Well, if we have people being pillocks, how can we not moderate the person rather than the thread? And we can't do it with any kind of finesse because the board can't be altered (fantasy mod hat: the ability to lock people out of threads or entire fora for a period of time).

Perhaps it might clear the air if DEDI (who was PMed the link to this bit of discussion) would care to step in and offer some justification of his actions?

Talking of this kind of thing, I had a email today from Wolfangel/Undulating Spine/Unchained Melody complaining he couldn't access his accout. He was assuming he'd been banned. I told him this was extremely unlikely - can you confirm this one way or t'other Tom?

Oh, he's not writing to me anymore. And PMs can always be deleted unread.

God, I probably need to have put in a feature to block PMs from certain people. Dammit.

Symptom, not cause. My concern is with people whose only interest in Barbelith is in generating heat and noise to the general detriment of the quality of the board. DEDI has no interest in reading threads, and will clearly react abusively to any suggestion that he might try. I have consistently been opposed to moderating on the grounds of rank stupidity, but in light of our recent influx and the .. um.. teething troubles, there is a bit of a danger that the people who would actually contribute value to the board spend their online lives having the same four or five conversations with people who don't.

He sort of engaged with me in the PC thread. Then when more veteren posters stepped in, he crossed his arms, leaned back and smugly said, "Point proven". We'll see if he continues to engage....

SIDENOTE:

Is it
"Point proven". We'll see....
Or "Point proven." We'll see....

I understand that the former is correct in America, whereas the latter is correct across the pond. (Or maybe all those fiction editors are just in a great big conspiracy to fuck with my head.)

Haus: I just saw this
(I note that in the Temple, Bruno has just accused Mordant C. of being a bad moderator for responding with anger... round we go again).

The problem I had with Mordant's post was that it was accusing me of being an elitist who views everyone else as sheeple. I considered it baseless. Mordant later said the post was written in a state of anger. I didn't like being accused of this by Mordant in particular, because s/he is a moderator and a well-respected poster whose word holds weight for many people. That is why I said it is irresponsible for a moderator.

In the future if my name is brought up in Policy & Help can someone please PM me and let me know, thanks.

sorry if this seems unecessarily harsh, but if it isnt your responsibility, then whose?

That is why I said it is irresponsible for a moderator.

Moderators are not, as far as I am aware, required to act any differently than any other poster in general thread-related situations. They are as free to post angrily as the rest of us.

If a moderator had deleted a post of yours in anger rather than due to policy requirements then you might have an arguement.

Probably not, to be honest. We'll beep you if something important happens, though.

I have a random question that likely does not need its own thread. When i click on someone elses name I get stats about them, number of posts, etc, is there a way to see that for myself? When I click on my own name it goes to the management page.

Bruno, I don't think I behaved innappropriately. Yeah, I made a slightly irritable post, then went on to clarify what it was that made me angry in the first place. really don't believe I was out of line.

I do think that as a very active Temple poster (with or without the tiny shred of shared power represented by the Mod Hat) I've got a responsibility to conduct myself in a certain way. I want the board to be a classy joint in general and I'm heavily invested in the Temple in particular, which means I need to watch my own contributions and try to keep a certain standard. However, I don't think that demonstrating an emotional response--getting all gushy and exited over a good post or getting shirty over a bad idea--is necessarily going to lower that standard.

I've just switched to a PC from a Mac, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to post images. I used to click and hold down until my little menu came up, selected "open in new window," and just copied and pasted the url in the new window to where I needed it. No such luck with this PC, apparently. It has a cruelly similar interface, with the right-clicking for a window and the tantalizing option "open link in new window," which is always greyed out. OMGWTF!!!1!1!111!!!

Please help. How do I do it? It's driving me batty.

When you post you put

< img src="http://www.whatever the URL of the image file is" >

in the message window (without the spaces of course). That´s it, the picture then should show up, when you´ve clicked preview or post reply.

mozilla has slightly better functionality than explorer for those things.
you can 'copy image location' from a right click, or even 'view image' and copy the address line.
copying the location is the easier of the two.

Jack Fear

Or, in Explorer, right-click the image and select "Properties," then copy 'n' paste the "Location" field in the Properties pop-up.

I was posting a link to a video on You Tube and wondered whether it was possible to have embedded video stuff in threads rather than links by using their html code- at present i don't think it works (or didn't earlier in the preview i tried)?

Can anyone help or is this a huge re-jig of the barbelith software?

If it is possible to embed video in Barbelith pages, I'd like it to stop being possible as quickly as possible. Animated GIFs are bad enough...

Bah humbug.
I'm still angry that this place isn't written on proper paper.
Too much movement can be bad for a man's eyes.

Um. If the embedding doesn't work on a preview, I doubt it would work at all. Suggested neophobia aside, this probably is a good thing, what with quite a few people using dial-up, and with bandwidth costs being pretty high as-is.

It'd also be annoying to have all those threads with [Vids] put in the title. What if they have videos and pictures!? God. It'd just be the start of something nasty...

"Why Jesus shouldn't win Big Brother [pics] [vids] [webcam] [adverts] [crap porn] [spam]"

Soon enough, we'd be like the rest of the internet.

New Question

I was thinking of starting a thread for quotes from sources other than Barbelith - other message boards, email lists etc. Occassionally a little gem will pop up and I'll think "That deserves a wider audience."

This feels like a stupid question but would there be any legal or copyright issues with that? Would it be a breach of netiquitte, even?

Spatula Clarke
15:31 / 26.05.06
Possibly a breach of netiquette if they're not properly attributed. Link to the quote in its original context and name the original poster, and you should be fine.

What about bittorrents? I've been downloading heaps of really interesting programmes lately and I thought about making a thread with good bittorrent links in. Can I do that or is it Bad and Wrong?

Jack Denfeld
10:23 / 27.05.06
Bittorrent links are probably a bit much. If you casually mention that you bittorrented something specific someone could always pm you, but I don't know if it's a good idea for bittorrent links that have copyrighted stuff.
