Are you saying the rest of us don't have proper jobs? I take offense, I have to deal with bereaved pensioners all the time. If that's not proper I don't know what is.

The Madeleine Bunting piece in today's Guardian is very, very good.

I think the fact "she" hasn't answered tells us all we need to know. "She's" busy being bribed by PFI consortiums, having a noseful of expensive cocaine with Julie Burchill in the back of the Groucho, hobnobbing in little bars in Westminster... no time for the likes of US!

Bye Woolly. It was nice while it lasted.

I will be staying on... but not very well on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when I work in a small and horribly busy office and everyone can see what I'm doing all the time and makes tsks when I even do email. Pah.

Ha! I am slaving over a badly formed website today and inventing code things. I would, however, like someone to bribe me with something. Anything really, I'm not expensive

On days when you can't be particularly present, can you just post "wooly is unwell"?

(Actually, now I come to think of it, I'm amazed Sax doesn't do that...)

We'll bribe you collectively. I'll have a whip round.

*passes envelope to Stoatie*

Don't know what we want you to do yet, mind...

Oh, and that Madeline Bunting article is very good, just not sure who she means when she says "muscular liberals"... I have this strange image of Jeremy Paxman benchpressing.

I think it's pretty clear she's referring to the likes of Christopher Hitchens, David Aaronovitch, Norman Geras, etc.

I have a strange crush on paxo. Which is worse...

Hitchens? Muscular?

Pah. I could have him. I could probably stand my ground in a drinking contest, too. Fucking popinjay.

Hello 'Woolly' - nice piece. How's the flu?

So have you shared your shoe fetish with these nice people yet?

Wooly, this is especially for you.

*gasp* the full wrongness of paxo/portillo combo is, well, wrong. But also good.

Oh dear. I need help.

I want you to give us the inside scoop. As a journo, can you tell us if there is any basis in fact for that piece?

I hope not*. Paxo with nipple rings? Dearie me.

*actually have no idea. Mainly because I haven't been frequenting Westminster bars and snorting coke all afternoon. Well, it's good to have a week off.

So what's the bribe for, anyway?

I've found UFO sweets good bribes; at least it worked with me and some NMA fans I sold the only ticket to see them I've ever had outside the Marquee some aeons ago. Face price only, natch.

Anyone got any UFOs?

Oh yes, the Graun. The new size seems OK to me, but I rarely read the print version except at work (where I'm posting from now, in the spirit of the piece).

That is the possibly NSFW Paxman/Portillo slash of fame isn't it? Does Kamp*ner know them? Should I email it to him? Ah, questions, questions.

From that Bunting article- Change is something done to us; passivity sets in. So true.

Muscular liberals aren't so much a buff Paxo so much as middle class Mail readers in yellow- Scruples about the unsavoury rightwing company they are now uncomfortably lodged with - such as the American neocons - have been easily squashed. With curious macho posturing, they are "muscular" or "hard" liberals: enough is enough, we can no longer tolerate the intolerant, is the battle cry
Sounds uncomfortably familiar. Hook handed hatemongers anyone?

I consider myself a well 'ard woolly liberal- I smash the intolerant with my mighty fists of doom, but in a gentle way. I don't care what colour your skin or what gods you worship, you come round 'ere being intolerant I'll break yer legs. I hate all bigots, round 'em up and have 'em deported I say. Bastards.

I'm currently refusing to engage in political debate. Recent on-board arguments about libertarianism (which are STILL making me clench my fists at the very thought, which is making typing something of a beeyatch) have turned me temporarily Stalinist. And I'd hate to be arguing on the same side as Burchill.

Much as I dislike Hitchens, Aaronovitch and Geras I can't say I liked the Bunting article much. There is a good point in there about the macho posturing of these liberals which gets lost in the attack on reason, Enlightenment and universal values. I can't think of a bigger gift to the right than to surrender these values at a time when "reality based" is an slur and human rights only count if you are the right colour.

Anyway, and back to the thread, thanks for not doing a hatchet job on us woolly.
