It's all White Wedding and Blondie. Actually I can only hear the incessant beats of House music and some traffic driving past now.

Ah, the eighties. I am still desirous of a fine mullet; however Lilly won't let me grow one. And what with being the person who does my hair, she gets the final say.

Evening all. Just popped in to say Loomis had a fine 30th party tonight and Barbelith was very well represented. I must sleep now.

Dunno about anyone else, but I've got the new New Order album, the last Nick Cave and Ute Lemper as my main listens for this evening. Oh, and maybe some Skinny Puppy later.

Duuuuudes!

Here's a tip before I disappear as per flippin' usual to do some work: check out The Onion AV club's archives (you can find it from www.theonion.com). I just finished reading an old one with Abel Ferrara, well worth a look if only for what he says about Jimmy Page. It's ace.

G'night y'all! Oh and Nina? Sounds to me like you were doing okay with Blondie.

How can I encourage people to actually have real, incisive conversations in Art, fashion and design?

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

It's a tricky one... well, it is for me, anyway, as I am a moron when it comes to any of the three titular subjects.

I dunno. I think the high culture/low culture split is (like you said in the wiki) a real problem - low culture threads get pilloried on the high culture cross, (you pillory things on crosses, right?) and high culture threads end up sounding like shadow zone head shop.

I always think people aren't inclined because it's so visual and that's difficult to express in words. But it's been a bit more pacey and interesting there and I'd love that to continue.

Tryphena Absent
01:57 / 10.04.05
Also the split can be bridged, but it takes a helluva a lot of attention to do it and people get a bit nervous about replying I think.

We could try annotation stuff. Like - somebody posts a picture and we write about it? The New York Times had this really cool piece a couple of months ago 'close-reading' a painting and it made me think better about the art crit field.

Tryphena Absent
02:04 / 10.04.05
Which picture would you choose?

iconoplast
02:06 / 10.04.05
Well, in my dash through the Tate Modern's 'Modern Art in 15 minutes or less', I did manage to write down the name 'Legere', though I don't remembere what piece it was of his I liked.

...I'll see if I can find it.

iconoplast
02:10 / 10.04.05
Aha.

It's Léger, no final e. And it's 'Still Life with a Beer Mug'.

Tryphena Absent

I think that would be great! If you could start it... maybe with some rules if there are any you can think of that you want to be observed. It would be a great project... we could have a new painting once a month or fortnightly or something. How do you feel about that?

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
02:17 / 10.04.05
Yeah, it'd be kind of like the Book Club threads only for art... and when they're working, they increase debate in Books no end.

iconoplast
02:33 / 10.04.05
Well, thing is - it feels harder to write about art than about books. Though, come to think of it, the Music Forum doesn't seem to mind.

Hi folks!

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
02:39 / 10.04.05
Yo.

I think the thing with music is that people (well, people I know, anyway) tend to talk a lot about music in normal real life, which makes it easier.

Tryphena Absent
02:40 / 10.04.05
I think it's a bit difficult at first but the more you do it the easier it gets. People who write about the art in comics probably find it easier to start with because at least they're used to critiquing something that you look at, it just doesn't have the added benefit of a definite narrative.

The one thing that Art History courses are undoubtedly good for is learning where to start talking about art. They just teach you what to look for and from there you kinda start working it out.

You think maybe some art's easier to talk about?

Stoatie - how long you still have to wait?

Tryphena Absent

I think that Leger painting will be a good starting point. We can talk about the colour and the perspective. I feel positive and cheery! Have a flower for your thought!

I really should go to sleep now...

Why thank you. Glad to help. And, uh... anything you can tell me about the color and perspective in that painting, or, you know - who Leger was, what he was into and about... share with those of us who've never taken an Art class.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Well, technically we finish at 7 (in about 2 1/4 hours) but on a Sunday we rarely get out before eight, depending how much stuff's in the papers (it's all the supplements and magazines, y'see).

Not sure if it's more "difficult" to talk about, just that people aren't as used to talking about it. That said, it's not really my best subject, so I could just be talking about me, rather than people in general.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
02:55 / 10.04.05
Keggers? You still about?

(Just walked past Mr Brigade's desk... he seems busy. Whereas right now I've got fuck all to do. And it's really boring.)

Tryphena Absent
02:56 / 10.04.05
Well hey, start the thread with just the picture, what you like about it and mention that it's a thread for annotation and we'll get cracking. There's quite a lot about fernand Leger if you stick his name in to google.

night all!
