Aaargh! would any of you lovely people be able to tell me the name of the film I'm thinking of?

It was set during a civil conflict in the Balkans I think, (terrible with Politics, History, and Geography) and involved one guy from each side trapped in a trench, one of them was laying on a land-mine and couldn't get off it. I think. The UN were in it as well.

Name that Book (or it's author)

Five or six years ago an elderly (I think...) woman had her everyday diary-type thoughts and observations published as a book. Certain bits of the media - Radio 4 & the weekend papers - took an interest in it because of its supposed novelty value; the woman was "an ordinary working class housewife who lived alone and hadn't done very much", being the gist of it. It was all about how she chatted to Mr Brown next door and did a bit of shopping etc.

Does anyone else remember it? I'd like to know the title and/or the author's name.

Sylvia Smith?

I think that might be the one - she wrote Misadventures, and then more recently Holidays.

Make that My Holidays, and it looks like there's another one called Appleby House.

Ariadne, you are the most fantastic person that ever lived. That's the one! Thank you! *beams*

New Question: Why is it so bad for men to get Chicken Pox?

Saveloy
14:24 / 02.06.06
IIRC, it can cause sterility.

that's what I'd heard too but couldn't find any real evidence for it. I know I was encouraged to get it though when I was young. How very strange.

Question spurred by Stoat's Seventies Slang thread:

What did happen to white dog poo?

Why was it white in the first place?

IIRC, it can cause sterility.

Sterilty after puberty which is why you'd want your boy child to get it. Hence "pox parties".
Chickenpox also can cause shingles in the elderly.

Right, I just rented Queer as Folk from the library on video, and when I put it in the machine and press play I get the initial screen with a date, LSDN number, and some other long number, and then just black squiggliness. I've tried both tapes and fast-forwarded lots, all to no avail. Have I done something stupid with my VCR setup (entirely possible), am I doing something else stupid, is my machine protesting against the sinful naughtiness therein, or has something nefarious been done to library property? and if so, what? and is there somebody I can kick about it?

Hmm, sounds like someone's done something nasty to the video tape. As an ex-library worker, that sounds depressingly like the sort of thing a library regular would do- a lot of them have too much time on their hands.

Oh, bum. I was hoping it was me being a doodoohead.

As a former library worker then, LR, what should I do? Take the tapes back and tell someone they've been wiped? I'm inclined to come over all guilty-looking and worry that the library person will think *I* wiped them... but I should tell the library staff, right?

I just have such a guilty face.

Well, I reckon you should check your tape player's set up right, try playing the tape a few more times, and then, yes, definitely go back and tell them at the library- you'll have to give the tape back anyway, they'll probably check it, and if you haven't told them about the problems they'll think you messed it up and hid that fact from them.

What did happen to white dog poo?

Why was it white in the first place?

Could someone explain this to me?

Is "white dog poo" a literal phenomenon? Or is it a "clever" name for something else?

All Acting Regiment

I always had this idea that it was regular dog poo, whitewashed by boy scouts so that the elderly and blind would see it and not tread in it.

Which is a bit ridiculous. Because painting it white would make it harder to see. And then, why didn't they just pick it up and bag & bin it?

But there we go.

why didn't they just pick it up and bag & bin it?

With grabby sticks, obviously. Not with their bare hands.

I always had this idea that it was regular dog poo, whitewashed by boy scouts so that the elderly and blind would see it and not tread in it.

I don't believe that painting it any color would enable it to be visible to the blind...

So was it a uniquely Seventies thing?

I saw it as late as 1999/2000.

Wasn't it some crap additive in the dog food. Chalk?

I saw it as late as 1999/2000.

Maybe it was in celebration of the millenium or something?

I haven't seen it since the early-mid nineties.

Nor have I seen any furry dog poo.

Perhaps it's a youth thing; you're younger and shorter and a bit grosser, so you're closer to the shit and also a bit more interested in it...

But think I'd still notice a white dog poo if I saw one...

And yes Liger, we are just talking about dog faeces that was the colour of paper. Always reminded me of that white-tack. Remember that? Blu-Tac, but white?

Triplets

Perhaps it was an Invisible turd.

one point, oh
12:38 / 03.06.06
According to 5 seconds research with google:

...the characteristic white dog turds of yesteryear are rarely found; they were caused by weathering of dog excrement rich in bone meal.

Apparantly we use vegetable protein more nowadays.

Calcium. Bones from butchers' shops. Fewer local butchers = fewer pet dogs gnawing on bones. So the story goes, anyway. I don't know that there's any truth in it.

White-tac? Got stacks of it in me room as I type. It's holding up a poster of Davros (always a conversation starter).

Have Mars bars been renamed "believe"? seriously?

17:20 / 03.06.06
Not strictly renamed, it's something to do with that competition where big boys run around after a bit of leather. I think the neighbouring country is taking part.
