ONLY NICE THINGS

I have ONLY NICE THINGS to say about Geoff Johns, of course, but might it be that the reason why people aren't talking about this (barring that there aren't any people and they don't talk) is that there doesn't seem to be an awful lot to say. Zombies are very popular at the moment, Geoff Johns is very prolific. Ergo, Black Lanterns.

well, the reason it doesn't feel like a Marvel Zombies ripoff to me is that Johns has been building up to this for years, and that it's accompanied by the Spectrum War of Light... it ain't just the Black Lanterns we gotta deal with here.

Although we aren't really seeing very much of the actual war itself are we? Unless you count Rage of the Red Lanterns, Sins of the Star Saphires, and Agent Orange (all of which are really only the opening shots of the war).

It feels too rushed really. The teasers in Sinestro Corps War seemed to suggest (to me) that this war should have raged on for more than a couple of issues, decimating the galaxy in the process, and that by the end of it none of the corps are in any shape to resist the fall of the Blackest Night.

This just looks like a load of super-brawls that'll be quickly resolved in time for all the corps to kiss and make up and join forces to kick zombie ass.

Mr Scientist, I have to say, Blackest Night has been pretty kick arse so far. The only mistep this far in my opinion was the third issue of tales of the corps, I wanted more non-green stories and the directors cut issue#1 was totally naff.

So looking forward to the next issue. A mate has been smsing me all day with 'OMG so many deaths!' and 'earth is basically fucked'. I'm enjoying this way more than final crisis, and it looks like it will come out in a timely way too (unlike said crisis). Its that giddy thrill of an impossibly huge threat. Sinesto Corp war had that. Amassing a truly formidable force that is capable of annihilating our heroes, in all honesty, quite easily. It sound like shit is just about to hit the fan and spray everyone! HUZZAH!

I highly recommend.

It's good to know that you're enjoying it. I generally only read GL in the collected form (it was the same with FC) so delays don't really factor into it with me.

Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy Geoff Johns GL work in general, and his ability to meet deadlines is a trait that's handy in any comic scribbler. But, for me, the whole zombie meme has sort of run its course. As I say it doesn't really help that Marvel have been doing their super-zombie thing for quite some time now so the Black Lanterns don't really seem as orginal as they might have.

Like I said; a bit more of the War of Light would have been appreciated. That Blackest Night is coming down close on the heels of Final Crisis just seems a little bit too much (it's not really been a good time to be a civilian in the DV Universe recently has it).

I think it's a valid complaint that we haven't seen much of the War of Light lately, but I figure that will (hopefully) come into play/interact with the Blackest Night stuff sooner rather than later, as opposed to 8 issues of "Fighting Zombies!" and then the War of Light. As surmised above, it will probably take all the colors to kick Zombie ass, esp. given that there were prophecies that Yellow will fight alongside Green and blahblah blah. [insert soundtrack to Donovan's "Mello Yello" here] "Zombie 70s Justice League" was sort of cute but not as cool as Johns thinks it is. And I guess The Atom/Ray Palmer got zombified and it will be a reveal next issue since he's not in #2's final page...

and if someone does something good with Aquaman after all this, that can only be a good thing. How many countless times have we read on message boards across the world, over the years, 'if only someone wrote a really great Aquaman series (other than Peter David years ago), there is so much potential in that character that hasn't been tapped.' (although Dan Jurgens' short run writing the character - with waaay pre-Capt. America Steve Epting art - was pretty decent, surprisingly so, as I recall)

oh, and this is super-geeky, I know, but the Spectre shouldn't be able to be Black Lanterned, because, ya know, he's like connected with God and stuff. Although I guess we have seen the Spectre go bad/out of control before, right...? (but that's usually only been when he's not got a human host to ground him) It just seemed a bit much to make the Spectre Black Lantern eeevil.

It's the whole 'eeeevil' thing I have a problem with. I'd prefer the idea if the black lantern force was a void, mindless. The whole 'we're bad elongated evil sue badies' stuff just doesn't interest me. The other colours/lights cover the emotional spectrum, so black should be a complete lack of that.

Every five minutes isn't it? The guy needs to work out his issues. You don't see Phantom Stranger entering the rage cage on the slightest pretext.

I would guess that the Spectre's link to a dead human (is it still that GCPD cop?) makes him vulnerable to the Black Rings.

As surmised above, it will probably take all the colors to kick Zombie ass, esp. given that there were prophecies that Yellow will fight alongside Green and blahblah blah.

Supervillain/Superhero team-ups are kind of my kryptonite and part of the reason I'll probably keep reading. Just to see my favourite GL (Gardener) fighting back to back with my favourite SC (Sluush) whilst that mad little Red Lantern LOLcat goes through zombies like a teeny-tiny combine harvester.

I'm just glad GJ has gotten back to his roots, and is impaling people big style again. Take that, Hawkgirl!

I notice that over in the pages of Ex Machina, it's clear that yet another major comic book writer had the idea of colors corresponding to different powers (although not emotions)... as the story of Mayor Hundred starts to enter its final act. (if anyone here is still reading Ex Machina as well) And it must have been around 1 or 2 years ago that both Vaughn and Johns hatched their color-spectrum-plotlines since they started planting seeds in both their series a while ago to that effect...
