quoting straight from thread two, which in itself quotes thread one:
The old Q & A thread has become large and unwieldy - here's a lovely, fresh, manageable version for new questions. Please continue to use the old thread for posting replies to questions/issues that were raised there. Rules as before:

Use this thread to ask any old question you fancy an answer to, but can't be bothered to research in the proper manner like any normal, self-motivated, self-respecting person with a bit of get-up-and-go would. Questions that aren't worth starting an individual thread for. Anything from "what the hell is psychogeography?" to "how do I fix my leaky toilet?" Alternatively, use this thread to show off your mighty knowledge by answering a question or 2 or 3.

Note: People asking rhetorical questions for tiny comic effect (eg "What's it all about, then?" or "Why?") will be punished to the full extent of the law and beyond.

i'll start with a nice easy one, one that most of you can probably answer, but that i cant.

what size are CDs?
i recently bought some CD sticker paper for printing labels, and i have no idea what size to make my photoshop creations for them to fit.
i use fireworks for image manipulation, and already have much of the artwork. i'm also working on artwork for the cover, but this time i am intending to build that from scratch.(i'm gonna use inserts from a CD case,so i dont need to worry about sizing them for this one)

anyone know about CD labels?
anyone built a CD case before?
any pointers on either?

I have a feeling that CD case size is known a jewel or jewelcase size... not sure if that is any help at all though...

i'm alright on the boxes, thanks.
well, at least for this one.
the thing i need, i reckon, is atemplate, maybe a PNG file i can use in fireworks, or an exact set of pixel coordinates.
a PDF might also be handy.

in most CD burning circumstances i use a marker pen and a paper case, made origami style.
this one's a present, so i'm getting hung up on perfection.

Okay, I have this dog, see, an Austrailian Blue Heeler. Inside the house she's active, responsive and generally fun. Outside, when I take her to walk and 'do her business' (pooping, for those of you unnacustomed to euphanisms) she growls at cars and cyclists and jumps up to bite pedestrians. It's really embarrasing walking her on a busy street, and I'm worried about her biting kids (or at least somebody who could sue me). So what do I do? Are there any surefire ways of teaching my dog to be comfortable around people and vehicles, short of obedience school, or will she grow out of it in time?

Phex - If you can get hold of it, have a read of Jan Fennell's The Dog Listener, its all you'll ever need to improve you're understanding and relationships with dogs. Am in a bit of a rush right now, but will post again later on basics....

Obedience school might not be necessary. But the best way to stop a dog from doing something that could endanger it, and others, is to make it very clear that you (as it's Alpha) are extremely unhappy about it's behaviour.

Have you trained it to understand what "No!" means? If so, when it starts jumping and barking give it a firm tug on it's lead and tell it NO! in an angry (almost barking) voice. I'd suggest a rap on the nose if he persists, but that depends on your temperment as well.

When children approach make him lay down until they have passed. If you're really worried about him biting someone then you should think about obidience lessons, or invest in a muzzle (which he won't like, but will probably like more than being put down).

Remember, when he responds well to training make a massive fuss of him. Then he's more likely to associate behaving with pleasurable responses from you.

I truly hope this was sarcasm. If not... Phex, consider the above a primer on what NOT to do with your dog.

You've stumbled into my area of obsession (dog training), so I'll try to be brief. How old is this dog? If an adolescent or adult, your problem likely has to do with not properly socialized as a puppy. Up until the age of 16 wks, puppies should be indundated with messages that strangers, children, bicycles, etc are all WONDERFUL things and not scary. If that wasn't done, you face a larger challenge.

It sounds, from your quick description, that your dog thinks it's your leader and it's feeling stressed out about having to protect you from all these people and vehicles on the street. The order of the day is to show the dog that you're the boss and she can sit back and relax as your subordinate. The Dog Listener is good, I also recommend you Google "NILIF" and follow it to the letter.

And I just want to quickly add that obedience school shouldn't be seen as a last resort. It's actually a fun thing to do with your dog that goes a long way in helping him/her be a well-behaved pet. I love obedience school, I'm about to sign up for my third in a row despite the fact that my dog is behaving well already.

Each to their own Ibis, my Dad was a police dog handler for thirty years and his dogs never bit anyone (unless told to of course) and were extremely well-behaved loveable doggies. I'm going on the nuggets of advice he gave me about dog training and psychology.

is there an easy way to make all the songs on a mix CD the same volume?

Dude, sticky labels on CDs may sound romantic now, but when they peel off and fuck her CD player she won't thank you for it. lightscribe, specialised printer app or china marker.

As for levels... are you using iTunes? If so, you can do it individually or collectively - for the latter, go to Preferences-Playback-Sound check.

If two people were evenly-matched in terms of height, weight and brawling skills, but one was sober and one was under the influence of

- alcohol or
- cocaine or
- ecstasy

then which of them would have the advantage?

I've always assumed that the sober person would have the upper hand in terms of speed, balance, presence of mind, accurate estimation of distance and so on, but I wonder if these drugs could give someone the edge by making them more uninhibited in their aggression (attacking first and attacking harder) or a useful unpredictability. I include ecstasy because, unlikely as it may sound, I've seen people on love-pills becoming violent.

1. Does changing levels on a song in iTunes translate to the burning process? I know I've made CDs with iTunes and some songs came out very soft even though they were being boosted by 100% and sounded fine when played as files on iTunes. That was a few versions ago, so maybe it's changed.

2. I thought there were dimensions for disc labels in that article -- I know the printers care about inner and outer diameters (I want to say 1.5 in and 4.25 in, but that's a guess.) Like Haus, I trust markers more than labels, although I've seen some clear plastic ones that seem a lot better than the paper kind.

3. I doubt alcohol will give anyone an advantage in a fight over the long term. It'll help people start fights, and they might feel less pain/be willing to do uglier things, but the coordination loss seems like too much of a trade-off.

I don't know enough about cocaine to judge.

MDMA, though... hmm. I know amphetamines were originally designed for soldiers (alert on watch!) and that's what the MA stands for. More energy, a touch of time dilation, better sense of body limits -- why not? Just hope the other guy doesn't offer you a backrub first.

i recently read an article wherein someone keeps using the term 'spin'in relation to drugs.
is 'spin' another word for 'trip'?
or was he just a terrible writer?

pointless & uncalled for
19:06 / 10.11.05
"spun" is a term for being strung out or having been under the influence for protracted periods of time. Depending on context spin is likely to imply a more recreational trip.

Char Aina
19:11 / 10.11.05
so if someone is reffering to a trip as "not as big a spin as acid" they mean it isnt as uncontrollable a ride?

How do you train a cat?

simply swing it by the tail round and round and round and round until it is really really dizzy, then repeat this six times, finally setting it down on the floor - and remember, no room is too small - then place it in a cloth bag and leave alone for two days, before dousing the animal in a mixture of flour and chilli, returning it to the bag which you then carefully place overnight in the fridge. set the oven to low and...

oh dear, did you ask to 'train' a cat? o, that is not at all possible.

and on training a blue heeler - they are innately liable to nip at sheep's - or anything else's they want to move to where they desire - heels. 's what they do. and i am not at all sure it is a good is idea to ever - EVA - hit a dog in the face. dogs should not shy away from hands towrad their face. this is a bad behaviour, apprently. picking it up by the scruff of its neck, like a mother would her puppy, while commanding 'NO' in a firm voice should be sufficient. the earlier in its life this happens the better.

(from my own experience with dogs and obediance classes, from which i have had two very lovely and quite sooky big rottweilers - yet both still had 'natural guard instincts' for their territories when we were not home.)

Please don't do this either. I'm sorry, I know this is not the place for this discussion, but dog training has come a long way since hitting, yelling, and "scruffing." It upsets me to see people recommending such "training" techniques. That'll be all the threadrot from me.

Could someone please recommend a functional and free online dvd players?

I'm just going to quote and repost this as I don't think the language in the above quote even conveys explicitly what my enquiry was all about. So please no one go ballistic.

Basically all the information on my computer was wiped. Which left me without PowerDVD (obviously enough a common programme that allows you to watch DVDs).
I do not have the loading cd for PowerDVD and possibly I never did. My problem lies in the fact that Windows Media Player is possibly lacking codecs (I'm not even entirely sure what these are or even if this is the specific problem. It's just a term I've seen bandied around Barbelith from time to time). Either way my computer no longer plays DVDs. DVD's seem to be recognised as such in my system so I do think that the needed drivers are present.
Therefore I think that the problem lies in the Window Media Player programme (as well as my own technical ineptitude).
So finally could anyone recommend a free online DVD playing programme which may solve this specific problem? Or indeed can anyone else extract a reason, given the information in the above post, whereby I can resolve this problem?

for WMP to work on almost everything, you can download the kazaalite codec pack.
you dont need kazaa lite, it just gets called that.

i used to have a link.... i'm sure you can find it somewhere.

Toksik: You officially rock socks. (it's a good thing).
It seems to have worked I think via Windows Classic Media Player.

Whothehell@where: You are completely right I could buy a dvd player or indeed use the flatshared one in our kitchen/living room. However buying a dvd player would necessitate fixing my tv and while I am not skint I soon expect to be. Thusly it's more cost effective to use my computer which blatantly has the capacity for DVD watching squirrelled away somewhere in it's innards.
Also because the type of DVD I'm required to watch for my course (quite alot of silent and/or movement specific films: Soviet Montage etc) require a certain level of concentration in order to analysis and study effectively. Also I don't wish to foist them on my unsuspecting and usually uninterested flatmates.
So this method is really the most convivial all round.

Toksik=Rocks Socks if I haven't mentioned it already.

All of Ibis' advice is right. I too am very keenly into dog training and it has all come a long way. Scruffing is not the worst thing ever, but you need to understand that dogs have a very high pain threshold and it's much more the action and posturing which it creates that makes a difference so it doesn't need to be rough at all.
Your dog does need obedience training which is often all about training the person and the dog will follow. It's a great thing and you will learn so much and find out how to enjoy your dog in public and otherwise.(don't, just don't, I'm not going to re-word that) A dog which is making you feel uncomfortable in public will lead to lawsuits and dog deathrow.
Reward good behaviour, ignore(but correct by education)bad behaviour. Miracle cure for naughty dogs(and children).
I've got a new dog who's going through the whole new home training thing. She's great and one thing I had to remember was to teach her fun things as well as obedience. Yesterday she learned to speak on command and she's really enjoying going down the pub more since she can hold conversations. Silly me...Seriously, dogs are fun loving creatures and they want to please you so that's a lot to build on. Good luck with the heeler.
