The Art was Great. Beautiful cover too (love the colors and all the fish!) I am totally sold on and convinced of the impossible concepts. Cam, good luck topping yourself after this.

Chubby's demise reminded me of the death scene in ADAPTATION (dir- Spike Jonze; w-Charlie (&Donald) Kaufman; starring Nic Cage), so I still believe Chubby is an imaginary friend or tulpa or somesuch. I was creeped out by the death rather than saddened, although the last page was a bit over-the-top for my tatses and left me a bit disengaged. I'm sure it'll work better in my own mind when all 3 issues are read in one go, though.

Loved the dreamy quality of this issue. It's like David Lynch got a sense of humour and decided to writ and draw comics.

Any news on SEAGUY vol.2?

>>>Ah Cameron, that's super helpful! Thanks. You must have a big printer<<<

Yeah, I invested in both an oversize printer and scanner, and while they cost a fucking fortune they've been two of the best purchases I've made.

Hey Cameron, nice work. Actually very good. I have to admit at first (circa Catwoman) I didn't like your work, I found it too cartoony very much like Disney cartoons but right now I love it, since it suits the mood of the story so well

Anyway, I'm a little confused right now. In issue 2 in the Atlantis double spread we see "the missing cruise" and Sea guy says it was attacked by the Xoo. That boat resembles the one attacked in issue 1 but in that issue it was attacked by giant ballon animals right? Or was it the Xoo in disguise?

On the chocolate sargasso I thougt it was the remainder of the chocolate they retieved from Antartica and was later melted by the sun.

Does the ending means Chubby da Choona=Sue Dibny? (just joking).

And now to the moon and anti-dad. I canĀ“t wait for number 3

>>>That boat resembles the one attacked in issue 1 but in that issue it was attacked by giant ballon animals right? Or was it the Xoo in disguise?<<<

Xoo is a shapeshifting substance, as we saw with the octopus at the beginning of issue 2...

And I'm glad you like my artwork now (even though I'll never understand what "too cartoony" means...sigh), I really do appreciate it! Thanks!

Cameron,
I loved Seaguy #2, and I was just wondering: have you or Grant seen and been influenced by John Patrick Shanley's "Joe Vs. The Volcano"? The moon, the sea, the preoccupation with courage--there are some major thematic links there... This is a good thing, by the way--I love that film!

Maybe when I get back to the studio (I'm at home now) I'll post a before-and-after comparison of my layout pencils to final inks.

that would be interesting to see.

I'm going to be the first on record to say "I don't know what 'da fug' this comic is about."

It's a beautiful comic, and fun to read, and that's what a great comic should be. A good story makes you care about the characters, and Seaguy and Chubby were instantly likable. The world these characters live in is wildly imaginative, but full of familiarity as well (the Mickey Eye cops are eerily on target).

However, I await the final installment before I offer my interpretation of the series as a whole.

But this is driving me crazy... Does anyone (for the love of Pete) have any idea what Morrison meant by naming the building in the opening page of Seaguy #1 "the Smart Man's Chicken"?

This is my favorite panel in the thing - love the jawline and the mask area, love the lines of it. The action burst behind him is tops.

I'm often a little confused by Peter Doherty's pallette choices - they're very muddy, which I imagine is a decision based on the feel of the piece, but it seems off to me...

It just occurred to me again that the next issue is the final one. Let's hear it for some Moon Mummies.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

It's a beautiful issue but I'm too emotionally wounded right now to commment further.

*wipes away tears*

C-c-chubby....

Ah, poor old Chubby. Nearly made me cry, that did. But I was feeling all manly after the football. So didn't.

And Seaguy's blond! Who'd a thunk it!

Guess he's got to go to the moon for the finale, uh?

And this being a George Morrison comic, presumably "everything Seaguy thought was true about his life will be turned upside down".

Maybe we're all in Chubby's dream. That would be nice.

Good work, Cameron.

I found this issue to be a compley different tone than the last one - much, much darker. Not only the death, but the stuff on the Xoo Industries boat etc. (and that was a great page, btw Cameron)

I wonder how it's all going to be tied up in one issue to be honest. Seems to be so many threads that you'd expect to be resolved - She Beard, the return of Chubby from the Dead, rescuing the kids in Mickey Eye Park maybe? I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Made me wonder is this the first of a range of Seaguyverse series? Maybe we'll have "The Adventures of She beard" next?

Well don't forget that this is technically only the end of Vol. 1. There's still 2 volumes - 6 more issues - to go, but we still haven't heard if they've been approved or not - it's all dependent on sales, of course. Best thing to do is make your retailer aware that there's demand for the book, so they will reorder, and maybe drop DC a line telling them how much you want more Seaguy....

What's DC's email addy?

CameronStewart
12:11 / 18.06.04
I'm not sure what the general email address is - askeditors@dccomics.com is the only one I could find, that's for their new online letter column thing. Still, at least that's one that will probably get read...

George Morrison

LOL!

And who knew there'd be this many "Chubby" jokes?

I have to go look up the definition of "sargasso," I have no idea what it means...

I second the idea for Cameron to post a before and after process of sketching/inking thingie! Also, Cameron, do you place the word balloons or all is that all Todd Klein? I assume you present Todd with the inked pages, as opposed to the old-skool "pencils, letters, then inks" method? Does Todd do that overlay thing he does on cel paper or whatever it is that I've seen before?

Okay, as promised, here's some of my rough layouts:

These are done at the size of the standard printed comics page (smaller here), and I'm not concerned too much with detail at this point - it's just to work out composition and storytelling. Once I'm satisfied (and I often go through several different versions of each page) I enlarge them, print out in very light blue on the DC board, and do the final drawing in ink. You'll notice that I do much of the "fleshing out" in the ink stage. I'm training myself to do it all by instinct.

Todd letters the pages after they're inked, and it's all digital. The balloons are usually placed by the editor.

Those are rough?

Great issue. Enjoyed it much more than the first. I agree that the horrible lips on Chubby really worked great. Horrid effect. Gorgeous splash page when Death appears.

Am I the only one who laughed out loud at the last page?

Our Lady Has Left the Building

So this is all a dream right? Seaguy is eager to get Xoo back, when he gets to the ship he jokes about looking for atlantis, they escape the ship and suddenly he and Chubby ARE looking for Atlantis, they find a clockwork wasps nest and Seaguy says he's warned Chubby not to aggravate the wasps but he hasn't... Seaguy or someone else, is dreaming all this.

Wow, that's great Cameron! I'm glad I'm not the only one interested in this. How common is it for artists to work this way? Do you think it's integral for an artist to conceive there own way of working to develop their own style?

Ha, I'm sorry! So many questions! But really, that's quite enlightening and interesting stuff, right there. At first I thought it odd that you started off by pencilling so small - but it makes perfect sense in getting a decent impression of how the final page will actually look.

CameronStewart
14:39 / 18.06.04
Yeah, they're roughs. Look at them!

I get plenty of flak for doing my roughs too tight, but to be honest this is nothing compared to what I used to do on Catwoman - back then my "roughs" were fully inked pages that everyone told me could have easily been used as finals, but I still went ahead and did them all over again. What's posted above is pretty much the norm now.

I'm just pleased to see so much of the work being done in the inking, because I think it really shows.

Were the white lines adding to the rain done by the colourist, or originally drawn there? And congratulations to Pete again this time - because by god, the eery morning sunlight of the final scene is so effective.

But do you have to worry about/be conscious of space for word balloons to go, even though you're not responsible for placing them? Just curious.

>>>Were the white lines adding to the rain done by the colourist, or originally drawn there?<<<

Half and half - I added white rain lines to the page by dragging a whiteout pen across the final inked drawing, but Peter added some Photoshop rain effects also.

>>>But do you have to worry about/be conscious of space for word balloons to go, even though you're not responsible for placing them? Just curious.<<<

Yes, I have to compose the drawings with room for the balloons in mind. It's sometimes difficult though because Grant doesn't write the final dialogue until after the art is turned in (the scripts are fully detailed but have only temporary dialogue that he polishes up based on the art), so at times it's hard to anticipate how much room to leave. Sometimes my editor will flag a panel that is too crowded and won't have room for the balloons, and I have to revise it.

Gotta hand it to you Cam, you are one hell of a draughtsman.Really admire the confidence and elegance of your lines on the roughs, especially Chubby. He seems so damn 3-dimensional. Kudos. I think I'll go and sulk somewhere now.

Just wondering, is it still possible to find an issue of Seaguy #1?]

i'm pretty sure the local store here still has a couple of copies. i'm in aotearoa(new zealand) though so probably not a lot of help. however, if you haven't been able to track a copy down let me know and i'll pick one up for you and we can arrange something.

That picture of mega-xoo was friggin amazing, i felt like i was right there looking up at it.

BTW Cameron is there a specific DCU or wildstorm property you would like to work on with Grant? I've been tring to picture you two on the Authority and the idea is very compelling.....

Just to satisfy my own curiousity, Cameron, I'm assuming you can't get in any trouble with DC for posting those roughs, or are they just not likely to give a crap about it?
