Anyone with magic transcripty fingers want to bung up the Captain America and Scott Summers dialogues?
Ask and ye shall receive. Take note though, spoiler virgins - the transcript between Capt America and Jessica Drew has a spoiler for the Phoenix: Endsong mini-series and for Whedon’s first year of Astonishing X-men (no major specifics, but it does reveal the state of Scott & Emma’s relationship).
[Blurb from Wizard Magazine]:
They don’t have a lot in common. On one side there are Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers, a sometimes government-sponsored group who aren’t used to losing and even less used to being controversial. Then there are the X-Men, an ambiguous mutant team, feared and hated by a world they hope to protect, who fight for a dream even they must know is never going to become reality.
As Joss Whedon and artist John Cassaday’s 12-issue Astonishing X-Men run comes to a close in May, June sees Brian Michael Bendis launch House of M, and eight-issue biweekly mini-series with Olivier Coipel that sees the two teams trying to work out a way to deal with the Scarlet Witch’s increased and dangerous powers – the same powers that were behind the devastation seen in “Avengers Disassembled.”
With plans for the series to affect the Marvel Universe in Crisis-like proportions, Bendis gave us a glimpse at what Avengers leader Captain America thinks of the mutant team in a one-on-one S.H.I.E.L.D. interview with Agent Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, while Whedon provides Cyclops’ insights.
[Transcript of interview between Capt America & Special Agent, Jessica Drew]:
S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Drew: Thanks for doing this, Cap.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: Not exactly sure what…
S.A.D : The higher-ups just wanted your point of view on a few mutant-related things.
C.A. : Is this because of all the recent…?
S.A.D. :Yes.
C.A. : I don’t know anything they don’t know.
S.A.D. : I know. It’s not an interrogation. It’s just your opinion on stuff. Just want to know what you think about a few things.
C.A. : The X-Men?
S.A.D. : Actually, yes.
C.A. : What do you want to know?
S.A.D. : What’s your impression of them as individuals? Scott Summers, for instance. Codename Cyclops.
C.A. : Seems like a decent enough guy. I sometimes wonder if he…is a true leader.
S.A.D. : What do you mean?
C.A. : Sometimes I get the impression that he doesn’t want to lead so much as he’s the only one qualified and just does it because he thinks he has to…or that no one else can. Either way, I’ve met Xavier, his teacher, many times, and I think of all the students Xavier has had over the years…I think Scott Summers is probably the one Xavier is most proud of.
S.A.D. : Doesn’t seem to have the best track-record with women.
C.A. : Don’t know what you mean.
S.A.D. : Intel says that he and Emma Frost are an item now.
C.A. : I didn’t know that.
S.A.D. : Yes.
C.A. : That’s the one that used to be in the Hellfire Club?
S.A.D. : Yes.
C.A. : Well, I hope she stays on the straight and narrow, that’s all I have to say. I hope she becomes the exception to the rule. But they say she gave up her life of power to teach children and spread a pro-mutant message, so we have to give her the benefit of the doubt. And as far as Summers’ track record with women…I hardly should talk.
S.A.D. : Kitty Pryde.
C.A. : The one that can walk through walls? She came back to the X-Men?
S.A.D. : As a teacher.
C.A.: That’s wonderful. You have to admire that in a huge way. I’m sure Xavier’s immensely proud of her. I met her a couple of times. She was just a teenager. But a good manner about her.
S.A.D. : Hank McCoy.
C.A. : I love Hank. He’s a brother.
S.A.D. : He was an Avenger.
C.A. : The sadness…sometimes the sadness that comes off that man…it’s heartbreaking.
S.A.D. : He did used to seem a lot happier.
C.A. : That was all an act. When he hit his secondary…secondary mutation? Is that what they’re calling it?
S.A.D. : Yes.
C.A. : When he first…
S.A.D. : Turned blue.
C.A. : It was devastating to him. It changed his life in every way. And I love that man for making the most of it and finding the sunny side of it…but I know he hurts inside. And I know he took the day with Wanda very hard. Very, very hard. He isn’t over it yet.
S.A.D. : Anything you want to say about Logan?
C.A. : Not on record.
S.A.D. : HA!
C.A. : Sorry. I’m just…he tries to get a rise out of me, and I’m man enough to take it. But just the fact that he tries to get a rise out of me gets a rise out of me.
S.A.D. : Next subject?
C.A. : Thank you.
S.A.D. : What – and this is a little off topic – what do you think are the biggest challenges the Avengers have to deal with? The New Avengers…what are the new big challenges?
C.A. : Um, huh. Well, clearly, to keep the name of the Avengers alive. The legacy of it.
S.A.D. : Sure.
C.A. : But something Hawkeye said before he died…he said that we as a team always kept moving forward without looking back. That we only dealt with whatever was right in front of us, and we never followed through on things. I think, obviously, he was right. If we had opened our eyes more, more Avengers would be alive today.
S.A.D. : You’re talking about Wanda Maximoff.
C.A. : I am.
S.A.D. : You think that the Scarlet Witch’s breakdown could have been avoided if more of you had kept a closer eye on things?
C.A. : Of course I do.
S.A.D. : Do you blame yourself?
C.A. : I didn’t think we were going to go here with this.
S.A.D. : Actually, you brought it here. But it is mutant related; Wanda was/is a mutant.
C.A. : Are we done?
S.A.D. : Oh, uh…
C.A. : I’m done.
S.A.D. : Oh, okay. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.
C.A. : Don’t worry about it.
[End transcript].
Cyclops doesn’t have an interview. His thoughts on the New Avengers are more along the line of a diary or war journal. In Wizard Magazine, there’s a pic of each New Avenger and beside it are Cyclops thoughts on said member.
Spider-Man: “I like this guy. He takes a lot of heat. I’m glad he’s finally got himself a team to take some of the heat for him. And maybe that team will take a little bit of the heat off of us. The Avengers have always been perfect, and we’ve always been seen as evil. Maybe this will give the people someone else to hate for five minutes. People may keep hating Spider-Man, but at least he won’t be hated alone anymore, I know it sounds mercenary, but damn it, I’ve got my own team to worry about.”
Captain America: “It’s oddly hard for me to trust this guy. He’s never given me a reason not to, but he wears that flag so brightly and we’ve had so much trouble from that government that I can’t help but feel he’s a little naïve about what’s been going on around here. Even Nick fury, for all his bluster and nastiness, sees the underbelly of this country and this world. I get the feeling that Cap doesn’t. I could be wrong, but it’s that outfit.”
Iron Man: “The way I understand it, there’s just a guy in there, which means I look at him and I’m looking at a tank – a guy with a very powerful weapon. And humans with powerful weapons – again, I have a trust issue. No one sees my eyes and no one sees Iron Man at all – there may be a kindred spirit in there and I hope so because if there’s ever been a superhero who looked a lot like a Sentinel, it’s Iron Man.”
Spider-Woman: “Don’t know her, but she doesn’t sound all that original.”
Luke Cage: “I like Luke Cage, but I have the feeling he still thinks I’m a wuss. Maybe that’s just a middle class white guy thing, but I think Luke would take one look at me and probably not want to party. I’m a big nerd, and I think he sees it.”
Wolverine: “I have to say Wolverine is spreading himself a little thin. As long as he’s there for us, I’m happy for him and his hobbies. Personally, I wish he’d take up macramé. Hank used to be an Avenger and that was a great thing for him. And Wolverine can always use more friends because he’s going to lose them at some point.”
The Sentry: “Not a clue on this guy. Is he a friend of Spider-Woman? I wish him well.”
As for Whedon & Cassaday staying on for another year...woot! Happiness!(Does Numfar dance of joy) |
