Actually I'm looking forward to some of the amusing conversation that can take place now, with the two of them both having spent considerable time dead.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! Kiss of death, kiss of death! It would be far better to ignore all of that horrible continuity baggage. Ideally, they should just drop the continuity altogether.

Why don't they just bring back Green Lantern/Green Arrow?

I'd buy that. Well, as long as they give it a decent writer. Heck, throw in Black Canary for a few issues as well.

Joy. I can look forward to more giant Oan boxing gloves, sledgehammers and hedgeclippers, serving mighty green justice! Ethan, say it ain't so, man. At least pique my interest and tell me that Hal is going to be magically bequeathed an imagination. From the "space-cop" perspective, no-one beats Hal Jordan. If that's the nature of the new GL, then I'm all for it. I just really came to like the idea I got from GM's JLA: that the magic green ring works equally well on imagination as it does on willpower. Just hope they don't kill Kyle; I'd like to see him broken and insecure, due to his replacement, and still in possession of the Superior Power Ring. Zero willpower and unfettered imagination would make him a far better foil/ally/enemy for Hal Jordan than, say, Sinestro.
Like KITT and KARR, really.
(just read the interview. good job, E. work that media!)

Green Lantern: Rebirth #1

Ethan's art is beautiful, the story is ok so far, nothing too exciting, all setup at this point. Should we start a new thread for REBIRTH or keep this as the GL: REBIRTH thread?

Keep this one going.

I loved Green Lantern as a youngster. Hal was such a great character, and the Emerald Dawn year one stuff just added to that. In the New Frontier's (I know not continuity) he was well handled except the 'Sufferin' Suzie' stuff.

I know a lot of people didn't like it, and I felt Parallax was a bit pony, but his breakdown was so well handled, just the idea of if, being driven mad by impotence to save his city, and going up against the other lanterns was fantastic - it was the best hero deconstruction that has been done yet, and yes, he's a hero and hero's don't do that and blah blah, it made so much sense for it to be him, there has always been an element of danger about Hal, flawed and fearless.

Anyway, I swerved the 1st issue the other day, going to wait and see.

I loved the art, but is it just me or is Geoff Johns really pissing on Spectre and Bats a bit much?

Specially on Batman... I hevenĀ“t liked the characterization of Bats during this Hal debacle, from the last panel on Final Night to Rebirth #1. If someone can forgive the JOKER in the killing joke and will revive him in Last Laugh how can he not forgive a former hero seeking for redemption?.

Other than that I think Johns is facing a huge challenge trying to sort the past 10 years of messed up stories.

Anyway on the Parallax issue... I feel the transformation was rushed, very disrespectful of the existing fan base, (even if the concept was good) and the only excuse Kevin Dooley could come up with was that they were no longer able to write stories about him, because he was boring and stereotyped. To me that's just being lazy.

On a side note I like Parallax I never thought too much of him as a villain but as a misunderstood all-powerful being, something like old greek gods. And one of the best stories of the character is Emerald Night (the final night tie in).

And if they wanted to get rid of Hal why not give him a hero's death?

Now, it's as if DC is using Parallax's motto: they want to "make things right".

Emerald Twilight: good concept, but a terribly flawed presentation. One has to wonder why this doesn't happen to more heroes

I hope this is not a retcon, that all the GL's remain as GL's (Jonh, Kyle, Hal, Alan and maybe, just maybe, Guy) and that there is no mention that Hal was under the influence of mind-control. I like my heroes flawed not mindless zombies.

Not sure about this issue at all. I have no strong feelings one way or the other when it comes to Hal. I like him, I like Kyle, I like the GLC.

~SPOILERS~

I do hope that Kyle didn't die in this issue (it's a little unclear).

That whole "Do you believe in UFO's?" thing at the start was stupid. How the fuck do you live in the DCU and not believe in UFO's?!

Destroying WARRIOR'S seemed like cleaning house. I expect Guy's vuldarian (or whatever) powers to be eradicated and him returned to GL status.

I did like the almost return of Coast City. The way it was described made it seem really creepy. Having everything back except the buildings (bar Hal's) was effective.

Might be intersting to see how this turns out.

Might be dire, though...

Guy Gardner's Warrior/Vuldarian/whatever the fuck status annoys me. Ever since he got the Warrior I can grow weapons out of arms & skin shit I feel like he's just too ridiculous. That and the stupid war paint markings across his body are just too, too dumb. I sure hope he loses all that shit and goes back to being a ring-weilding wise-ass idiot like we all know & love.

I think Johns is pointing out Batman's 'once you've betrayed me, I'll never trust you again' philosophy. Other writers have portrayed Bruce's feelings towards Hal in the same way, not just Johns. And as one online reviewer said, it's nice to see Bats being wrong (or just plain too harsh on someone) once in a while... he is ruled by rage and anger, and it doesn't make sense that he's always be right and have good judgment.

Oh, and Ethan's Batman (both in GL and in BATS/CATS: TRAIL OF THE GUN) looks very, VERRRY Brian Bolland-influenced. Am I the only one who thinks that?

LDones
20:12 / 03.11.04
I never noticed it before, but I alsao thought Ethan's work on this rung very much of Brian Bolland, which is not a bad thing.

Our Ethan Van puts a good level of detail into.

I HATEHATEHATE the way Geoff Johns writes the reigning generation of Dad-Superheroes. They're boring old fucks under his pen who are revered as gods. I have little hope of Hal Jordan being interesting in his new incarnation.

(Darwyn Cooke's Hal Jordan from New Frontier was one of the the best characterization of him I've ever read - made me like him).

Will Kyle die? Seems possible.

Ethan on pencils AND inks is a nice treat. Looking forward to the second issue, in which hopefully more will happen.

Okay, so I picked it up. Didn't like it. Don't like the way Johns writes any characters at the moment, he spends so much time trying to show that he knows everyones back story, but then seems to ignore them. Guy was really badly written, he wouldn't talk about Hal in any favourable way, he hates him. Batman seems too angry for batman. Anyway it just was flat, especially after reading Astonishing X-Men.

I find myself liking Johns' stuff most of the time, REALLY liking it about 35% of the time and feeling cold about it some of the time.

For me, this was not Johns' best work at all. It left me very lukewarm... but I do want to see where this is going after the 'all set-up' first issue.

I thought it was a little slow, Green Lantern not even being properly back by the end, but I'm dying to know what happens next.

Ethans art was stellar though, and the reason I actually got it in the first place. Erm.........I'm not giving up on Geoff yet, it's only the warm up.

Ethan Van Sciver

Oh yeah, hang in there, Neon. Remember, the purpose of this miniseries is to GET Hal Jordan through the muck and mire of past continuity, explain what happened, and make him able to be GL again by the end. GREEN LANTERN volume 4 #1 will be a fresh start. In the meantime, I can't wait till you see what Geoff has cooked up in the next 5 issues.

I agree, I do want to see where this is going and most of the time I really like Johns' writing. Plus, I could see myself buying this on the basis of Ethan's art alone -- something I didn't do for Identity Crisis (I bought the first 2 issues of IC and have read the rest in the store cause I don't like the book overall, though Rags' art is nice).

Rebirth #2:

Isn't Kilowog dead? Didn't Hal kill him when he went nutso?

18:17 / 29.11.04
I believe Kilowog WAS killed, but then there seems to be a great deal of ressurection going on as a result of the ring (Coast City, Hal perhaps, etc...). I really enjoyed issue two, and I'm excited to see where Johns is taking this series. It seems as though he's setting up Parallax to be some sort of inborn flaw within all individuals who possess the ring, like a dual nature generated not unlike a mental virus. That would certainly explain the violent behavior of Kilowog, Stewart, Gardner, and by comparison Jordan when he lost his mind originally. Maybe an inherent effect of prolonged GL ring possession? Either way, that would also shed some light on Rayner's reluctance to use his ring now (in addition to not wanting to be found by this supposed new incarnation of Parallax which I'd assume would be able to track him based on his use of the ring as well). Van Sciver's art is solid, despite some aforementioned inconsistencies/lack of symmetry. It's striking none the less and I'll be honest and attribute as much as the prodominant reason for my interest in the mini, story second.

His splash of Guy Gardner was really fantastic. I'm also enjoying this mini, as I've been getting into a bunch of Johns' other DC work lately. I guess every comic reader goes through their DC/Marvel Sea Changes, although Identity Crisis sure as fuck isn't helping matters.

Kilowog was ressurected in the "Green Lantern: Legacy" OGN as "Dark Lantern", a sort of zombie dark avenger version of himself with black skin covered by glowing runes who carried a scythe. Dark Lantern lurked around Oa (which was recreated in that same OGN) for a while before being returned fully to life through various machinations. Since then he's lived on Oa with a small group of other former GLs with whom Kyle and Ganthet were hoping to restart the GLC. Oddly, though, they never passed out new rings; Kilowog and the others have been going into combat with big guns instead! "Rebirth" is the first time we've seen the ressurected Kilowog back in full GL regalia. Guess they were waiting for an event miniseries...

Kilowog as "Dark Lantern"??? Weeird. I never read that graphic novel, though the art by Brent Anderson (pencils) & inked by Bill Sienkiewcz seemed a visual treat. Joe Kelly seemed like he was on a decent game in that, from my various skims, but nothing too exciting...

Kyle doesn't die.

You know how I know? 'Cos he's in the Azz/Lee Superman arc, which is set a year ahead of all other DC titles.

A-ha.

Also, phew.

So Parrallaxx can't kill him, then, unless it can travel through time. Well, if the GL corps can't get him, Crisis 2005 should do it.

(And for the record, I've enjoyed the first two issues so far)

>> In Brightest Day

Following the release of his Vertigo graphic novel, The Originals, Dave Gibbons is said to be working on a Green Lantern project for a 2005 release date. This project may be timed to coincide with the Green Lantern relaunch by Geoff Johns and Carlos Pacheco.
