Hasn't it already been established that Joss Whedon is planing on extending his run on AXM?

Nope, it hasn't been established that Whedon will be doing more than a year of AXM. Though I personally suspect that he will be sticking around (it's not like he's got tv shows to work on right now). That and the latest issue of Wizard Magazine (yeah, yeah, WM is like the Entertainment Weekly of Comics, I know; but it's a guilty pleasure cause it's a light read) had a blurb on House of M, the crossover mini-series starring the AXM crew and the Avengers. Anyway, WM provided excerpts of an interview between Capt American and Shield agent, Jessica Drew. In the interview, Capt reveals what he really thinks about the X-men. The interview except was actually written by Brian Michael Bendis. WM also provides a transcript of what Cyclops thinks about the Avengers, written by Whedon. Anyhow, I'm thinking that Whedon wouldn't have bothered with the House of M bit unless he had plans to extend his run on AXM.

Apologies if the above did not make much sense. I just woke up and had only one cup of coffee and now must dash off to work.

Unless he's got something REALLY IMPORTANT to be doing somewhere else, I can't think of a single way in which his NOT continuing with the title could possibly be a good idea.

The rumor I've heard is that Whedon will write for at least another year and that Cassaday will rotate story arcs with another very good artist... (the rumor did not name an alternate artist for Cassaday)...

and Whedon loves Bendis and his writing, incidentally, so that may have helped inspire the fun little Wizard piece.

It's not like Whedon has nothing going on - he just finished the Serenity movie and will be promoting that when it comes out, and he's been involved with the Wonder Woman movie.

Marvel has announced Giant Size X-Men #3 with a story by Whedon and art by Dave Cockrum for May, so all signs are pointing toward more Astonishing by Whedon. But, I also think it's pretty clear that it will be announced in Wizard before it's announced anywhere else.

1976...it reprinted the Roy Thomas/Neal Adams Sentinals story, and was my first X-Men comic. Then, when I bought X-Men 100, I spent the whole issue saying, "Who in the hell are these new guys, and why are the real x-men robots?"

Eh, I don't know if I care that he'll extend his run. I love the man's work in television, but the comic guy apparently forget to put AXM #7 in my box and I didn't even notice, I'm that bored with the book. Ahh well.

when Joe Quesada took over Newsarama for a week, he put up an AIM conversation with Kevin Smith. the two of them talked about this very issue:

KEVIN: How many issues is Buffy doing?
KEVIN: On Astonishing?
KEVIN: He brought back Shadowcat's little dragon.
KEVIN: I dug that.
JoeyDaQ Why do you call him Buffy?
KEVIN: Because I always forget his name.
JoeyDaQ Joss
JoeyDaQ He's doing twelve issues
KEVIN: Joss Whedon - yes.
KEVIN: Twelve, and then out?
JoeyDaQ that's the word on the street
JoeyDaQ Yeah, his run has been great
KEVIN: Who'll follow him?
JoeyDaQ No idea who or if anyone will follow
JoeyDaQ We may just end the title there
KEVIN: And that artist... so good.
JoeyDaQ Cassaday is the man
KEVIN: God, he's good.
KEVIN: So you'll just let the title die?
JoeyDaQ I'm crazy like that
KEVIN: I'll take it.
KEVIN: I can deliver an issue a decade.

it sounds like he's gone after #12 to me. he's got his plate full with the Serenity movie and other projects, as Flux mentioned.

what stories? i don't see much of anything that can't be resolved in the next four issues. there are a few new toys he'd be leaving behind, but that just strikes me as wanting to add to the X-mythos in his time here.

I agree, Diz. It's a fucking shame, but I think we have to face up to the fact that Whedon *might* not be around after issue 12.

I really hope he is, however.

Just to clarify, that Giant-Sized X-Men #3 will be mostly reprints of old, classic X-Men stories. The Whedon/Cockrum story will be a short story, only about 1/5 of the book itself (the rest will be all reprints).

Cockrum has been very ill for quite some time, I think - they recently did a small indie-press benefit sketch book for him, with various artists and writers doing sketches/writing pieces in tribute to Dave.

From MillarWorld Forums:

"The breaking news from WonderCon in San Francisco is this:

About 90 minutes ago at his Serenity panel, Whedon got Cassaday up on stage and the two of them publicly announced that they're doing a second year. The way they're going to do it is t take a break after the first twelve issues and then come back with the second year, and also what Whedon called Giant-Sized Astonishing X-Men Annual #1.

And the crowd went wild.

By the way - sidenote: Whedon, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau and Nathan Fillion then went on to do a very very entertaining panel mostly about Firefly/Serenity but also other Whedon projects. Serenity is looking very good."

Told you so neer neer ner neer neer etc.

This is great. I'm kind of sad it'll still only add up to four story arcs (failing a third year which doesn't seem too unlikely) unless Wedon kicks this decompressed bullshit into touch.

Too bad he won't be using Wolverine, I liked the idea of Logan's quiet mutant pride. Best new idea with that character in donkeys.

I never said he wouldn't stay, but I needed something more concrete than rumours and speculation before getting excited.

So then. Huzzah!!!!!!!! Huzzah!!!!!! Huzzah!!!!!!

I'm not finding Whedon's run particularly decompressed. Sure Whedon's taking his time, but each episode is pretty busy and usually involves an action scene (somthing more writers should be including, IMO). Unlike those kings of decompression, Bendis and Ellis, Whedon doesn't over use splash pages or waste (many) pages on cute tricks. He's also not a big fan of redundant dialogue, in that his dialogue rarely clogs up the plot, and doesn't populate his comics with talking heads.

For my money, Whedon is writing a good old fashioned serial. It could move faster, but I'm not sure it wouldn't lose something in the process.

Hopefully Marvel will get the nice hardback collection of teh first year before Joss + Cassaday start the second year.
I'm still holding out for the hard cover, almost bought the TPB last week but I remain resolute that the only way to enjoy this book properly is in a larger format. All at once.

Glad to hear he's sticking around for a second year. From Joe Q's talk on Newsarama last week it sounds like the big Marvel Event (House Of M) will come directly from the pages of New Avengers and Astonishing. Despite the fact that Claremont is writing the prequel in Excalibur.

Yeah. When I started reading AXM I got the must have collection of #1-3 with #4. An absolutely great way to read it, the individual issues just aren't long enough, esp. with all the delays on this one.

17:25 / 20.02.05
Not horribly. Issue 6 was release in December instead of November, and issue 7 in February instead of January. So it's been livable, especially considering the alternative. Look at New X; months of delay at times for inconsistent art. At least in the beginning. Astonishing has thankfully maintained a singular artistic vision, with minor delays.

Matthew Fluxington
19:10 / 20.02.05
It's been monthly except for the skip month gap between storylines. (It should be noted that normally there should be 13 issues in a year, but Joss/John were only signed to 12, and Marvel no longer does annuals.)

Anyone with magic transcripty fingers want to bung up the Captain America and Scott Summers dialogues?

Ask and ye shall receive. Take note though, spoiler virgins - the transcript between Capt America and Jessica Drew has a spoiler for the Phoenix: Endsong mini-series and for Whedon’s first year of Astonishing X-men (no major specifics, but it does reveal the state of Scott & Emma’s relationship).

[Blurb from Wizard Magazine]:

They don’t have a lot in common. On one side there are Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers, a sometimes government-sponsored group who aren’t used to losing and even less used to being controversial. Then there are the X-Men, an ambiguous mutant team, feared and hated by a world they hope to protect, who fight for a dream even they must know is never going to become reality.

As Joss Whedon and artist John Cassaday’s 12-issue Astonishing X-Men run comes to a close in May, June sees Brian Michael Bendis launch House of M, and eight-issue biweekly mini-series with Olivier Coipel that sees the two teams trying to work out a way to deal with the Scarlet Witch’s increased and dangerous powers – the same powers that were behind the devastation seen in “Avengers Disassembled.”

With plans for the series to affect the Marvel Universe in Crisis-like proportions, Bendis gave us a glimpse at what Avengers leader Captain America thinks of the mutant team in a one-on-one S.H.I.E.L.D. interview with Agent Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, while Whedon provides Cyclops’ insights.

[Transcript of interview between Capt America & Special Agent, Jessica Drew]:

S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Drew: Thanks for doing this, Cap.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: Not exactly sure what…

S.A.D : The higher-ups just wanted your point of view on a few mutant-related things.

C.A. : Is this because of all the recent…?

S.A.D. :Yes.

C.A. : I don’t know anything they don’t know.

S.A.D. : I know. It’s not an interrogation. It’s just your opinion on stuff. Just want to know what you think about a few things.

C.A. : The X-Men?

S.A.D. : Actually, yes.
C.A. : What do you want to know?

S.A.D. : What’s your impression of them as individuals? Scott Summers, for instance. Codename Cyclops.

C.A. : Seems like a decent enough guy. I sometimes wonder if he…is a true leader.

S.A.D. : What do you mean?

C.A. : Sometimes I get the impression that he doesn’t want to lead so much as he’s the only one qualified and just does it because he thinks he has to…or that no one else can. Either way, I’ve met Xavier, his teacher, many times, and I think of all the students Xavier has had over the years…I think Scott Summers is probably the one Xavier is most proud of.

S.A.D. : Doesn’t seem to have the best track-record with women.

C.A. : Don’t know what you mean.

S.A.D. : Intel says that he and Emma Frost are an item now.

C.A. : I didn’t know that.

S.A.D. : Yes.

C.A. : That’s the one that used to be in the Hellfire Club?

S.A.D. : Yes.

C.A. : Well, I hope she stays on the straight and narrow, that’s all I have to say. I hope she becomes the exception to the rule. But they say she gave up her life of power to teach children and spread a pro-mutant message, so we have to give her the benefit of the doubt. And as far as Summers’ track record with women…I hardly should talk.

S.A.D. : Kitty Pryde.

C.A. : The one that can walk through walls? She came back to the X-Men?

S.A.D. : As a teacher.

C.A.: That’s wonderful. You have to admire that in a huge way. I’m sure Xavier’s immensely proud of her. I met her a couple of times. She was just a teenager. But a good manner about her.

S.A.D. : Hank McCoy.

C.A. : I love Hank. He’s a brother.

S.A.D. : He was an Avenger.

C.A. : The sadness…sometimes the sadness that comes off that man…it’s heartbreaking.

S.A.D. : He did used to seem a lot happier.

C.A. : That was all an act. When he hit his secondary…secondary mutation? Is that what they’re calling it?

S.A.D. : Yes.

C.A. : When he first…

S.A.D. : Turned blue.

C.A. : It was devastating to him. It changed his life in every way. And I love that man for making the most of it and finding the sunny side of it…but I know he hurts inside. And I know he took the day with Wanda very hard. Very, very hard. He isn’t over it yet.

S.A.D. : Anything you want to say about Logan?

C.A. : Not on record.

S.A.D. : HA!

C.A. : Sorry. I’m just…he tries to get a rise out of me, and I’m man enough to take it. But just the fact that he tries to get a rise out of me gets a rise out of me.

S.A.D. : Next subject?

C.A. : Thank you.

S.A.D. : What – and this is a little off topic – what do you think are the biggest challenges the Avengers have to deal with? The New Avengers…what are the new big challenges?

C.A. : Um, huh. Well, clearly, to keep the name of the Avengers alive. The legacy of it.

S.A.D. : Sure.

C.A. : But something Hawkeye said before he died…he said that we as a team always kept moving forward without looking back. That we only dealt with whatever was right in front of us, and we never followed through on things. I think, obviously, he was right. If we had opened our eyes more, more Avengers would be alive today.

S.A.D. : You’re talking about Wanda Maximoff.

C.A. : I am.

S.A.D. : You think that the Scarlet Witch’s breakdown could have been avoided if more of you had kept a closer eye on things?

C.A. : Of course I do.

S.A.D. : Do you blame yourself?

C.A. : I didn’t think we were going to go here with this.

S.A.D. : Actually, you brought it here. But it is mutant related; Wanda was/is a mutant.

C.A. : Are we done?

S.A.D. : Oh, uh…

C.A. : I’m done.

S.A.D. : Oh, okay. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.

C.A. : Don’t worry about it.

[End transcript].

Cyclops doesn’t have an interview. His thoughts on the New Avengers are more along the line of a diary or war journal. In Wizard Magazine, there’s a pic of each New Avenger and beside it are Cyclops thoughts on said member.

Spider-Man: “I like this guy. He takes a lot of heat. I’m glad he’s finally got himself a team to take some of the heat for him. And maybe that team will take a little bit of the heat off of us. The Avengers have always been perfect, and we’ve always been seen as evil. Maybe this will give the people someone else to hate for five minutes. People may keep hating Spider-Man, but at least he won’t be hated alone anymore, I know it sounds mercenary, but damn it, I’ve got my own team to worry about.”

Captain America: “It’s oddly hard for me to trust this guy. He’s never given me a reason not to, but he wears that flag so brightly and we’ve had so much trouble from that government that I can’t help but feel he’s a little naïve about what’s been going on around here. Even Nick fury, for all his bluster and nastiness, sees the underbelly of this country and this world. I get the feeling that Cap doesn’t. I could be wrong, but it’s that outfit.”

Iron Man: “The way I understand it, there’s just a guy in there, which means I look at him and I’m looking at a tank – a guy with a very powerful weapon. And humans with powerful weapons – again, I have a trust issue. No one sees my eyes and no one sees Iron Man at all – there may be a kindred spirit in there and I hope so because if there’s ever been a superhero who looked a lot like a Sentinel, it’s Iron Man.”

Spider-Woman: “Don’t know her, but she doesn’t sound all that original.”

Luke Cage: “I like Luke Cage, but I have the feeling he still thinks I’m a wuss. Maybe that’s just a middle class white guy thing, but I think Luke would take one look at me and probably not want to party. I’m a big nerd, and I think he sees it.”

Wolverine: “I have to say Wolverine is spreading himself a little thin. As long as he’s there for us, I’m happy for him and his hobbies. Personally, I wish he’d take up macramé. Hank used to be an Avenger and that was a great thing for him. And Wolverine can always use more friends because he’s going to lose them at some point.”

The Sentry: “Not a clue on this guy. Is he a friend of Spider-Woman? I wish him well.”

As for Whedon & Cassaday staying on for another year...woot! Happiness!(Does Numfar dance of joy)

I can't say I haven't had a flick through some of the issues but since I made the decision to only get the hardcover every time I've looked at an issue it's strengthened my resolve that singular issues of this series just aren't worth wasting my money on.

This series begs to be collected and printed in a larger format to show off the beautiful artwork. The stories need that cohesion as well.

It also allows me to take this series on it's own merits as a complete story, as I do with GM's run. Someone else's version of the X-men and not part of a serialised soap opera.
