Oh wow, such an exciting issue. The big reveals with Shrinking Violet and Sensor Girl were especially inspired.

Best superhero comic on the market, virtually without competition.

So Princess Projectra was evil in the old versions, right?

SiliconDream
12:56 / 01.12.05
No, Projectra was always a good girl. Or good snake, in the reboot version.

I haven't bought this in a few months so I'm going to have a good time when I get back from the comic shop.

I haven't been reading the new series.. Read the first couple and didn't really love it, so deemed it droppable. Reading this thread gets me sort of interested again, but What's really got me thinking about the Legion is going through my back issues and reading the Levitz/Giffen run of the Baxter series- holy crap that stuff was great. Their original run was good too, but their reuniting a few years later was almost better, as it kind of bridges the gap between that old-school legion mentality and the sort of post-modern self-reflexive reboot stuff where you have people retelling these same stories over and over.
Maybe that doesn't make sense. It just seems as if they were at the perfect point then- there had been loads of history to comment on and mine, but it still seemed fresh enough to keep going. Plus, I really liked the design sense Giffen had going on at the time.

Of course, right after that they did the 5 year gap stuff (which I loved as well), which basically led directly to the various reboots. etc etc.

"Supergirl changes, Legion stays the same."

Stays the same except for that title SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPERHEROES, which kinda suggests that the LSH will have some status quo changes. I'm not sure how I feel about this: I love LSH and have been ambivalent at best about the new Kara character. Was this always part of Waid's plan, or is it a marketing driven decision (LSH is supposed to be in development as a cartoon, and if that show features Supergirl for brand recognition, then the comic seems slightly suspect. Still, Waid knows what he is doing thus far. It's a great book.

Snark alert: that first sentance in the post above seems snarky with hindsight and that is not as intended...

Matthew Fluxington
21:29 / 03.12.05
Well, in fairness, it's not an arbitrary thing. Supergirl is a pretty major character in Legion history, and Brainiac 5 needs a new girlfriend.

Matthew Fluxington
21:31 / 03.12.05
Keep in mind that Laurel Gand/Andromeda was always meant to be Supergirl.

Mark Parsons
21:54 / 03.12.05
Ah, it begins to make sense now! I thought they were substituting her for Pre-Crisis Superboy in yet another reboot thingamajig...

So Rucka writes the regular Supergirl ongoing, while LoSH changes it's title, perhaps for a short while. This was Waid & Kitson's plan all along, so it's not an IC related editorial mandate.

Matthew Fluxington

No.

Supergirl becomes Supergirl & The Legion of Super Heroes, and Legion of Super Heroes DOES NOT CHANGE.

Dan DiDio's words:

Greg Rucka on Supergirl: “Greg Rucka joins Ian Churchill on Supergirl, ‘One Year Later’. What can I say, Greg loves strong women.

...

"Not sure how things can change One Year Later when the stories are taking place thousands of years in the future, but the future is about to get more exciting in the newly titled Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes. And no, that is not a typo, wide awake now.

Rucka = Supergirl (yawn)

Waid & Kitson on a retitled LoSH.

Curse you Matthew Fluxington for forcing me to use Newsarama's search function! My moits bits are all raw and bleeding now...

No, once again:

Supergirl becomes Supergirl & The Legion of Super Heroes. It is by Greg Rucka and Ian Churchill.

Legion of Super Heroes DOES NOT CHANGE. It is by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson.

Where did you find this info?

Rucka did a Supergirl interview on Rama in which the LoSH is not mentioned, and Kitson posted on Legionworld forum that the LoSH series' title may change for a short while..or not.

If things are as you understand them Matthew (it would be interesting having 2 LoSH books), they creators are being quite cagey about it...

Another track: I'm finally reading the Great Darkness Saga and am liking it very much. The new run seems to keep much of the same spirit. Any suggestions as to other classic series runs from the 1980s and 90s?

I remember liking a reboot wherein Giffen drew in his sooper-raw style and everything seemed all post-apocalyptic. It was cool, but hard for a newbie to follow. I am assuming that this is "Five Years Later." What was that all about and how did it all shake out?

Not a reboot, just a new direction (of which Legion, like any long running title, has had several). Legion's only been rebooted twice...once in Zero Hour, once recently.

Where did I find the info? Right there. It's called BASIC READING COMPREHENSION!

Matthew Fluxington
17:13 / 06.12.05
Well, also, Legion isn't being cancelled and neither is Supergirl. It's not that hard to follow. They are announcing that Rucka's Supergirl is being retitled Supergirl & The Legion of Super Heroes. They never at any point in the news announcement say a word about Mark Waid's Legion of Super Heroes.

Not that I care terribly, but I had been under the (possibly entirely self-devised) impression LOSH was being retitled, not Supergirl. It seems more comprehensible to me that there'd be two Supergirl books rather than two Legion?

Mark Parsons
20:58 / 06.12.05
Clearly you lack BASIC READING COMPREHENSION.

Please pass the salt.

ZF!

I thought this was all a bit ambiguous at the time, which is why I posted the question.

I would be happier that there be two LOSH titles rather than two Supergirl titles.
I suppose OYL later will have Kara lost in the future, eventually coming into contact with LOSH, join them for a x-over or two (with name change), before being transported back to her present. As per usual. I think I'd be happier if this were a permanent change though

Anyway, since that Supergirl is so hawt right now, this should hopefully bring some new readers to LOSH, which would be good. Although the book is doing quite well it could always do better. IMHO it should be at least in the Top 30.

Still can't see where my reader comprehension is failing. I'll feel dreadfully silly when this is pointed out.

Mm, upon re-reading the
press release
, it does sound more like LOSH will change it's title, as the entries we are concerned about are seperate and seem unrelated.

We need someone on the inside. Or is Matthew our man on the inside? :-)

Ah well I suppose we'll have to wait and see, huh?

Mark Parsons

My eyes seem just fine, but I do admittedly suffer from basic waiting comprehension.

Anybody have any new info on the LoSH cartoon?

Just read the latest issue - it is a great series, shrinking violet/atom girls change from shy girl to hard girl was great, and the two boys taking on the thousands of baddies was superb. I'm really enjoying how much fun this book is.

As it turns out, the solicts show that Rucka will be on Supergirl, and Waid & Kitson will be on Supergirl and the Legion.

SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF THE SUPER-HEROES #16

Art and cover by Barry Kitson & Mick Gray
It’s 1,001 years later…and guess who’s joining the Legion of Super-Heroes? It’s just what you think…and nothing you expect!
On sale March 22 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

I kinda figured this is the way it would work out after seeing the cover of Legion #15 and the comment in the solicit copy about them defending the multiverse or whatever. I'm not sure how they'll pull off the 1,001 years later schtick, but I have confidence in Waid...

I was just thinking, early in the Waid/Kiston run, Dream Girl said to Brainy 'you feel different when we're married.' I figured that was her precog futuresense working...but now that she's dead, it appears to have been idle flirting...unless she comes back to life (romantic triangle with Supergirl, her and Brainy if so?). I wonder if she'll really stay dead.

Maybe DC will copy Marvel and do a Zombie Dream Girl.

Rich Johnston in this week's Lying in the Gutters:

>> Okay, okay, so ... the Legion may be government stooges and all a dream of Supergirl anyway, but ....

[he goes on to write a bit about Batman appearing with a teddy bear in his utility belt in this week's DC comics, but what is this weird speculation about Supergirl??]

DC wouldn't make the great new Mark Waid series "all just a dream"...would they...? I seriously doubt it.

You know, he did spoilertext that out.
