I've been thinking about the 'ignore' function following the discussion in the "Burning Down The Haus" thread, and I have a question: if a mod puts a fellow member on 'ignore', does that mean they can't see or approve that member's moderation requests?

Second question: when a thread is moved from between foras, do the moderation requests get wiped and / or passed onto the moderators of the thread's new fora?

pw : You can still read PMs from someone you have on ignore, so I would imagine you could read a mod request also. And, the mod privileges (sp) come with the forum and not the thread -for example, now the 'Extinct Clothing' thread has moved from AF&D to Conversation, I don't have the edit thread / edit posts options.

Is there any kind of thread in FT&T that is used for 'has anyone seen' type questions? I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this, for example. It clearly doesn't warrant a thread of its own - or if it does, one could spin off afterward.

Similarly, sometimes, I'll watch/attend something and I think 'probably not worth a thread on it's own but people might be interested in it because x/y/z'. When a film is just out, for example, or a play (which is going to be a regional matter) is on.

I can't find a thread that I wouldn't be rotting by just sticking something in, but then it is a difficult thing to search for. Any suggestions on a suitable thread for this kind of thing? If not, do people thing it would be okay to start a 'Have you seen...?' thread or do you feel it would be too general and of little value to anyone?

I don’t think there is one, Tabitha. And it sounds like a good idea to me.
I’ve been in that situation where I’ve seen something a bit obscure, but didn’t want to start a thread if there was going to be no one else to talk about it with. So a ‘Have you seen...?’ thread might be useful for gauging the appetite for a particular topic, and also act as a recommendation. Nice.

there was a similar thread in the music that was a bit of a lightning rod for conversation.
it was the "what are you listening to now" thread and i seem to recall it's death was a bit of a rebirth for the forum.

you might want to watch the new thread doesnt turn into a similar energy sink for folks enthusiasm about new stuff.

Thanks Shrug - that looks like just the ticket! I have two questions I'm going to post there today.

What you're saying toksik is exactly what I was thinking about - threads without a direct purpose can sometimes end up a bit rubbish. As a 'general' thread already exists I'll give that a go.

SW - maybe if a few of us post similar kinds of queries/reviews/comments in the general thread and it attracts interest, we could think about adding something into the description which makes it clear that people are welcome to ask for info on things as well as posting their own reviews or comments.

To FT&T - away.

Hey, if I want to create a page in the Wiki, do I just sign up for an account? It's for my BarbeWriteCamp idea.

I know the wiki has some good advice on etiquette and ethical standards (etc) on Barbelith, but I was thinking...

Would it be a good idea to try and write a kind of Barbelith "Universal Declaration of Human Rights"? i.e. start a thread called "Universal Declaration of Member Rights" and go from there?

I also know this would be difficult, if not impossible; but we could use the UN version as template, and I feel that even the exercise of compiling this might help us to understand and respect each other more (and therefore each other's issues / perspectives). We even could get members, new and old, to sign up to it, which might help in future cases of potentially banable behaviour / members, etc.

Also, between us we seem to encompass all the disciplines needed to write this, and it could be written to be a sibling document to Tom's "Tripolitica".

So..... Good / bad idea? Been done before and I'm being web-blind, again?

That could be a great thread even if it's just a Head Shop or Switchboard project...

Cool. I'll type up an opening post later today and see what others think before I post it: I'm concerned that we'd have to start as we mean to go on; so my sculpting of my opening post might take a fair while as I don't want us to start off on the wrong foot. Therefore, if anyone else wants to do it (maybe someone with more professional experience of defending and/or representing human rights in RL?), please do.

grant, I'm not sure what fora the thread should go. I figured Conversation as I assume it's the most read fora, and this might make the process easier. However, Policy, or as you typed, Headshop or Switchboard might be better.

What do y'all think?

What is BarbePolicy on posting pictures?

I posted a photograph of a teddy bear with an erection over Here, and it was swiftly replaced by a link to said picture.

I thought the picture was pretty inoffensive - I can understand linking to pics of harcore porn etc, but a teddy with a fluffy boner seems pretty.. well...

I just suppose I'm asking why the pic ended up linked, so that I can avoid any future problems with pics that are unsuitable for the board.

Thanks.

P.S. Can I edit a post once it has been edited by a mod? If the picture has to be linked, I'd quite like to title the link myself...

Yes, you can - you just have to select "edit post" as usual. As long as you just change the text inside the anchor tags, you should be fine.

I moved to change the image, as a better-safe-than-sorry NSFW issue. Another moderator presumably agreed. If you want you could move to reverse the moderation, and that may also be agreed. I'd call it marginal, but I browse without images, so.

What does SBR mean, like in front of a few current Convo topics? I tried looking in the wiki, but it gave me errors.

SBR stands for Sex, Body and Relationship, Matt. Its introduction as a recognizable acronym on The Barb was a result of the proposition for a forum of the same name. (The original thread is be rumbling around in policy somewhere should you care to look).

Fair enough. I forgot that people surf here from work, and I suppose it was a pretty borderline image.

I've got one of those invisible mod jobs in my queue. I can't remember how we get rid of them. Can someone remind me?

Well. Using the patented E Randy Method, as described here, I think I’ve just gone and disagreed our invisible mod request, and that should have made it go away. Or it might have just gone on its own.

But, anyway. I just pushed a button or two. And, at the same time, coincidentally or otherwise, that thing vanished. Rejoice! etc

Earlier this evening I posted using my partner's suit accidentally. Our browser randomally determines wether I, she, or no-one at all is signed in.
I assume it's impossible to have the post changed to my name. Would the best way to repost it under my name and get her to ask for a delete?

23:49 / 06.09.06
If it's practical, FaF, (ie. if there haven't been lots of subsequent posts and the repost would be out of place) I think that would be the best way.
Alternatively you could make an edit to the post with a note to say 'that was from me not her', if you see what I mean.

Sorry for not skimming through the entire thread to see if this has been asked already, but - well, that's the problem. It could just be me missing something due to being a newbie, but I've had a quick look through here and the Wiki and can't find that this has been done. What about a thread in which people can ask if subjects have been covered already, so that people can either point them to the appropriate thread or discuss whether or not it's worth starting a new thread? Keyword search functions only get you so far, and a full indexing system would be a nightmare to implement. For instance, I've got a couple of topics concerning religion in mind, but they're not particularly keyword-led and I really can't read through all the threads for the last six months to see if they've been covered. Apart from anything else, I have visual problems and catching up on threads is a daunting task for me.

When you write PMs do you format them in the same way as when posting? I mean using html tags (maybe, I'm not really sure what the things you have to do to make your posts nice and pretty are, but I think it's html).

Some discussion here about what the default mod response should be to edits where no change is apparent. If you can't see a difference between the original post and the proposed one, should you agree or disagree?

ONLY NICE THINGS
17:58 / 15.10.06
Skip, surely? Or contact the poster and ask for clarification, maybe. It's possible they have made a mistake, in which case they would probably want it disagreed ASAP, so they can resubmit with the correction.

The closest comparison I can draw offhand is with HTML fixes - people quite often submit corrected versions of their HTML which are still wrong, which I tend to disagree and then resubmit with the HTML corrected - the thinking being that the intention in the mod request is clearly to get the HTML working. That's a pretty binary situation, though.

Skip, surely? Or contact the poster and ask for clarification, maybe.

Seems eminently reasonable to me. I think it's more important to find a reason to Disagree, given that this takes the job away from the other mods as well.

Given an enormous post which apparently has a single typo in it somewhere, after a quick skim to make sure the content is the same I'd be much happier agreeing it than spending half an hour proofreading it.

I did start by saying Even if it is a typo, could you please give some idea of where the typo is. The last time it happened was Cameron, a few weeks ago. I did PM him after turning it down and he resubmitted and it was fine.

I'm not claiming infallibility but I am a little bit irritated that it's being assumed that it would be me misreading and not seeing the errors and not the person editing the post making a mistake.

Smoothly
09:27 / 16.10.06
I’m not assuming that it would always be a misreading on the mod’s part, just accepting that this is a possibility and trying to establish whether it’s an appropriate policy to disagree a request in those circumstances.
