From toksik's extremely helpful link above we find out that this is...
A simple-to-make origami fortune teller (also called a cootie catcher).

A cootie catcher?? No. Why? Say it out loud - it just sounds filthy. "Want to play with my cootie catcher? Just stick your fingers in there..." Ewwwwww.

New question: Has anyone actually tried the new cock Coke, or whatever it's called? I'm a bit confused as to whether it is actually supposed to taste different, taste exactly the same but not have sugar in it (and why would that be a bloke thing??), or just be repackaged for knobs? I am not, of course, implying that anyone who has tried this is a knob. I'm just curious to know what it's like.

hiya TT. I've tried it and it's okay if you like fizzy pop. I only really drink coke when I'm hungover, and think diet coke is far too sweet in that aspartme way. Zero does the job, but with half a calory per 100 mils, part of me thinks what's the point? I'd prefer water.

Could someone provide me with information on a troop pullout by the Reagan Administration? I'm foggy on the details, but it had to do with the bombing of a US troop barracks followed by a withdrawl of troops from the region (Possibly in Beruit, but I could be wrong on that). Was the troop pullout the only response to this bombing from the Reagan Admin?

There's a lot of information available online on the bombing of both the US Marines' and French military barracks in Beirut in 1983. The Wikipedia entry and links from a Google search are good places to start for more details.

In brief, apart from some retaliatory airstrikes by both the US and France, the main result of the attacks was for the Multi-National Force to be withdrawn.

Clogged Ears

Can anyone recommend an effective off-the-shelf treatment for wax-filled ears? I'd like to avoid going to the nurse for an ear syringing and another lecture about cotton buds.

Olive oil. Two drops per ear each day will soften the wax up. Sounds like a joke, but it works, honest!

Ear candles. They work by gently vaporising the waxy gunk and then drawing it out, plus you get to stick a big waxed paper tube in your ear and set fire to it.

The goat's milk I buy sometimes has buyer's testimonies on the side.

Most of them seem to tell of a miracvulouis recovery from 'glue ear', 'gum ear' or general eary ickness once the sufferer started drinking goat's milk.

Might be worth a try.

I second the ear candles tho. really good fun.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys, I shall investigate. Ear candles sound good, as I'm after a quick fix (off on holiday soon).

Has anyone tried those ear spray thingies that sloosh water round your ear at pressure, rather like a proper syringing?

Hmm, not quite so keen on the ear candling idea now:

Sorry, toksik, I know nowt about Opera. But don't hurt them, please?

This might be a stupid question, but... Can someone tell me if this heat we're enduring can affect the steel strings on my acoustic guitar? I don't have, nor know how to use those little tuning gizmo's, so I tune by ear and there's therefore every chance it's me not the strings*. But I swear every time I get them in tune, they go out of tune again after only a few strums, and they're not new or particularly old strings either (and they were fine yesterday).

So, is it more likely to be me or the strings? Either way, I promise I'll restrain myself from moaning again in the 'The thing I hate most about the heat is...' thread.

*I mean, steel string guitars are played all over the world (in warm and cold climates), and most music venues and stages can get damn hot (what with all those lights an'all), so I figure this would be a huge problem if one's guitar strings kept (erm) warping, non?

Is the temperature changing? If you go from air conditioning to blazing sun, then yes, the strings will change rapidly and your tuning will get squonked.

But if it's just warm all the time, then no, the problem is probably your sweaty hands. Or maybe the wood's warping, but I doubt that it's that hot.

If turnmeric is the same stuff as haldi / tumeric, then I too would be extremely interested to know how to get it out of clothes generally.

And a messy eater, actually.

I don't think turmeric comes out, sorry- it's used as a natural dye IIRC. Bleach solution?

Putting this response about nukes here to avoid headshop threadrot Quantum, what scenario would you envision the US using such a weapon? It is indiscriminate. Use of such a weapon is not in our philosophy.

I think you'll find that your philosophy not only embraces nuclear weaponry but has every intention of using it if they feel like it. What scenario? I can think of a dozen, but don't take my word for it, the Pentagon has detailed plans already and has had for years;
The review lists seven countries – China, Russia, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, and Syria – against which the United States must be prepared to use nuclear weapons. It calls for the US to monitor relevant targets in those countries, and it even specifies several scenarios in which the use of nuclear weapons might be necessary, such as a North Korean invasion of the South."
Indiscriminate killing is pretty much policy if you ask me. Friendly fire? Carpet bombing? Do you really believe the propaganda you've been fed?

Do we actually need a new thread devoted to Dragon's utterly confident statements of the entirely incorrect? I was somewhat amazed by:

Would you have opposed the CIA's attempt to avoid the Sandanista's take-over of the Nicaraqua by organizing the Contras' attempt at socialization? I think this was during a time when the domino theory was in effect. Most likely the thinking was that we wanted to maintain some semblance of order with the population having more power, instead of allowing all the power to go to the top man.

The Sandinistas, who overthrew a dictatorship and instituted democratic elections, willingly stepping down from power when democratically defeated in 1990, were obviously opposed by the US in order to "maintain some sort of order with the population having more power, rather than allowing all the power to go to the top man".

I'm fascinated to know where he's getting his facts.

i am also having trouble getting dreamweaver to let me preview in explorer and i have no idea why.

Have you tried the following?

(based on DW MX 2004 v.7.0 for Windows. I cannot provide information on Macs, sorry)

Edit>Preferences>Preview In Browser

Click + to add a browser

Name it "Explorer"

browse to the location of the .exe file, which is usually: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Then tick the relevant box for primary or secondary browser for previewing.

IE should then appear in File>Preview In Browser>iexplore.exe

opera browser.
how does one make it 'go'?
it has no go button, and enter dont do shit.

The Opera problem seems weird, as pressing Enter should just load a page - what version are you using, and have you tried re-installing to see if that clears the problem?

Anyhow, if you want to add a Go button to the toolbar (in Opera 9), rightclick the toolbar in question or go to Tools>Appearance, and then select the Buttons tab.

Choose Browser View, and drag the Go button to the toolbar next to the URL gadget, and OK the change.

Please tell us that the innocent victims will no longer feel the terrible wrath of Toksik?

I don't know about linen, but I've removed turmeric from denim (for the most part) with OxiClean Stain remover. The kind in the bucket you use to presoak stuff before it goes in the wash. I have no idea how it works.

My question is this: can everyone who reads this please go here and vote for my housemate, Georgia Blackie? Because she's about 25 votes behind at the moment, and she'll be unbearably cranky if she's beaten by a smurf.
Also, she's broke, so the $1000 for art stuff she would win, if she won, would really help her out.

Your help is appreciated, but don't feel constrained to vote for her if you think other art is better (though, only a vote for George or Ms. Cheung's works will mean anything, since the next person down is about 800 votes behind).

Thanks!

I'm probably being an eejit, but (before I think of voting) how do you view your friend's work from the page you linked to?

Nice one, for the heads up on that site, by the way. e.g. I really like (amongst others) Rebecca Hassett's photography.

Slightly strange question for the elderly role playing fraternity on Barb if such a thing exists. There was a print of the first edition D&D Dungeon Masters Guide that had cover art of a wizard opening a door? Does anyone know who painted it? I've looked on the interweb thingy but I suspect my Web-Fu is weak.

First hardcover edition, or the paperback pamphlets that came before that? I suspect (though I'd have to do a lot of digging to be sure) that E. Gary Gygax did his own illustrations in the pamphlets. The hardcovers, I'm nearly sure it was the same artist who did the Player's Manual, if that helps. The thief prying the ruby eye out of the red idol.
