Come on - you know it's that time in a thread to start with the Morrissey. It's the only way out of this mess.

Oh, one more comic about Drag Queens
Or bald guys, and chimps and mutant teens
"But somebody's got to write that!" ze screams
"So why why shan't it be me ?"
But ze would die if we heard hir post from the heart
Which is hurt...

Ride our minds
If you must, George
But there’s always a line you don’t cross
Time is short
Don’t be cruel
Oh you don’t know the power
In what you’re saying
Oh ...
And so Haus froze where he stood
And he looked to the ground
And he cried
He cried

But is there really any need to be so bloody harsh, and quite frankly, nasty?

Hi, Paranoidwriter! How would you characterise Oddman's lengthy tirade? I got a whiff, in amongst ill-informed, incoherent and sycophantic, of harsh and nasty. Just sayin'.

Hi, Paranoidwriter! How would you characterise Oddman's lengthy tirade? I got a whiff, in amongst ill-informed, incoherent and sycophantic, of harsh and nasty. Just sayin'.

Hi Haus. Hmmm... I just re-read Oddman's post, and you have a point there. But still, sometimes it's better to be a "bigger man", so to speak, and "there's more than one way to skin a cat" (sheesh, I sound like my Mother!). Granted, it's not easy (and I'm not very good at it myself)), and such statements sound pious to the cynical ear. But even so, I can't help thinking that sometimes some of the flaming that goes on around here is on the side of overkill and tainted with more than a little vitriolic schadenfreude. Sometimes, of course, it's just harmless banter, but on occasion it feels as though I'm watching a gang tormenting an injured animal and loving the power-kick they seem to get out of it.

I'm probably wrong, of course, but I find it hard to sit back in silence when I think someone is suffering a form of abuse. But please, I REALLY don't want to cause trouble. I just thought someone should say something before the insults got out of hand. Also, I'm very tired and that probably isn't helping my interpretation and/or my ability to communicate properly.

Right, I'm off to bed! G'night all.

The man who is directly responsible for the existence of this place checked in on us, and what does he find? A demeaning comment made by a long-time member of the community. What is that demonstrating? This is supposed to be a place of intellectual discussion, not a cesspool of slander.

Fucking hell, AS IF. It's not like he checks us out once a year or something, I bet he's around quite a bit once one of his comics is released. Just because he doesn't post, it doesn't mean that he doesn't read stuff. Calm down man.

Yeah, maybe I'm wrong. I think he at least checks some of the threads that are about his comics though, like he must've done to see the post in the Superman thread.

I know this is hugely arrogant but I wondered whether Oddman was performing a good parody of my pompous-fanboy response to Haus on the original thread.

Anyway, though the Lost (US) thread is mined with spoilers, it does feature a hand-drawn map of the island, by Oddman, that puts all his posts in perspective for me. It precisely labels "bits of raft", "hot hot Evangeline Lily" and "Sawyer and the Black Guy".

Kovacs: That would be optimistic. Near as one can tell, Oddman is entirely sincere, and sees no irony in telling us all what Barbelith is for, having joined in... ooooh... September 2005. I'd be interested to see whether he manages a response to Jack F and others. We probably need a Barbelith junior forum, like Xorn's Special Class. Eon, with his incredible ability to read our leader's mind, could teach it.

Paranoidwriter: When you say, I find it hard to sit back in silence when I think someone is suffering a form of abuse... you seemed not to have a problem when the someone was me and the abuse was coming from Oddman. I feel your actions may be at odds with your self-image. If you want to be more congruent, re-reading things before rather than after deciding how to react to them might be a good idea - if this thread is demonstrating one thing it is that the discussion people have in their heads for reference is often not actually the one going on - cf kovacs and Meludreen in the original Superman thread, Oddman here, and of couurse Mr. George himself.

(Oh, Jack F - just to clarify -I'm not really expecting an apology. I'm a realist. I merely believe that if your first post makes allegations, and the basis for those allegations is then requested, then your next post should probably either substantiate or apologise for the allegations made, if you want to represent yourself as interested in the fair treatment of other people. That's all. I think one of the things that makes me a bit sad about this is that GM appears on the strength of this example not to have a very high opinion of his readers. Of course, he's under no obligation to - he makes comics and we can consume or not consume them as we wish, but, yeah, it's a shame).

Oddman: I just read what you wrote elsewhere what you said about my wife.

How. Dare. You? You should probably leave Barbelith. Now.

After rereading Oddman's "Lost Map" post, I find it hard to believe he's not what you folk are calling a jokesuit -- perhaps a lofty word for a troll.

Hey guys. This is my map of 'Lost'...it should be taken as 100% accurate. I think.

What's that thing where you make assumptions of personality without considering the outside factors. Ganesh, help me out here.

What's that thing where you don't notice words like "appears" and "on the strength of this example" because they don't fit in with what you want to have read, in order to justify the reply you want to make? I can't shake the feeling that it was mentioned just a few posts further up...

You're on your own, dude. The inclusion of "appears on the strength of this example" makes Haus's comment Not An Assumption. Your own statement, though, lacking such qualifiers, would be rather closer to An Assumption.

Them's the rules.
