My favourite rap record this year was Young Jeezy's The Recession. He's nobody's idea of a great lyricist, and if you don't want to hear about how he really really really did sell crack, this ain't for you, but he skates by on CHARISMA, and the beats are phenomenal. Circulate is the best song ever written about an economic crisis.
If you want something more lyrical, the Guilty Simpson album Ode To The Ghetto has some great stuff - mean muggin' street stuff, a couple strong club bangers, also some tremendously skippable stabs at for-the-ladies love songs.
More leftfield is Lil Wayne's Carter III, which has some of the year's highest highlights but is really bogged down (for me) in Wayne playing to his 'I am a weirdo on lots of drugs' persona - which is not necessarily "a persona", but still grates. I have a playlist of maybe half the songs from this which is great, but I never want to hear the whole thing again, although I think it is the token rap album in a lot of end of year lists. |
