ok...here's a really strange one.

a few months ago I was in the university library and I spotted a few pieces of torn up book cover on the floor. Being the magpie type that I am, I picked them up, maybe to use in a design project. I noticed there was some writing on the back but paid it no real heed. So I shoved em in my pocket and when I got home they went on my desk, where they stayed for months.

So my ex-girlfriend dropped by the other day to drop some of my stuff up and being...curious...she picked the pieces of book up and put em together. Lo and behold, the writing on the back had her email address written on it. It was definately not either my nor hers handwriting.

bit strange, eh?

Tonight I was at an outdoor cafe, about to call a friend whose birthday party I was about to attend...the party was in approx. 1 hour and I was about 6 blocks away rom where it would be held.

I opened up my journal/little black book which had her number and opened to the page with her number. At the exact moment I picked up my cell phone to call her, she walked right past me on the sidewalk. (I, of course, said hello.)

today, was reading house of leaves. I got to a paragraph in Johnny Truant's footnotes where he mentions the Zonules of Zinn. i had no idea what these were, so i wikipedia'ed them.

I shut the book, went to sleep, woke up 20 minutes later starving so i got in my car and went to a local pizza joint.

As i'm driving back to my house, i look in the window of a volunteer record store that has some sort of football jersey displayed in the window.

oh the back of the jersey is:

forgot to mention the most pertinant part, when I found the pieces of card we were still together, by the time she noticed her email was written on it we'd broken up. the address was ripped right down the middle.

House of Leaves generates mad coincidence in my experience, I suspect because it can almost induce a bizarre fugue state of paranoia and over-alertness. Love that book.

Here's a coincidence- It also helps if you talk about that one time you sent a Goetic demon against the trig teacher who gave you a B-, and the demon totally killed him. Then you popped over to Chesed for a pint. Doc Checkmate

Bizarrely, while at school my uncle taught my friend and I an elementary curse. We didn't take it too seriously, when our fundamentalist RE teacher pissed him off my friend cursed him, haha.
He had a heart attack the next week and had to retire. We got a young and pretty RE teacher who taught comparative religion instead of Christian dogma. I told him not to curse people, and have been overly cautious in my practice for years because of it.
Can I have my flameworthy ass hat even though it was my best mate not me? We were too young to drink and had never heard of Chesed at the time but that's gotta count.

Old enough to hex, old enough to drink. It's one of the main platform points in my senatorial campaign.

When I started my 10 day fast I did a multi stage tarot reading on its success. I pulled the first card as a single overview and got Strength.
In my daily use deck this is a tribal African woman sitting with a lion companion. Anyhow I took it is a good sign possibly meaning I'd either complete all 10 days or at least 8.
The other readings indicated I would have an ordeal of some sort which I assumed would be the tattoo session I had planned to get while fasting.

On day 6 my 20lb maine coon cat got stuck hanging upside in the window after it slammed closed on his foot. While trying to rescue him, I received many very deep bites in my left forearm, he's a saber tooth with extra long fangs and can't close his mouth completely because of the length. He was crazed with pain and freaked. My spouse had to open the window as I was dealing with holding the cat and being attacked. After the cat took off I immediately collapsed into pain inspired hysterics. The low blood sugar left me without any real endorphins.

I was planning on having the tattoo sssion a few hours later for my right forearm. My left, which is a gory mess now, is reserved for sacred ritual scars.

A few hours later I started going into shock and was debating whether or not to break my fast. I recalled the Strength card in the Rider Waite deck is a woman wrestling with a lion. I broke my fast and the food helped my core temperature rise.

The catson is fine.

yup, sacred cat teeth scar marks are certain. For now living one handed and hoping not to get an infection.

I think I won actually, so the upright aspect of the card makes sense. Even as I was getting mauled I didn't give in to the urge to slam the source of the pain into the wall or punch catson with my other hand. I endured it because I knew he was just crazed with pain. It felt like a gom jabbar test.

...though honestly if my spouse hadn't arrived soon I would have most likely passed out from the pain. The fast had made me pretty weak at that point.

This has gifted me with more caution when doing readings. I made a mistake by thinking I knew what the cards were detailing because of my plans. Hubris.

While walking to the train this morning I found myself pondering something odd that's happened to my brain in the last year or so. Till recently I've always thought in sentences. When I had something to figure out I'd talk to myself about it, describe it to myself in words. But lately, sometimes, abstract ideas appear in my head as images - whether it's a picture that explains the idea perfectly, or nifty little 3D schematics with arrows and moving parts and stuff. They feel instantaneous, unlike the words, which I'm aware take a tiny amount of time.

(I'm wondering if I should blame/thank the extradimensional plant spirits. But anyway, the coincidence...)

So on the train I took out one of a bunch of academic essays I'd brought along to proofread for work. I hadn't looked at it. All I knew was that it was about dyslexic art students. On page 2 was a perfect statement of what I'd been trying to describe to myself - a theory of cognitive styles with a comparison of verbal/linear and spatial/visual/instantaneous ways of thinking. It had graphs and everything. And recommendations for further reading. Brrrr.

I have a little enamel badger badge I wear, and often mention them here. Last night we stayed up around a campfire in the woods for the solstice, and heard a noise, so I shone my torch at it and we saw a real live badger! A male I think, wiffling away. Didn't see or hear any other creatures, and my intent is to use the solstice to turn a corner and improve my fortunes,so I consider that a good omen.

I felt like I was channelling Crimes of Fashion.

I've been thinking a lot about family, recently, and specifically about how maybe I should talk to those of them who are dead, but still hang around to help out, if I can hear them, but I don't actually have any kind of material connection to my ancestry (other than me, I guess).

But today, not only did my Grandmother promise to give me the family crest[1], later in the week, she gave me a picture of my great grandfather (and about 90 other people) at one of the most important events in his life, standing in front of a castle (sort of) which just so happens to be about 100 metres from where I am sitting (at home) right now.

So that was interesting.

Night before last, I dreamt I was surfing Barbelith. Looked up to the top of the page and realized I had '1 unread message'. "How odd. I hardly ever get messages," I thought. I woke up just as I clicked the link. "Hmph. Whatever." Showered, shaved, commuted, arrived at work.

I was in early, so I decided to surf a little and have my coffee. The front page loads and *ta-da*. I had '1 unread message'.

1) In the past 2 days I have run into 2 people who I taught when I was a substitute teacher in my hometown, both of whom know people who knows me.

2) The phrase "Coney Island of the Mind" , which I have never heard before but is apparently in a poem, has come into my experience twice in the past 3 days from very different sources.

3) Seen the name "McLeod" twice in the past 2 days, just after I was reflecting on old New Mutants artist Bob McLeod (he also inked Superman titles for years in the 90s) and how you pronounce his name, wonder where he is now...and both times it was people wondering how you pronounce the name "McLeod", not referring to the comic artist.

Spent a week and a bit in Cyprus where I was working on a tourist campaign, based on love and heart-shapes. so i took the liberety of paying homage to Aphrodite at Petra Tou Romiou (the beach where she came ashore). I bought a little statue in the kiosk opposite the beach, then wandered around looking for Heart-shaped rocks. Found one. Later that day, filming at a new location, though "wouldn't it be great if i found another heart-shaped rock". Just at that momnet, the camera van drow away, an there, under where the tire had been, was a hear-shaped rock. After that hearts started cropping up everywhere. Truly Aphrodite/Astarte smiled upon me.

Had a building explode this morning while I was walking down the street half a block away. A few people injured, but no one killed, thank goodness.

It sure would be an interesting coincidence if I could tie this to some event or thoughts I was having right before the event. ("I had drawn The Tower in a tarot reading the night before!" "I was thinking 'I wonder how often buildings explode around here?'")

But I can't.

Oh well.

yesterday I had a name pop in 3 times...

Once in Illmatic's lovely essay thread in convo I brought up Dr. Semmelweis.
Then while poking about online reading articles on random homepathic stuff I read about another Semmelweis (this time a modern person).
Then while I was reading the new sci-fi novel my sweetie gave me I read the name Semmelweis again.

Okay so it might be just a charged name that comes up a lot in sciencey stuffs but I thought it was quite odd.

I traveled from Louisville to Detroit by a railroad whose nickname was the "Big Four", my object being some business connected with my Book 4. The name of my express was the "Big Four"—it left from No. 4 platform at 4 p.m. My sleeping berth was No. 4 in Car No. 4; and my ticket was No. 44,444. I ought to have been April 4, I suppose; but it wasn't. Crowley, Magick Without Tears

A few days ago I lost my wedding ring. Had no idea where.

Since I often place it on my dresser with my change, I was afraid that I had stuck it in a pocket while getting dressed and somehow lost it during the day. I spent a few days going through my clothes and tearing apart my apartment and office looking for it.

Then I remembered something Lon Milo DuQuette said: that a certain Goetic demon, Vassago, was extremely helpful in helping people find lost items. In fact, DuQuette said that it wasn't even necessary to invoke Vassago through conventional means -- the mere copying and/or possession of his seal often was enough to make the item show up.

So I looked up Vassago's seal and posted it on the web on Friday. Here it is:

By Sunday my wife had found the ring knocking about in our dryer. Looks like it had been left in one of my pockets, as I suspected, and fell out as we were doing laundry.

So -- coincidence or magic?

Doesn't really matter to me. I'm just happy to have my ring back.

Babelfish tells me that "semmel weiss" means "roll knows," and "semmel weis" means "roll point."

I don't know if the "roll" is a noun or a verb.

Ah -- family says it's a Bavarian broetschen. When they get old, you can make dumplings out of them.

A couple of weeks back I had the opportunity to use a gallery space for a performance of my choosing. I planned to do something involving a lot of spinning and weaving and Norns-type imagery. Doing some research learned in ancient Greece the Fates were referred to as Moirae. Took my sewing machine into the shop to be repaired to use in the piece. The name of the technician was Moira.

Well, what a week its been, first off up to durham to look at cisco based training, great college, great people, not the course for me, the train trip involved some high weirdness, first off i encountered the part of myself that had an nde in barnsley coming up to 7 years ago now, highly unnerving at first, but manageable, on the way back, the trains were a nightmare 5 hours each way standing alot of the time, well on the way back i spent most of the trip crying reliving the after effects of my nde. The high was i got something back, something i thought i would never see again, a piece of me id left behind and given up on. turns out i needed him back and alot happier i am for it, soul retrieval in a trip to durham, bloody odd, but i aint complaining.

that was wednesday, thursday became non stop bagua and deliriously happy day, i have found a way to practice bagua in really tight circles around a candle, without burning the hair off my legs so far, its about getting exact coordination between foot and knee, its done very slowly like whirling dervish tai chi, if you follow me, preferably in a darkened room, very knackering, but the trance is so good.

well friday, today i preposed an idea to my job advisor for a business involving a spiritual aspect and a community based aspect, its not on paper yet, so i will say no more, but i am hopeful i may well get to do something i actually want to do with my life, we will see.

I was taken by bee keeping at durham, i had an immediate pull to it, apparently there is a shortage of bee keepers as well, so thats something to keep in the back of my mind.

Are there such things as serpent farms/sanctuarys?

So i guess my coincidence is i found myself while taking a trip to durham and more of myself on the way back again.

Yesterday I spotted the person I used to date before I met my spouse walkng a few blocks ahead of me and turning into the outdoor mall ze works in. I see hir every once in a while but I felt a compulsion to turn right into the same area. Ze was already out of sight but I felt the compulsion to stand in place with a feeling I was waiting for something.

I just stood waiting with a big fat smile on my face looking toward the end of the mall. After about 5 mintues I realized my spouse was walking toward me on hir way to lunch. Hir place of work is a block beyond the mall and ze uses it as a route to get pizza pretty much every day.

not a huge deal but slightly odd.

Having not heard the term used in at least five years, "Stockholm Syndrome" has cropped up three times in the past three days. One on the telly, once in a book and just now on dear old Barbelith.

And I'm going to Sweden in a week and a half. It's starting to freak me out a little, actually.

I'm a reference librarian at a public library. I answered the phone about an hour ago and the person calling wanted to know how she could go about finding an obituary which had been in the paper recently. She had heard through an unreliable source that her favorite teacher had passed away this past May and wanted to see if it was true and if so, wanted to send a card to the teacher's mom. I offered to do the look up for her over the phone and asked for the last name of the deceased. She told me. I paused and then heard myself saying, "Well, I'm sorry to have to tell you that it was your teacher, and she did die. I know because she was my cousin."

We live in a pretty large city, so the odds of me being related to the person she was looking for aren't all that good. As if that weren't coincidence enough, it turns out that I went to school with the caller's husband, who lived a couple doors down from my grandparents when I was a kid, and finally, her mother-in-law is my cat's vet!
