Is there a word similar to naivete that implies the same level of unworldliness but connotes unrealistic pessimism instead of unrealistic optimism?

'Emo'?

Mistoffelees

Yes, Goth and Emo was my first idea, too!

What about my duck?!

So do you guys have to work today (Triplets mentioned working today in another thread)? It´s a holiday here!

I'm not at work. I'm wearing a horrible old t-shirt, eating cherry bakewells and reading burroughs. Also, I'm thinking about my dream last night: a dream of a tiny cat. About the size of a large caterpillar.

Dunno about anyone else.

No work, Misto! No work here! Enjoying the sun in the little garden, planning for Morrissey at Alexandra Palace later.

Triplets, re duck: Ce canard là est violeur is the best I can do, you buff little butt bunny. I don't know the French for mallard.

Triplets

Xoc, mon héros!

Yep, I'm in work as I've won the come in on a bank holiday" lotto apparently.

Well, it is a holiday down here, and I am going to work later. It sucks! (the Sun keeps whispering "beach, beach, beach")

Mistoffelees
10:48 / 01.05.06
Cheers, Xoc! You´re so lucky!. Morrissey doesn´t give any concerts here, except for one or two festivals.

And canard is right, according to my french dictionary.

Ce canard là est un violeur sounds better to me.

"Colvert" (masc) is, I think, a better word for mallard. "Canard" is just any old duck.

Mourne Kransky
12:05 / 01.05.06
Good point, M, re indefinite article. My version suggests, perhaps, that rape is the duck's profession.

Triplets

With mallards that wouldn't be far off. They are uncontrollable sexbeasts!

Okay, so I live in the UK, how can I download stuff from US itunes?

Surely it's possible.

Mistoffelees
17:39 / 01.05.06
I´ve heard from UK people, that it´s not possible. And I can´t download either (I wanted to get some tv series). It´s really annoying and stupid.

Does anyone know hwere I could find a net version of some kind of training manual for sailors or pilots?

Spaniel
18:24 / 01.05.06
I suspect it's more than just annoying and stupid and has to do with binding contractual obligations to terrestrial networks, but, that said, said obligations shouldn't get in the way of me exploiting loopholes in the itunes system.

Hrumph!

What's that glorious high-inducing smell that comes from printers and photocopiers?

What's that glorious high-inducing smell that comes from printers and photocopiers

Solvents dissolving the fats in your brain. That buzzing is brain cells dying. Like when you're really drunk.

If you're talking laser printers, i think the smell is Ozone. Or so i hear. Something to do with the electrics turning normal 02 to 03. (See here and here)

But yeah, the high is the same as the high you get from exhaust fumes or drowning - it's your brain cells popping in interesting ways.

When i was a kid, i had plans of sending big banks of photcopiers up into the sky on a hot air balloon to sort out the ozone troubles. I still kinda think it's a good idea...

High, indeed.

Not too sure Deva, a couple of places in Ireland sell them second hand so I assume it would be similar there?

My own question: Any news of George Galloway's career trajectory since Celeb BB?

A martial arts query: what, exactly, is an "axe kick"? I've heard the term several times. All I've gleaned is that it involves bringing your foot up above your head and smashing the heel of your foot down onto some poor schmuck's forehead. Is that basically it?

Dead Megatron
13:47 / 06.05.06
I'm not sure, Deva, since I study martial arts in Portuguese, and the style I practice is pretty much "high-kick-less", but my intuitive mind tells me you got it rigth.

I have a small transaltion question. What does the expression "wind-shot eyes" mean? The context is this: a man is in Afghanistan with aa guide who's smoking opium and has his "wind-shot eyes closed". Does "wind-shot" refers to the shape of the eyes, or colour, or is it a side effect of opium smoking, like red-eyeness for pot users?

I have a Canon A75 digital camera that takes short video clips. When I upload them onto my PC they're MVI files. I just uploaded a 2 min clip to YouTube and it takes foooooohhhhreverrr to load. Is there a way to correct that? Change the format? Anything?

Does IKEA where you live have the same silly names for the furniture and other stuff they sell, like they have here?

Examples: Ektorp, Kramfors, Stödis, Lycklig, Jigga, Koral Bläckfisk, Hungrig

Cat Chant

That sounds like Ikea names in England, Mist.

Can anyone speak Russian? Does this 404 page give any information about where the site might have gone, or is it just a standard 'page not found' sort of a thing? I miss the site. (It had pretty Harry Potter fan art.)

Babelfish says:

Oy There is no page, to which you turned themselves, for some reason. How this could occur? Give let us be dismantled. * to you we could send incorrect reference. * you could collect address with the error. * page with this address was once here, but now here for some reason it does not exist. * thus were formed stars. In any event lost the presence of spirit should not be. In the Internet there are very many other pages. But if to you was necessary precisely this, try to ask in that person, who sent the inoperative reference (or it published). By the way! We have an entire site for the search for other, working pages:

Well, that's told me! Thanks, ERandy. (I must learn how to do Babelfish, it seems - I think I tried a translation programme on this but couldn't make it work.)

Mistoffelees: quote me a product name and I'll find it in the Oz catalogue for you. I do recognise a couple of those names, however, so I'd say they're the same worldwide.
