Because it will be good for your soul.

Uhhh... evidently I was not clear that the dog has been dubbed Russell Jones. Also not clear was that Russell Jones = ODB. They were the same man - a man who, sadly, passed away last year.

Cool. Although if you shout 'Russell!' to call him in people might think you're trying to imitate a very loud paper bag. Full of dry leaves.

Beware of Nominative Determinism. Giving a dog a soppy name can make it soppy (etc).

It also makes your friends look like complete dicks when they do you a favour and dog-sit for a few days, and have to run after the disobediant little blighter in the park in front of loads of teenagers.

I reckon you should think of authors, thinkers, or other such heroes that you've respected over the years. I was always a little envious when my mate called his cat Chomsky. Another friend had a cat called Zola.

I think that will work as long as you call him ODB as often as you call him Russell. That way you can stand in a park and scream OOooooo Deeee BEEEEE! rather than Ruuuusuuuuulll...
Actually, ODB has something of the "come by!" to it. Perhaps you should try him with sheep.

Oops! Sorry for my last post. Right that's it; time for bed...

I'm telling you, "Ol' Doggy Bastard" is fucking destined to be the little guy's name.

Okay, same question. I just got my new puppy this morning (photos will follow when I can get some form of photographic contrivance up and running)- I'm kind of leaning towards "Moomin" at the moment (as suggested by TangoMango), but suggestions are welcome. (Toying with the idea of another Wu-Tang name, then various Barbeloids can all get puppies and we can form the whole Clan).

That's genius! So name him Gza.

Black with a white tummy, and a tail that curls right back in a circle. Seems to like pens.

I would have said Badger myself, but it's the name of punji steak's cat.

ah-ha, so you have a stationery-loving dog. Perhaps we could aim for a little corporate sponsorship - how about Ryman? Could possibly play the field a little, and see if Schwepps would be interested in a 'Whisky and Ryeman deal? Or how about a Bill Hicks tribute - Wryman??

Stoatie: I'm kind of leaning towards "Moomin" at the moment (as suggested by TangoMango)

Actually it was Ganesh in the Happy thread, but I do think it's a good name too (even if the puppy is female).

And there's still Matron as an option.

Ah yes, my mistake- sorry, Ganesh!

Matron's pretty cool- shouting "ooh Matron" in the park is ALWAYS going to be funny.

(BTW the woman at the local vet's, who gave me the puppy in the first place, rocks- just went up there to find out about feeding and stuff, and came bag with an enormous bag of food, toys, snacks, worming tablets, flea stuff, and all manner of assorted shit, all for the bargain price of Bugger All).

I always thought RZA was the best: Riiiiizzzaaaa! Yeah, that would work, two syllables, sounds like you're looking for skins.

Seems to like pens.

How about "Scribbler", or "Doodle", or "Artie" (too pretentious)?

Congratulations Stoatie. 'Tis a wonderful thing when a puppy finds a good home.

Scribble rather than scribbler - I like scribble - is nice.

This won't help you at all Stoatie but if I had two puppies I'd call them Chuck and Norris. Even if they were female. But then I find it a lot easier to name animals rather than people which is what I have to do in eight weeks time. The SO has already said definitely no to Genghis and absolutely NO to Clint. Presently I'm stumped...

you could call the wean Diomedes...

Mon Oncle Ignatius

Scribble(r) is good - Stoatie will know why I think so (think all-night garages and Big Jim Saldadblim And His Performing Vegetable Orchestra).

How about Rose (as in McDowell)?

Bic (as in pens)? Or Biro (as in Lazlo, of course)?

As she's b&W, how about Chia (as in -roscuro)?

Currently wondering whether Trogdor is too masculine...
