Dude kicks ass. I want him on the Red Sox.

I would cry. Besides, Utley is a Philly boy through and through. He did a fine job tonight, too.

Can you explain to me the infield fly rule?

Jake, Colossus of Clout
02:45 / 08.05.06
I heart Utley. I have Jimmy Rollins on my team, too. Quite the double-play combo there.

I'm happy to explain the infield fly:

If a ball is popped up over the infield, the umpire can invoke said rule to cause the batter to be out automatically and the play ruled dead. It exists so that infielders can't purposefully let the ball drop and quickly scoop it up and initiate a double-play.

Now why couldn't I have gotten that kind of straight answer every other time I've asked someone that question? Thanks! It came into effect once this evening, incidentally, regarding your boy Utley (if I'm not mistaken).

Yeah, just saw about McLennan in the paper... sad indeed.

This site is the official rulebook. Being pretty OC/anal about baseball, my buddies and I will break it out during arguments about the silliest things. It's kind of a fun resource.

Oh, wow. I can see how this would certainly come in handy.

*yawn*

Okay, it's the Sunday before finals week, and I am already up too late. I've heard sleep actually makes these things easier, so I am going to test those theories.

Jake, Colossus of Clout
03:09 / 08.05.06
I always kind of wanted to be an umpire, as my actual on-field talent topped out at the Little League level, but I always thought it might ruin the game for me a little. Plus, you get verbally abused several times a day.

semioticrobotic

I was just reading the umpire's duties in that there handbook. You'd earn your paycheck, for sure.

'Night, all.

Goodnight, Bryan- good luck.

Bed Head
00:10 / 11.05.06
So, anyone? Anyone? I’m slowly drying after a bath and either I type Stuff on here or I’ll wander off and get myself all covered in ink again. Help me, barbelith! I want to be stay cleeeeeaan.

semioticrobotic
00:14 / 11.05.06
Okay. I'll bite. Why all the ink?

iamus
00:14 / 11.05.06
Impossible.

You filthy, filthy boy.

Bed Head
00:19 / 11.05.06
Do I need a reason? Oh Bryan, I just push ink around for fun, and kicks 'n giggles and stuff. It's how I like to spend my evenings. I am, indeed, filthy.

But not tonight, kids! Well, not right now, anyway.

How are you doing? You two lovely, lovely lithers. Jolly nice to see you.

iamus
00:22 / 11.05.06
Not too shabby. Was actually thinking I hadn't seen you shifting in a while.

Nice to see you too, Bryan. Those peaches are working out great, ta.

00:27 / 11.05.06
Ah. Well. We've all got our ... 'thing.'

I'm not too shabby, friends. I'm in the midst of moving, and my dormitory cell, er, studio flat is looking rather dreary and bare in all its stark cement-walled glory.

Glad to hear you're feasting on peaches, iamus. My videogames are sadly packed away for the moment.

Bed Head

Yeah, I have rather missed shifting. Dunno how that happened - I’m now wracking my brains trying to think of all the really amazingly fascinating stuff I’ve been doing instead of shifting, but coming up blank, dammit.

Oh, uh, I’ve managed to watch five series’ worth of 24 in, like, a fortnight. I am saturated with it. And I don’t even like the damn thing, I think I’m just trying to push though to the end so that it’ll be over.

I know that feeling. I'm considering blitzing the Eccleston Whos though, that shouldn't take very long.

Hurrrm. Trying to figure out what to do.... whether or not it's too late to make tea, or drink booze.

Decisions, decisions.

Bed Head
00:42 / 11.05.06
Booze! Although you could always have a whisky tea. Or a liqueur coffee, maybe. Or both.

semioticrobotic
00:45 / 11.05.06
I decided minutes ago that I would plow through "The Office" in its entirety (the Bristish version, not the sub-par American version) before the end of the week. Funniest. Show. Ever.

It's pouring where I am, so if I had the same decisions, I'd opt for the tea.

iamus
00:47 / 11.05.06
Thinking Bed Head has it right. I might go for both.

Alright. Back in a mo.

Jake, Colossus of Clout
00:54 / 11.05.06
Booze!

Hello, all!

Bed Head
00:54 / 11.05.06
Oh God, I wish I’d sensibly decided on Eccleston Who or The Office for my plowing-thru thing. Instead I’m stuck on the frenzied right-wing show. This series, with added kneecap-shootings.

I tell you what though - That Keifer has about the ugliest mouth I’ve ever seen on anyone, on telly or not. On a sliding scale of star mouths, his is even uglier than Sylvester Stallone’s. It looks like he’s sat too close to the fire and melted a little bit. I can't take my eyes off it.

Kinda like the mouth on that damned clown at the top of this thread. Can't stand to look. Can't stop looking.

semioticrobotic
00:57 / 11.05.06
Ho, Jake! Is it raining for you, too?

Shrug
00:59 / 11.05.06
Is that clown from an earlier Fritz Lang film?
Hey all.

Jake, Colossus of Clout
01:00 / 11.05.06
Bryan- Yeah, it's nasty out. Was at the bar watching the Sox but they suck tonight, so I left early. Might as well drink my shitty fridge beer rather than watch the fucking Yankees beat up on my boys for $4 a pint.

Bed Head- Are you watching 24? It's so gross, yet so entertaining.

semioticrobotic
01:01 / 11.05.06
No. Actually, Shrug, that clown is from every bad dream I've ever had.

iamus
01:01 / 11.05.06
Mmmmmmm!

Whiskeybeertea! I'm going to be pissing for hours!

Keifer does indeed have a bit of a wonky mouth. It's like the rougish good-looks of his youth have been subtly skewiffed and upset the whole balance.

It's similar to when my boss got his teeth bleached.

iamus
01:05 / 11.05.06
Of course, he's been neither rougish or youthful in the time I've known him. Or particular handsome.

But he got his teeth bleached and it looked odd.

So there you go.

semioticrobotic
01:07 / 11.05.06
Jake- If that's the case, I should call my Mainer friends and make sure everyone is okay, no one is threatening to leap from high places, etc., etc. And I had students in my public speaking class this semester give very persuasive speeches about why the Sox were 1) as good as last season and 2) going to win the world series. Too bad I already handed in final grades this afternoon.

Jake, Colossus of Clout
01:12 / 11.05.06
Oh, they're good. It's just one game, and we beat the Yanks in a massacre last night, 14-3 against the Yankee ace, Randy "Super Mullet" Johnson.

As a realistic baseball fan of 20+ years, however, neither of these teams can win it all without a serious late-september streak. The White Sox are still the class of the AL, and in the NL, New York and St. Louis are looking pretty good. The Red Sox don't have consistent hitting and the Yankees have a mediocre starting lineup and a pretty sorry bullpen. /baseballgeekout

So, how's things in Orono?

iamus
01:14 / 11.05.06
You told me you lived in Trantor, Bryan!

Just goes to show.... You think you know someone.....

semioticrobotic
01:14 / 11.05.06
iamus- I'd like to look more rougish and/or youthful. So I just dump this stuff next to the washing machine in my mouth?

Jake- Things here, apart from being wet, are nice right now. I've finished all my obligations as student and all my obligations as instructor. This is a Good Thing. I am spending the summer in Pennsylvania, so right now I'm in a transitional period -- half my things are in the dorm and half the thing's are at a friend's. I get booted to the curb Saturday.

iamus- I do live in Trantor. I spend any remaining time in Maine.
