I see that our emic realities are not in agreement over anything neither is anyone interested in leaving their rigid reality tunnels to understand what the point really is.

Oh good grief. You know, I think I actually got the warm fuzzies for Megsie for a moment there.

I think the contrast on Barbelith must need adjusting.

Well over one hundred posts of no-one agreeing with you.

I was just starting to think "Oh well that's that then. There's no way SR can come back to this thread now with anything other than a total acceptance of hir mistake and a request to change the name."

I really was.

Unless he's too trapped in his rigid reality tunnel to consider another point of view himself!

Open your mind, sheeple!

At least open your emic realities.

Ah, he's read Quantum Psychology recently and is using RAWspeak at every oppo he gets. He must be, what, seventeen? Bless 'im.

Sadly, he hasn't got the point that one of the main, ah, points of that book is that when people disagree, it isn't helpful when they tell each other that they just don't know what the point is.

In fact, 'is' gets pretty roughly treated in that book full-stop, really.

ONE of the threads on Conversation must DIE. Will it be THIS one.

See now Emic would have been a much better user name. But Real Live Tiger might be the best user name of all.

I appreciate that all the dog-piling might've been a little overwhelming for SR, and that the easiest reaction is to get all defensive and hostile, but bloody hell that was one childish post. I think Haus summed it up perfectly with his "I'm right you're wrong" summary.

SR, if you ever read this, please please please try and take some time to think about the issues here. The reaction to your screen name isn't simply reducible to super-sensitivity or spite or a board wide urge to dog-pile.

Is anyone else deeeeeeply weary of the term dog-pile?

Maybe we should have dogpiled him more sensitively, an' that...

Alternatives to dog-pile?
All I can think of is Barbekicking which is even more unhelpful.

Spaniel

Is dog-pile a useful term? I dunno. It does suggest a thoughtless let git 'im mentality and in doing so risks belittling peoples' contributions. Buuuut then I'm not entirely sure that mob mentality doesn't ever rear it's head in cyberspace and, more specifically, on Barbelith.

I get a bit pissed off at attempts to dismiss a mass negative response as "mob mentality" ie. the possibility that a group of posters could independently decide they feel strongly enough to respond does not compute. Nooo, it's all about teh sheeple.

Nothing much to add but to echo "good grief" and with regards to:

to understand what the point really is.

Which is?

I get to vent, that's what. Sure, lock the abomination; there'll be other opportunities to call this fool on his bullshit.

I know what you mean about the occasional bandwagon that rolls into Barbetown, Boboss, but in this case I felt it was a necessary signal to send. Normally a couple of posters would say X, Y, Z and we'd all think Well said, that's what I think, so we wouldn't post. This time it felt purposeful to add my name to the roll call.

As far as giving an effective response to SR, the overwhelming number he sought for guidance was too overwhelming for his pompous adolescent ego. It didn't really matter what any of us said. He couldn't hear it because he wasn't listening. Too busy frothing at the mouth.

Maybe this experience will bubble away on his back burner until some grown up thinking begins to percolate, wayyyy down the line.

Hey, I fully appreciate that people were responding to a specific request by SR, and that there is strong feeling on this subject.

For the record I don't think mob mentality is a big problem around these parts. I just wanted to point out that I don't think Barbelith is immune to it.

No, but if you'd any awareness of the people you are conversing to, and I think this is part of the problem - the utter solipsism evident; you could see the list of pollees is pretty disparate. There's plenty people here I've had vehement disagreements with on a variety of things, but this is not one.

If it hasn't been locked yet, I'd just like to say that I'm sorry I didn't read this thread earlier to comment, and I'm glad the barbelith immune system kicked into high gear on this one.
