ooh, thanks for letting me know about the song on the site - I hadn't noticed that.

When they say 'nudie suits,' they don't mean spandex, which is what I think of when I hear the phrase 'nudie suit'. What does that mean? Nudie suit means 'silly costume' in Canada? Help?

Has anyone else ruminated on the fact that Wallace seems to know more about the League of Evil Ex's than Scott does? Is he 'in on it' to some degree, do you think?

Nudie suits, as described on a very useful website.

I think Wallace just does his research and is generally well-informed in a way Scott will never bother to be.

Best new incidental characters: Wallace's cocktail-loving friends who he doesn't bother introducing to Scott. If the guy turned out to be Mobile, I would prefer that to having Mobile remain an offscreen character since that's already been done with Scott's brother Lawrence.

I like the fact that Wallace seemed to be more independent of Scott this time (notwithstanding that the two of them are together in so many scenes) and that he's either no longer interested in mentoring Scott or no longer thinks he needs to do so.

I just read a bunch of the threads on the Scott Pilgrim site discussion board, and O'Malley is there commenting on stuff and responding to readers' questions. He said, in a response to someone asking 'when are we going to learn more about Wallace's interesting friends?', that 'those characters may never show up again - they are there to show that Wallace has an interesting & exciting social life entirely outside of Scott's world, and it's one that Wallace doesn't really bring Scott into.'

Did anyone else find it just a little disappointing that the 'gets it together' story is about him moving from living with his friend to living with his girlfriend, and barely managing to retain a job as a dishwasher? I enjoy reading it a lot, but I think last volume had a much stronger story and impact (i.e., he actually does deal with his feelings about Envy, more or less). I kind of wanted his maturation to be more impressive and/or difficult.

I mean, I do get this is a running joke with the 'if your life had a face', etc, but still.

I tend to think that a character like Scott, the only way to go is incremental change, because otherwise it starts to lean into the territory of "deus ex machina." He's not really equipped to have any huge epiphanies and solve his problems; "getting it together" seems more about taking a (first) step rather than solving the problem. Plus there's a whole other book to get through.

I think, for me, the BIG MOMENT was when he was about to run to save his relationship with Ramona but then turned around and ran off to save his job first; his feelings toward Ramona tend to gobble up everything else in his life and I think he's started to realize he has to prioritize some other things before he's going to have any kind of stable relationship with her.

My copy arrived today, so I have finally been able to read the last two or so pages.

In a roundabout way, I'd like to thank This Thread and Those Involved for recommending this series, because it really is very, very joyful. So. Thanks!

re-reading all the volumes (every new volumes inspires me to do this) makes me think: did anyone ever actually make mp3/recorded song versions of the songs from Scott's band? The chord progressions are listed for a few of them (also, the song Scott wrote about his favorite Tex-Mex restuarant), and I bet some enterprising online Scott Pilgrim fan who played guitar & was a singer with some basic recording equipment would make up a melody for those songs and record them, just for fun.

I've had a few goes at doing the song from the first book. I hate to say it, but, um.... (whispers)... I don't think it's actually a very good song.

(Maybe it's supposed to have some amazing melody that I can't guess that would give it a boost into goodness?)

Got my copy of Vol.4 yesterday anyway. Only read the opening beach holiday segment so far (gonna try and pace myself). Needless to say, It's already super-great.

Rich Johnston linked a song in his column this week inspired by Knives Chau. It's decent but didn't grab me the way the Flying Burritos song on O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim site did.

I keep re-reading these. Help! Loved "The Uncanny Comeau" strip at the end, as well as the enigmatic one-pager by the REAL Comeau. The bonus material in each volume makes me drool. Just drool.

Today, bored on the internewt, I looked at Bryan Lee O'Malley's website to see if there was a projected date for v5. And he hasn't even started drawing it yet.

I'm so horribly impatient I hate myself.

Y'know, this is very tangential, but it took me an unforgivably long period of time to realize that Byan Lee O'Malley of Kupek fame is none other than Byan Lee O'Malley of Scott Pilgrim fame. I did a double take. I did a triple take. I got a snack and a glass of water and did a quadruple take. It still boggles the mind.

Really an unforgivably long period of time.

Funny thing about that Michael Cera... whenever I watched Arrested Development in the first season, I thought that he and the redhead kissing cousin would be great as Shinji and Asuka in a live action Neon Genesis Evangelion. No, seriously.

As for this, I'm open to persuasion - he certainly can play a well-meaning idiot. I just don't want Ramona and Kim to be played by ubergeneric American TV babes with toned midriffs, which seems all too probable sadly.

Wright had made an faux-interview with Cera during the release of Superbad (asking stupid questions and finally repeating the dead old "when is a 4th season/film of AD coming out?"). Cera's great but perhaps a bit too likeable ("he's George Michael, how can anyone not like him?")? I thought Scott had a certain tiny urghness floating around him (and also a sense of unfilmable cgi cuteness -- "begone!").

I just read for the first time "Precious Little Life". It's truly wonderful (thank goodness for the lith), I'm forming more thoughts to be put here and hoping to get to read the other volumes to catch up to the thread.

I find it hard to imagine him in the part, but he's far from the worst guy they could have cast. He seems like too much of a straight-up dork, Scott is more like hipster dork, it's a different style of dorkishness.

I agree Jackie - it's more of a hipster dork thing Scott has going on. I would also think he's got to look a *bit* more good-looking/manly unkempt young hipster than Cera...

I feel powerfully compelled to post this, the most substantive Scott Pilgrim movie news yet - this is from Comic Book Resources' coverage of Seattle's comic book convention, the Emerald City Con.

>> Talk of the “Whiteout” film led Rucka to begin questioning O’Malley on the movie that will be based on his “Scott Pilgrim” series. O’Malley said the movie is supposed to start production in September, and he likes the people working on the project. He said he’s read every draft of the script, given notes, and said, “They seem to take me seriously.” Edgar Wright (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”) is directing the film, and Michael Cera (“Superbad,” “Juno”) will play the lead.

Both Rucka and O’Malley then discussed the fact that comic books and movies are different mediums, saying one can’t necessarily transfer one over to the other without changes. Although, when a concerned fan asked O’Malley if the “dance battle” scene from the first book would be in the movie, the writer-artist replied that “most of the first book appears in the film...near verbatim.”

Naw brah, I have used Science to work out that the real-life band that Sex Bob-omb resembles most is Times New Viking. There's three of them, one's a girl, they have a pun-tastic name (font puns are the new awesome) they sound kinda crappy but they're brilliant.

sounds good! O'Malley now lists the projected release date for Vol. 5 as December 2008. He also has a section with annotations from the previous volumes here His main page on his site has links to development/warmup sketches for Vol. 5 and 'the making of the first volume' notes, sketches, layouts and such...

Triplets: The next time you get a nosebleed, I want you to picture me sitting down in front of my computer trying very very hard to kill you with my mind. My temple veins are bulging and my forehead is sweaty. The lights in the room flicker and spark.

I have mixed feelings about Cera as Scott Pilgrim. I've enjoyed Cera in just about everything I've seen him in, but I'm not sure he's up for it for reasons stated by others. But I'm looking forward to the film just the same and he may surprise us. I find myself sort of curious about the wardrobe in this film.

I just don't want Ramona and Kim to be played by ubergeneric American TV babes with toned midriffs, which seems all too probable sadly.

I'll never understand this negative association with toned mid-riffs. At any rate, I'm sure we'll all be happy with the actresses playing the two, regardless of their shape, so long as they do a decent job of it.

I don't really have an issue with Cera at all. The only complaint I've heard that really made any sense was "too young", but since he's a 23 y/o dating a 17 y/o and making that seem slightly dorky instead of sligthly creepy, I think the fact that he's 19 makes that seems more likeable.

Winstead, on the other hand, doesn't look as... unattainable as I'd imagined.
