So who's still reading?
I started picking up the series when they added Supergirl (a good jumping-on point, because I was living on the cheap when the earlier issues came out and had to pass them up; still haven't gotten around to snagging the trades yet). It's been pretty consistantly good superhero comics and usually leaves me with a smile on my face, but it's nothing phenomenal.
Issue #22, however, is the BEE'S KNEES.
There's a thread on the Film/TV forum called "TV Shows You've Never Seen (and what do you think they're about?)" yeah? Well, before I started reading Legion, I thought it could be summed up as "A bunch of idealistic kids work together and kind of fight futuristic villainy, but are really more concerned with dating each other and working through their awkward teenage years...IN SPACE!" And this issue is EXACTLY that.
Everybody's jealous of everybody else, and none of their problems are all that serious (well, I guess Sun Boy's is), but they're all totally worked up about them. It's fantastic. And there's some nice ambiguity as well (Does Karate Kid punch Ultra Boy because he's jealous and looking to take out some frustration or because that's really part of the training? Is Invisible Kid making up the stuff about Supergirl's EM field, basically saying "Stay away from my girl" while using the phrase "your basic Newtonian forces"?)
Everything I wanted out of the Legion comic. Makes one look back on one's own teenage years and smile on how important it all seemed at the time. Plus, the angsty (but light-hearted) teen romance is playing better than the anti-Establishment tone, which seems really forced when coming out of Waid. "Careful Gramps! You might break a hip!" and all that.
Plus, Invisible Kid looks just like I did when I was 16, but with a cooler jacket. |
