1912 Farnsworth-Miller Ruleset. No Victoria shunts, please.

Goldhawk Road

...hang on, wasn't the 1912 Fransworth-Miller Ruleset declared illegal for sessions where participants are not in the same physical location by the National Ruleset Conference in 1973? I say we adopt the 1949 EuroSet. Much more accessible to the novice player, too.

grant
01:05 / 30.08.04
Well, given that we'd then have to retitle the thread, I think we should just stick to an adapted Farnsworth-Miller. After all, the technology has come a long way since 1973.

Traditional opening:

Euston Station hmmmm? Just what are you up to?
I shall go for a rather cautious

Caution? Hah! I throw caution to the wind and play

Green Park

gah - i fucking hate green park with its miles of subway

Chancery Lane

Chancery Lane from Green Park! Unconventional sleaze, unconventional indeed. I don't know whether to be in awe of your ability to play the game or a bit miffed that it's so difficult for me now. I'm in a rather tight spot so I'll play...

Bank

.. I know, I know - sorry everyone - it's boring, but c'mon! I had limited choices! Blame Sleazenation's previous move!

Grey Area
08:18 / 31.08.04
Well, your move does throw up the interesting possibilities inherent in Aldgate East.

Btw, are we allowing the use of the DLR? Because that opens up totally new strategies, as well as the popular 'round of whiskey when you land on Cutty Sark' convention.

Green Park, on a blue-to-blue triple color advance.

...which, to prevent nid, leaves me only

Hmm...I think the Kovacs Rebound manoever is called for here, placing the game firmly on Bond Street. Via Brixton.

Well, I first learnt this game whilst balanced on the knee of my dear grandfather, who was at one time one of England's foremost potato moguls, and keen player of the game. So, in the memory of dear old grandfather Tez, I shall have to go for

Wembley Central

20:42 / 01.09.04
Wait -- how can you get to Wembley from Vauxhall? Shouldn't that be Canada Water or... what is it... Greenwich?

Now, this is going to mess up my strategy, but I'm going to let it go for now. We should, however, really clarify this before going any further.

Just to keep things in motion, I'm going to Greenford for a rail transit loop.

I wouldn't worry about it, grant, as I believe that Ealing Broadway makes it a moot point. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Old chap, I think you'll find that you've just performed a Victoria shunt (via Euston). Which are not allowed in this particular session. Terribly sorry.

Tezcatlipoca
09:31 / 02.09.04
Ah, but the Victoria shunt - as we all know - relates to the Farnsworth-Millar ruleset, and, by your own request, we part shifted to the 1949 EuroSet (resulting in the amended Farnsworth-Miller ruleset stated by grant), making such a move once more legal.

We really do have to adhere to these rules, Grey Area, otherwise this game would be nothing more than a group of people listing random tube stations until somebody just said 'Mornington Crescent'. I mean, really.

Would you care to start us off with another round, however?

Grey Area
10:39 / 02.09.04
In the interests of sportsmanship, I will withdraw my complaint and indeed start a new round. Using the 1912 Farnsworth-Miller Ruleset, modified to accomodate participants not in the same physical location. Is everyone clear on that? The 1912 version of the set of rules established by the seminal Farnsworth and Miller, adapted. All clear? Really? I'll check later on you know. Anyway, here's your starter for ten:

Whitechapel (would have used Shoreditch, but that's closed between 10:00 and 15:30)

Jack Vincennes
10:54 / 02.09.04
The District line? On a September Thursday? Your audacity astounds me, Grey Area.

Elephant & Castle.

Grey Area
11:54 / 02.09.04
Audacious? Why thank-you Vincennes...that's a very complimentary compliment.

If there is one weakness I have in this game, it's my fondness for the parallel crossover move: Picadilly Circus

GA -glad my comment was taken in the spirit it was intended. Jolly good!

Man, there are a lot of demi-shuffles in this game. I like it.

Vincennes my love. How can you leave it so open like that?

I give you...

Monument. Ha!

Ottoline, you clearly weren't paying attention. In your eagerness to outflank Vincennes, you have fallen into a very simple trap.

Leytonstone.

Hmmm...Mordant's game has vastly improved since we last played. The cunning swine has left us with little choice, so, forced as I am, I shall have to opt for

Hounslow Central

The Strobe
21:24 / 05.09.04
I had a conventional response to that move lined up, but then another dawned on me - and one I'd never willingly pass up the chance to play...

Given we're in 1912 rules (so dated, and yet charming in their quaintness), and I'm wearing a pair of odd socks within two weeks of my birthday, I play [fanfare please]

Aldwych

Now get out of that, as it were.

Storm interference, blowing in from the southeast to the northwest, traveling 4 mph & causing flooding along the... white, green&white and gray lines for me, puts me at London Bridge north to Bank.

Hmm, the seats on this one seem a bit damp. I hope nobody left a small child running around on their own.

Still as I'm now languishing at White City I think its time to call ALL CHANGE.

That should put paid to a certain someone's plan to capitlise on the signal failures at Euston.

Grey Area
14:56 / 09.09.04
Never mind who's in nid, where/what the hell is nid???

But anyway, I see that I can exploit a little-known loophole in the 1912 ruleset that allows me to play Brondesbury Park. Worm your way out of that.

All change?

Aw, hell -- I can't remember what's open to me next.
Unless somebody feels like helping out, I'm going to pass.

Signal failure at Euston, ALL CHANGE, a loophole Brondesbury from a nidded GA. I'll add a three-handed switchback and take home the turkey.

Once more unto the sweaty depths we go.

This time its Buxtons Basic with options 1, 3 and 4. Remember that Buxtons Basic is the official Mornington Crescent Game of the 2004 Olympics. We would have been there sooner but there were delays on the Circle Line.
