Anyone know where I could get a copy of New Power Generation's album "Exodus" on cd? I had a tape of it back in the day and would quite like to hear it again. It's nowhere to be found here in the UK, and Amazon only appear to have it in filthy primitive vinyl. iTunes hasn't heard of it.

It's an obscure weird poppy little thing that I may well be remembering with undue nostalgia.

In the introduction to a 130-year old edition of the Walter Scott novel "The Black Dwarf", the fictional 'author' Jebediah Clieshbotham mentions the basis of the Black Dwarf myth - a misanthropic, deformed character who lives on the hillside, who is known as "Crooked David" or, or ... "Bow'd Davie".

Is this where David Bowie got his name from?

Wikipedia suggests not

The aspiring rock star needed to use a different stage name to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees, so he chose the last name Bowie after the Alamo hero Jim Bowie and his famous Bowie knife

There is a copy here

In general www.gemm.com is - apart from arguably ebay - the best place to buy physical (as opposed to download) music – especially lovely beautiful vinyl.

Do we have a thread on Anthony and the Johnsons? I want to start talking quite urgently about Hercules and Love Affair. Or shall we have a new thread?

I´m thinking about buying the new Of Montreal record, Skeletal Lamping.

Question for those familiar with this album: If someone liked Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? , what are the chances ze would like the new album, too?

Hello, I'm not sure if there is another thread for this but I couldn't seem to find one.

I'm looking for reccomendations for music. I've found my music buying is getting into a bit of a rut at the moment and looking for something new. Particularly anything interesting in rock/metal (particularly the proggyer side) or in Hip Hop which is a style of music I've always liked but know nothing about.

Ta.

It's hard to know what to suggest... but I'll throw some stuff out there.

Are you down with metal? If so, you should check out meshuggah, if you don't already have some. I also like Desalvo and Grant Me Revenge, both of whom are local to me.
I can recommend Rustie, on Stuff Records - bleep-hop from up this way as well. If you haven't already heard Flying Lotus, you should grab some of his shit too.

Not quite hip hop, but in the same family... There are a few guys doing exciting stuff with dub, like Basic Channel(the label and the guys). Some call them the real origins of dubstep, and there's definitely some stuff sounds a bit like Burial. There's way more to them than that, though.

I could give you more, but I'll wait to see what you think of all that before I do.

If you are not averse to francophone music, I highly reccomend a group called Karkwa and listen to the clips in their discography section (Website available in English & French)

And although their last album came out in 2006, there's a group called Brand New, who are pretty decent...

My favourite rap record this year was Young Jeezy's The Recession. He's nobody's idea of a great lyricist, and if you don't want to hear about how he really really really did sell crack, this ain't for you, but he skates by on CHARISMA, and the beats are phenomenal. Circulate is the best song ever written about an economic crisis.

If you want something more lyrical, the Guilty Simpson album Ode To The Ghetto has some great stuff - mean muggin' street stuff, a couple strong club bangers, also some tremendously skippable stabs at for-the-ladies love songs.

More leftfield is Lil Wayne's Carter III, which has some of the year's highest highlights but is really bogged down (for me) in Wayne playing to his 'I am a weirdo on lots of drugs' persona - which is not necessarily "a persona", but still grates. I have a playlist of maybe half the songs from this which is great, but I never want to hear the whole thing again, although I think it is the token rap album in a lot of end of year lists.

D'y'know, that reminds me. Lollipop is still a great song. You should get it.
