With Microsoft Paint you can watch the picture on the monitor, without any windows or anything. Just the picture with ctrl + G.

Does Photoshop have the same function?

astrojax and Mist, sorry I can't answer your questions, but maybe you (and others) can help me with the following long, etiquette/ethical based question:

I just turned on my goggle-box and saw somebody I went to junior school with. This person is talented (IMHO) and ze has had a fair amount of fame and recognition over the past couple of years, although sadly not enough. So, when I saw hir on my screen I thought, "I wonder how hir career is these days" and did an interweb search for information. However, I was alarmed to discover hir Email address and a mobile phone number listed on a well known website as... well, we all know how many nutters there are on the interweb, right?

Anyhoo, without really thinking I sent hir a nice and polite Email to inform hir about all this, but now I'm suddenly panicking thinking "what business is this of yours? For all you know, that's hir agent's Email and mobile number, you div." So, what do you reckon: did I do the wrong thing sending hir an Email? Have I just made a fool of myself, again?

For the record, I still have an (albeit) loose contact with a member of hir family, and, although I haven't seen hir since we were teenagers, we always got on OK: so, ze should know I'm no threat; and I didn't use my paranoidwriter.com Email account.

Hi All

May I know what should I key in as the 25 character Product Key?
The number I found printed on the CD-ROM is 15 charcters.
The number I found in a file on the CD-ROM is 32 charcaters long.
I have tried these 2 numbers but I can't still install the software.
Please help and this time I will write down the names of all those who help me in a easy to find book and I will mention your names and thank you frequently........

I think, PW, that it should be ok. If it is the agent's adress it'll be reet, if it's hers and she didn't know the potential dangers then ze'll be glad you told zir.

PW: Calm down. You didn't do anything weird or creepy. Unless you sent hir a naked photograph of yourself holding a garden gnome. (You didn't, did you?)

I thought I'd deleted all traces of that photo. FYI, it was the gnome's idea.

Sheesh, I can make a right eejit of myself sometimes, can't I? I reckon it's a safety mechanism I've learned over the years, a kind of pressure valve which releases self-es-steam before I explode with arrogance.

New, technical, maybe stupid question:

The freezer department of our fridge was completely blocked with ice, and today I finally decided to sort it out. Problem was there was so much ice (and nowhere suitable to let it defrost naturally), I realised I'd have to chip a load of the ice out with a knife... Yep, stupid me.

So, I've managed to puncture the plastic lining of the fridge and I'm concerned about whether this poses any threat to myself and my neighbours. It's hissing (whistling) slightly. It has (of course) been switched off since I started defrosting and I've now left the last of the ice to melt on its own (although I might use a hairdryer later, if need be).

As far as I know Freon isn't explosive, but is this situation potential dangerous. i.e. if I were to switch the fridge back on at some point would I be blasted to smithereens?

Oh and apologies to the environment, of course.

Yes. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but I've done it accidentally a few times. I was trying to use the "Print Screen" option, but when I'd go into Photoshop to paste the result, it would still be showing the video I was watching... in Photoshop.

PW:

I did the same thing once with an office fridge and a screwdriver. The only thing (if you didn´t inhale the hissing substance) you have to worry about, is the fridge not working anymore. If it works after the deicing, then that´s fine.

Depends on how old the thing is— if it's old enough to have freon in it YOU HAVE DOOMED US ALL, if not then it's probably ammonia; don't get it near chlorine.

*
20:31 / 07.08.06
Oh, and also if it uses ammonia, obviously you don't want ammonia leaking into your food, so don't let it do that.

unless you smoke, of course.
if you've smoked a fag recently there's ammonia coursing through your dirty poisoned veins right now.

i thought i saw a thread on coke vs pepsi somewhere, but hey...

surely [and this is my question] this following statement must be an urban myth?:

Coca-Cola's original recipe, according to company policy, is kept in a bank vault in Atlanta, where only two executives -- banned from travelling on the same plane -- know it.

if only two execs know the recipe, who makes it all?? these two must be bloody tired, all that coke all by themselves....

(from a cute story from india, where courts have ordered coke and pepsi to make public their recipe following allegations of too much pesticide in their products! )

Yaaaaaaay! The fridge still works! (fingers crossed) I covered up the holes with electricians tape, but to be honest I don't think this has really made much difference anyway.

This is the best thing that's happened to me in weeks. Thank Dog for refrigerator miracles.

Haus, I reckon you'll be OK with your metal shelf thingymy; if mine can still work, there's every chance yours will as well.

Double-yay!

Oh boy, I sure am asking a lot of questions lately. Sorry if that's annoying, but...

New question: my MAC keyboard has suddenly decided that the right cursor arrow will now be a carriage return button. I've tried messing around with "num lock" (to no avail), the keyboard's clean, and all the other keys are fine (e.g the shift button between the normal carriage return button and the cursor keys); but I do use this key quite regularly, so... Anyone know why this is happening?

(By the way, my friend from junior school's manager Emailed me back today [see above] and thanked me for my concern, so I didn't make that much of an eejit out of myself after all -- in case anyone was wondering).

Hello people who know things: I have a digital camera software problem which I'm hoping someone can help me with:

I have borroewd the office Canon powershote A95 to take pictures of manuscripts, right, easy enough. I want to download the pictures at home to save our poor wqebmaster the problem of trying to do it (or teach me to do it) at work tomorrow. To download the latest version of the software available at Canon you have to have an earlier version, so I found one and downloaded the program files and unzipped them. But they are in a separate folder on my hard drive and don't seem to be installed (because the update doesn't think the program has been installed). The only file in the programme files that looked like an install file doesn't want to open because my windows XP computer doesn't recognise the language. Am I just ignorant and is there an easy solution? Please help...

The easy solution is just to plug the camera into your computer. The Canon software is to add value and create differentiation rather than necessary, I imagine. WinXP will almost certainly open the cameras and scanners wizard, or recognise the camera as a separate drive, and you can get the photos off from there.

Regarding refrigerators:
Haus: denting is okay. If it didn't hiss when you did it, you're just fine.
PW: I'd unplug the fridge and abandon use of it - when you release freon from your fridge or freezer lines, regular air gets in there. If you try to run the compressor using regular air instead of freon, the water will damage the works, and you could end up with a fire in the motor. Depending on where you live, you may or may not be able to get it fixed (it's illegal to repair freon lines here in Canada, but that may not be the case elsewhere). Regardless, it won't get sufficiently cold again and could catch fire - get someone out to take a look at it or get a new one. I did the same thing about two months ago, and the fridge was really old, so the landlord just replaced it, but before I even told him what happened I did some research, and everything I read told me to turn it off.

Shit - the - bed!

Cailín, I don't actually think it's a Freon fridge, probably late 80's, a bit like the one in the photo for the wiki refridgerator entry, but older with a metal freezer shelf on top. (I've tried looking for it on the Interweb, but had no luck). The source of the hissing was hard to identify, but might have been air escaping from the ice defrosting (fingers crossed).

Do you know if this this still dangerous?

Oh shit, I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight, but those who share the fridge are going to bloody kill me if we have to empty it and then replace it, especially as you have to pay an extra £20 (or more, sometimes) to dump them at a tip.

All - I - bloody - need.

Freon, as well as being a specific gas, has become a sort of generic term for coolant gases - so it doesn't have to be freon, per se. If the freezer is still getting properly cold, you're aces, not to worry. If it isn't, is there a way to turn off just the freezer? If you can do that, I'd shut it off. If not, really, get somebody to take a look. If you're in a rental, you can always call the landlord and say that it isn't working well. Just take the tape off the hole before he comes to look - playing at innocence and all that. If not, get someone in. Not that it has to be some terribly expensive professional, just somebody who knows a bit about these things (I'd come over, but I appear to be on the wrong side of the ocean). The motor is usually in the bottom. Make sure it isn't giving off an excessive amount of heat, or seems to be running all the time (because it shouldn't). The good news is that the refrigerants used now are non-toxic.
A link to common fridge Q&A.

That's no excuse! Get yo ass over here pronto!

But seriously, Dog bless you, Cailín. The freezer is definitely still getting cold, and the back does seem to get warm, but then it does seem to click off on its cycle like before, and then the back cools again. -- I've been obsessively checking it every half our so since I read your post, and my neighbour who shares the fridge, and another who doesn't, seem to think it'll be alright. But I'll go through that Q&A you linked and keep an eye on the heat it gives off, just to be safe.

Again, thanks comrade. And sorry all, for hogging this thread.

Uh... Is anyone willing to provide some tutelate regarding Finalcut on the Mac, if only to stop me pitching the damn thing out the window?

Specifically, I'm having issues importing footage. Initially, whenever I would import it would get around two frames in before complaining about "Dropped Frames" and throwing it's dummy out of the pram and refusing to go any further.

So, on the help manual's instigation, I turned off a certain option regarding dropped frames, and now it records twice as many frames before complaining that it can't and advising me to record clips either side of the tape. Which, y'know, I can't, because it complains of the same thing again.

I'm thinking dropped frames, from all the references in the manual, refers to audio - and I would be just as happy recording without audio and then importing it at a later stage, but for now I would honestly settle for being able to import some clips... Can anyone help? Please? There's a cookie in it for you!
