Ah thanks guys! I'm looking to become a microwave dinner connoisseur, moving soon and no point in stocking up on foodstuffs. And it's always bothered me that I perhaps wasn't correctly inputting perforations.

Mordant said: I've inherited a classfull of 16 4-5 year olds...I've essentially got to get control of a class that's been accustomed to doing pretty much what it wants...crowd control tips would be appreciated.

I have no personal experience with this, but I've heard anecdotally that here in Melbourne the in thing for primary school crowd control is clapping. The idea, I think, is to teach the group a bunch of cool clapping rhythms, each with a different purpose attached to it. Then, when you want them to all be quiet and listen, for example, you clap the designated rhythm and they all clap it back to you and then be quiet. I imagine you could easily google some more detailed pedagogical instructions on how to make this work. Or if you like, PM me and I will ask my primary school teacher friend.

Sorenson: that clapping idea sounds like genius! I've no idea if it would work on children, but I think I would be completely sucked in by it.

xk: Would this broader ethical living thread be any use?
I know it's not charity specific but hopefully ethical living would incorporate support for charity. Maybe, if the thread starter (Nina, I think) was agreeable, some explicit reference to charities could be added to the summary/first post. (I really like that thread and would be happy to see it bumping around visibly on conversation, so I could be pimping it for my own ulterior motives here, admittedly.)

What makes excrement green sometimes?

Excrement can become green by two basic methods. Either a combinative of in food dyes (naturally occuring or otherwise) or an excess of bile salts that may have been introduced by the digestive process to break down a particularly reluctant piece of food.

Okay then, I have an interview next week for a job that I'm pretty qualified for, the only problem is they want me to sit an Excel test. Now, while I have used Excel a great deal in the past, I haven't had much use for it over the last couple of years, and what I do know is mainly self taught and suffers the attendant problems.
The test itself is apparently pretty basic (no macros and the like), so what I'm looking for is some kind of online tutorial or resource that can round out my knowledge a little and give me some basics by next Wednesday.

How should one cook a squash? I've got an orange lump of granite here masquerading as foodstuff....

squash:

I often hack it into large rings, remove the seeds and use a small sharp knife to remove the waxy skin. Then hack into large-ish chunks boil until tender drag it out /drain it mix/mash with spice (garlic/cayenne/pepper/ginger) oil or butter and sunflower seeds and sometimes mix with baby spinach (which wilts nicely when in contact with the hot squash).

Also I make a lovely squash soup by boiling it in enough water to cover the squash then using a puree wand to mix it into a creamy consistancy. Add either cream or more water (with a bit of sesame oil) and spices. Sometimes I get KRWAZY and add cashews. Is a very nice vegan soup when made without the moo.

Nonossnoy : Best advice I can give is to go to a temp agency and take the test there a few times. By the time you walk in for your interview on Wednesday you'll be a king. I did this myself (not on purpose just had a string of agency interviews in one day) and while the first test was pitiful, I aced the third one.

And xk, I love Squash soup. One of the reasons I embrace Autumn is to eat my partner's home made soup.

Thanks, Six, but I'm pretty sure that would be totally impractical. I've got a full time job and a baby and I can only afford to devote a couple of hours an evening to this little exercise (oh, and a good few hours at the weekend).

Doesn't Excel have an in built tutorial? Strangely brown I've always found the tutorials within the software themselves pretty good.

You got any idea what sort of things they'll be expecting you to be able to use it for, Boboss? I'm using it constantly in my current job - basically self-taught (did three months of it in academic study about five years ago, but other than that...), but if there's anything I could help with I'd be happy to.

Hypothetically speaking, if a couple in their mid-20s were pregnant with their fourth child and inquired about the dad's having a vasectomy, and were told (by the doc) he was too young but the mom could have her tubes tied, would this be for medical reasons or just totally sexist reasons?

I'm suspecting medical, because ligation is (somewhat) reversible, while vasectomy isn't -- although that situation might be the result of deeper levels of sexism (medical control over reproduction, etc.)

But I'm not a doctor, and my information might be old besides.

I belive vasectomy is reversible, though not in all cases (the longer you have been vasectomized, the smaller is the chance for success in reversing it).

And there's also stories of doctors telling their female patients they should have their tubes tied with no actual medical reason for it, or even going ahead and doing it without even telling them (this is a bit of a "Third World" thing I guess. You know, not letting "poor, ignorant people" reproduce too much and all that). But I'm imagine this is not your case.

So, I wouldn't dismiss the sexism thing yet.

But I'm also speaking with no actual medical background or any real research on the matter. So, confirmation required on that.

IMO total absolute bullshit. Sexist or just fucked up.

My spouse and I shopped around for sterility procedures and ran into a lot of this kind of ill founded crap.

I finally found a good solid urologist who gave us an excellent low down. Age is not a factor but if there is a high rate of prostate cancer in the family that would be the only legitimate medical reason for concern with a vasectomy.

both tubal ligation and vasectomy are theoritically reversible but the cost to do so and the difficulty of it is horrendous.

The couple in question should get a second opinion as tubal ligation can cause intense pain during ovulation for some women (my mom) because of scar tissue build up. Not fun.

I checked all the options and really a vasectomy was hands down the safest, cheapest, most reliable way of sterility. Plus it is easily verifible (2 test samples need to confirm after the snip) while tubal ligation is not.

Thanks for the info everyone. I am not close enough with this "hypothetical" couple to offer any opinions or advice on their situation... but I was just curious for my own reproductive education's sake.

I don't think it does, WP: from a quick look at the google maps image there's no railway line pictured.

Anyone know how the internet can be made more robust and generally future-proof? In particular, who pays for the light cards to transmit and other overheads of the transatlantic cable?

WP - Try using Transport Direct to see wht your travel options are.

You will need fairly specific details but postcodes seem to do the trick.

In fact, if you look closely to the South of the A371 on Google maps, north-west of the town, there is a very clear old railway line.

Does anybody know where to find (be it on Youtube or anywhere else) the Cylon message that aired over on the credits of Lay Down Your Burdens part 2 on Sci-Fi America?

I've tried to find it on Youtube but it's frustratingly difficult.
