's some pencils with sound effects for the upcoming volume. BOK! Artlinking probably doesn't accomplish great things but I'm all twisted up from waiting for so many sweet-looking at-this-point-hypothetical comics that all the tidbits keep me going.

I need to go study how to be more like Wallace Wells and/or Kim Pine now.

It has a goldenrainbowshiny cover!

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

It's really quite good, and felt, in some intangible way, different from the other volumes in terms of tone. The focus, as suggested by the cover, was more on Ramona herself, and I liked that the ex-boyfriend battles were pretty much background material, happening while she was in the foreground. Possibly because this set of boyfriends was a little on the thin side, character-wise, but probably more because Gideon is getting so very, very close (sending Scotty Boy into conniptions!). There was quite a bit more depth to Ramona and Scott's relationship now, and O'Malley does an admirable job of destroying notions of perfect love.

1. Stephen Stills, what the hell? For the past few volumes something's up with him but I can't put my finger on it. Which is another bonus -- it feels very much like all the supporting cast (ALL OF THEM) have lives outside of Scott and go about them and periodically intersect with him, but there's an alternate O'Malley out there, writing a STEPHEN STILLS comic or an Eisner-winning WALLACE WELLS KICKS YOUR ASS. Just sayin'.

2. I love that the only way to get Scott to accomplish anything requires his friends to outright trick and manipulate him.

3. Knives gets the line for this volume, hands down.

4. Knives needs to get over it, already.

I just read it for the second time after running to a comic shop yesterday, picking it up, devouring it, and being too depressed to write anything about it. Some of the depression was because I had just finished it and would have to wait another year or two for the final book. But at least some of the depression came from the plot.

SPOILERS AHOY!

The book is aptly named, not merely a repeat of Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Everything really is stacked against our poor Scott as his love and friends start to collapse around him. Scott still has the social and mental maturity he gained in Gets It Together, but it might not be enough when the rest of his world and support structure is collapsing. The lack of Wallace Wells (and his fantastic lines and mushroom umbrella) was felt by me. Not only did Wallace provide the mental support and backup to the best fighter in the provinces (can you tell I've been obsessively rereading the previous books in anticipation of this one?), but he was somewhat separate from the Sex Bob-omb axis of Stephen, Kim, Neil, Julie (that bitch!), and even Knives.

It's no wonder the boyfriend (and robot) fighting is largely background to the greater drama of character interaction, particularly Kim and Ramona's. Scott will beat the Twins, because c'mon, he's Scott Pilgrim. But what happens after all that? Scott might be coming to terms with his past failures and mistakes, and working to right them and become a better person, but Ramona obviously has not.

I was rereading Gets it Together before the book, and came upon a scene I had forgotten about, but which disturbed me even more this time around. Scott, escaping from Knives Chau's father, runs into subspace and stumbles into Ramona's head, where she is sitting there in semi-BDSM gear at Gideon's feet. She looks so happy and content there at the knee of the books conception of evil, feeling great in her subservience. It reminded me a bit of people submitting to ALE in some of our favorite Morrison books. I'm still trying to puzzle out what I think of this scene, but it is definitely a different Ramona than we or Scott are familiar with, someone who is not in control, who has given over to something else, and something decidedly malign.

O'Malley has never shied from hinting that Ramona might be the girl of Scott's dreams, but she is not a dream girl. She can be just as petty or dishonest as any of the characters, causing a great deal of hurt and pain. This metaphor is of course externalized as the evil exes of her past hunting her down and forcing Scott to deal with her past in a very physical way. If anything, Ramona's faults are pointed out the most by these two exes. The other happened over the course of normal dating and breaking up, but here, Ramona crossed a line. Ramona's exes might not be evil by their own nature, but made evil by Ramona's own selfishness and callousness.

The thing about Scott Pilgrim vs The Universe is that he's at least started the process of growing up and gaining maturity. He already fought and denied his darker half in volume 4, that grinning evil that I could personally relate too. In his darkest moments of this book, it returns, but he can ignore it, not give into it. Now he has to deal with the rest of the crap the universe is throwing at him.

My other favorite character (other than Wallace Wells), Kim Pine, really gets the spotlight in this book. If anything, she's the biggest enigma to me. Still her snarky self, I haven't quite been able to figure out Kim's motivations, her deal. She obviously cares for Scott, but does she still have feelings for him? Or is it merely her being a friend. I'm perfectly willing to write off her kiss with Knives from last volume (and let us never speak of this again), as drunken messing around, but it sort of parallels Ramona's curious interest in Kim.

Kim smiles a lot in this volume, probably more than ever before. It's always when she is hanging out with Scott, such as when he is kicked out by Ramona. At the end of the night and some tasty Thai, she is happy to spend some time with him, and only goes back to her sullen face after he minimizes their time together. Likewise, after he rescues Kim from the twins, reminding me of how they originally got together (I had to fight 96 guys to get to him, and I kicked him so hard he saw the curvature of the Earth!), Kim has a smile on her face. It's only after Scott pushes her away to go after Ramona does she look unhappy.

I liked this book a lot, it showed a great deal of maturation in both art and writing. The characters themselves were great. Stephen Stills has the power to be ultra-laconic, and his simmering crush on Knives leads him to let slip some damaging info. Julie Powers is still an evil bitch. One might think that Knives would finally be getting over Scott, but it looks like none of his other girlfriends can get over him either. Stacey Pilgrim had a fantastic line that made me crack up.

But yeah, the book is darker. It makes sense, this is all leading up to a great finale, where I hope that Scott Pilgrim will beat the snot out of Gideon, and Ramona can conquer her own demons and everyone can be happy together. I just can't wait.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

You know, the thing I just clued into on my second read of VERSUS THE UNIVERSE that the two Unseen Characters are revealed, and Scott mistakes their identities. I'm puzzling out what that means and suggests about the next volume and where the story's at.

This was indeed terrific. I think we're meant to get from Vol. 5 that Kim is the one Scott is truly meant to be with -- she appreciates him in ways that Ramona doesn't, and cares about him enough even to give him counsel on how to improve things with Ramona. Also, Kim is the one who believes in him most, no matter what happens (she's the one who says 'C'mon, he's Scott Pilgrim', no one else) and let's not forget the pine tree (ha!) in his dream who tells him he's not alone. And his apology to her at the bus station is one of the more self-reflective, mature things Scott does in the whole series, and it carries a lot of weight with Kim.

And yeah, Ramona does seem a little too into being lured back to the Gideon days (the twins' crack about her hair leads her to doubt her new style and she immediately cuts back to, presumably, Gideon-length); she also teleports away from Scott simply saying 'we had a good time' or whatever, and she never sends the note to Gideon saying 'it's over.' We can just hear the author's tsk-tsking as Scott says to the twins 'you guys are just trying to bring me down! All I've got to do is defeat you and Gideon and then everything [with Ramona] will be PERFECT!' Plus, Ramona is slightly annoyed at Scott's rehashing 80s/90s X-Men plots and seems to tune him out. She doesn't even like his band, whereas Kim is an enthusiastic member, even if she recognizes the band's faults.

And, the twins kidnap Kim because they sense her significance. "You stand by him... no matter what." HINT HINT.

Oh, and ROBOT X-01 HAS JOINED THE PARTY is awesome. You can just hear the funk music play loud & heavy as it enters, with the narration echoing both '[such and such] has joined the chatroom' *and* the triumphant entrance of an exciting party guest.

I love that Scott tries to feed the sushi to the cat. And the way the cat plops down after Ramona teleports abruptly away.

Also: "Alvin, Simon, Scoooottt" = awesome.

So. much. awesome. in this book.

also, "OH MY GOD GIDEON IS MOBILE" had me laughing out loud and still has the same effect, every time I read it.

and you knew the price had to be paid, the truth had to come out, for the cavalier way Scott cheated on Knives.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Kim Pine is wonderful, and I felt a lot of similar things about this volume, Finder. I'm not sure I think they'll end up together or anything like that, but...

I think the thing that I've walked away with is that this is the volume where everyone walked away. Young Neil's slow decline mirrors the dissipation of Scott's support network, and will Gideon fighting him mean anything at this point? Will that bring Ramona back?

It's just him, man, by the end. Just Scott. Scott and Wallace, of course, because Wallace is the wise old man figure. He's the mentor.

Well, it's broken anyway, innit?

Also, what's up with Stephen Stills? Always drinking, sweating, and just a huge douchebag now. Totally selling out Scott (he didn't "let it slip", accidentally or otherwise, by god he tried to throw the boy under a goddam bus), spending too much time with his roommate's girlfriend...total jerk. What the eff!

KIM PINE volume 3, for example, KIM PINE ALREADY HAS IT TOGETHER.

I still maintain that something funny's going on with Stephen Stills and Joseph, but I can't put a finger on what, exactly.

All things, band and friendship alike, have fallen apart.

O'Malley was hinting at Stills's crush on Knives in volume 4. There was some crosstalk by Julie that sensed that this was the cause of their final breakup. And if anything, love makes you do terrible things, and she was just as broken up with Young Neil as she was from Scott before.

Knives seems to be the real apple of discord in this group.

Was she, though? Vol 4 had them still dating, but fighting and considering the end. I think the actual breakup took place between volumes. making the whole situation pretty shady.

Reading this made me a little bit sad. Not because it's bad, because it's another perfect slice of Pilgrim, but because something's gone from his world. As we approach the end of the story the fantastic becomes more mundane, the romance collides with reality and the possibilities close down.

Ramona's not such a mystery anymore. She's a bad person who toyed with redemption and rejected it. Gideon is revealed as a standard-issue kingpin, or at least what has been revealed was less powerful than just the name. Knives isn't such a wild card. Kim's still got her secrets, but it looks like they're going to be central to the plot. Recording isn't as much fun as playing gigs. The feeling that this story could go anywhere has gone. Everyone's grown up.

I still liked it a lot, I still laughed out loud, and I don't know what else I could have expected. Scott had to grow up; that was the point. I can't help wishing they'd had longer in the sun, though. It's so easy to get serious. It's so hard to get laughs.

Will the extra stuff ever get collected? I have the first Free Comic Book Day story - was there another? I know there have been little Kim Pine stories here and there. Will we ever see Wallace Wells and Mobile in their own series? What would they fight?

Yeah! It IS kind of sad. Everything is broken. Scott & co. realise not everything works as it should, and for the first time O' Malley makes us seriously doubt about Scott & Ramona having a happy ending. But, more than anything else, it made me feel specially sad for Kim; she's always been inside a "tuff act" shell and can't show her true feelings.

ALSO: I want to see what's gonna happen between Stephen Stills and Knives (are they together? They seemed close in that party scene), and with Young Neil, since those plot threads barely got mentioned in 5. OK, Neil's got another girl, but he's still clearly moody and pissed off. And what's up with Ramona's spidey-sense?

ALSO ALSO: Double hurricane kick is the best Kung Faux move ever.

I don't think everything is broken. It's sad, sure, but as far as I could tell, even from issue one, the story of Scott and Ramona was about Scott growing up to the point where he could stop being a child, not about getting the cool American girlfriend. Unless the sixth volume undergoes a massive shift in tone and subtext, Scott's going to wind up with Kim, or try and fail.

What I find quite interesting is the different ways ex-partners play into both Scott and Ramona's lives and how they deal with that.

We have Scott, slacker and (formerly) unemployed layabout. He dates around, fights for Kim in highschool but then that ends, somewhat sadly, and Scott hooks up with Envy Adams that One True Great Heartbreaker who leaves him a romantic trainwreck for over a year. In the meantime Scott and Kim become friends again. Scott hooks up with Knives and then, like a shit, cheats on her then dumps her for Ramona, and that's where we be at.

Ramona, from what we've seen has cheated on or played every boyfriend she's had since Matthew Patel (excepting Todd, is that right?). She's a mover-on-er, as in she's always moving on to the next guy, whereas Scott is portrayed as a guy who kind of falls into relationships for better or worse.

The letter is totally significant. Ramona clearly never posted it and never finished things conclusively with Gideon G. Grant Graves which is what spurred him on to forming the League. Why didn't Ramona post it? Because Gideon's still got his hooks in her. I don't mean that in a pro-active way on his part, but that Flowers just pure hasn't gotten over him.

The glow is these hooks which manifest as some kind of anxiety-activated teleportation.

All this is inspired by Kate Beaton's comic above. We don't see Kim and Lisa out for Scott's blood in a League of Evil Exes. The only one who's been out for revenge is Knives who actually got a raw deal, but then takes it out on Ramona, not Scott. So misplaced anger is a running theme here, which is true to life. Recently a friend's girlfriend broke up with her. On a night out a few weeks later we bumped into her ex's new girlfriend and she was absolutely furious at her for the breakup.

This book is all about treating people right or it'll come back to bite you (or someone you know) in the ass.

movie updates, via the movie blog. Videos and whatnot. Apparently it will be filmed in Toronto, using most of the same locations. Huzzah!

Also, it seems most of the cast has been...um...casted. Behold:

Michael Cera ... Scott Pilgrim

Mary Elizabeth Winstead ... Ramona V. Flowers

Ellen Wong ... Knives Chau

Chris Evans ... Lucas Lee

Anna Kendrick ... Stacey Pilgrim

Brandon Routh ... Todd Ingram

Mae Whitman ... Roxy Richter

Jason Schwartzman ... Gideon Gordon Graves (rumored)

Alison Pill ... Kim Pine (rumored)

Kieran Culkin ... Wallace Wells

Johnny Simmons ... Young Neil

Brie Larson ... Envy Adams

Aubrey Plaza ... Julie Powers

Erik Knudsen ... Luke 'Crash' Wilson
Mark Webber ... Stephen Stills

Nelson Franklin ... Comeau

Abigail Chu ... Trisha 'Trasha' Ha

Jean Yoon ... Mother Chau

Satya Bhabha ... Matthew Patel

Ingrid Haas ... Monique

Emily Kassie ... Winifred Hailey

Pretty happy so far, with the exception of Allison Pill. I've seen her on television here and there, and can't say I like her as Kim Pine. Let's hope that rumor is baseless. But Jason Schwartzman as Gideon? Sweet deal!
