I actually enjoyed the pacing of the reveals, this issue. I loved that the Chinese X-Men, as they're referred to, actually bothered to shut themselves away for a bit and think about what they should do, rather than just bust out superheroy and start kicking things and hitting them with eyeblasts. And Beast's sex life, if only because it's not as positively mundane as showing essentially the same Scott/Emma scene again and again and it was the only part with reasonable emotional vitality.

New stuff needs to start coming in by next issue, though, or there's no way I can stick with this on an issue by issue basis. Or, possibly, a tpb basis.

Scott/Emma are the new Scott/Jean. She might be more vicious than Jean in theory, but they are soooo boring now.

Honestly, I wish we could fast-forward to the hypothetical X-Men that Hisako leads, as hinted at in an old Runaways flash-forward.

But wouldn't Hisako end up just settling down when she hit her thirties, like Scott has?

Your war, Papers, seems to be with so-called conventional sexual mores in general, rather than anything that's particularly going on in the X-Men.

I had decided to wait for the trade on this, but GHOST BOXES inrigues (the 2 issue mini) and I LOVED the dps of the Chinese mutant-heaven-whatnot city. I enjoyed the issue more than the prior ones (although Fraction and Brubaker's UX is much more fun in terms of wit and character beats).

I don't know, Ginny, I'm more interested in seeing some maybe brand-new X-Men with the possibility that Hisako -- a genuinely new character for the franchise -- will maybe do something beyond acting out the Kitty Pryde as a teenager role. And Cyclops has always been a bit boring, which works in some ways -- odd couple moments with Logan, for example -- but at the moment his relationship with Emma has started to limited her characterization and doesn't really play into the X-melodrama much anymore. We have high hopes for Brand and Beast, but when she's a tertiary character who's only sometimes involved with the story (see: Trish Tilby), it limits the drama potential.

I suppose if Agent Brand, Beast and Emma Frost had a sauna after a few tequilas, while Scott Summers looked on, blankly, through his cycloptic eye, from behind a screen, then it might send the X-franchise off in a new direction.

Oh, for the good old days, when we could count on Ellis to put our heroes in embarassing sexual situations like that.

Not sure if this is the place for it, or whether it should go with the Casanova/Matt Fraction thread, but I'll ask the question anyway - anyone been picking up Uncanny X-Men recently?

It has to be a hell of pull to get me interested in a book like this, but I gave it a try, mainly because of the Fraction/Brubaker writing team. I found it quite difficult to stomach the Greg Land art, but quite liked the new direction. But with the last issue the Dodsons came on board, and it's started looking pretty good too.

Anyone else reading it?

So, we're just through twenty-eight on this, right? I find I am actually interested in at least this storyline closing up, now that the wheel-spinning feeling has (temporarily?) ceased.

And, to answer, Anyone else reading it? in regards to the Brubaker/Fraction Uncanny, I eventually caught up on Brubaker's solo run, but bailed quickly on the joint effort. I believe it was the bit where the young white fellow sits down to explain to his colleagues and longtime friends (Vietnamese and Native American) voting discrimination and racial politics, while they smile and nod, possibly in pseudo-relevant cultural attire (I'm sure Dani has a choker and maybe some feather action).

Ellis' run illustrated by Bianchi bored me to tears and didn't really open with a strong first or second issue. Although it's kinda cool that Forge showed up and, I dunno, did some stuff.

However, maybe the new story arc (I was wondering if this book was still going to even be published) by Ellis with art by Phil Jimenez will breathe some life into ASTONISHING. Although the Fraction/Brubaker stuff seems okay and seems to please X-Fans, I can only say 'hurm, seems slightly fun but I can't really be bothered too much.' X-Men in San Fran. is a clever idea, though. They're about to bring back Magneto ... yawn.
