On the subject of the famous comics visual motif of graying temples, you'd think that by now, SOMEONE at Marvel or DC would have ALL-GREY hair by now. My vote is for Jay Garrick or Alan Scott to get all-grey/white hair as a result of the MASSIVE SENSE-SHATTERING CHANGES OF INFITITE CRISIIIIIISSS!!

Also, the monthly by Johns & Pacheco has been only OK so far, although Ethan's story arc is up next...

Yeah, it was two issues of lead-up just to get to the only mildly exciting Battery-Low-Punch-Battery-Face-To-Get-Back-To-Full-Power climax, which just doesn't hold a candle to the pace of Rebirth which had much better beats like every five pages.

I just really couldn't read it. The first issue did nothing to draw me in, so haven't gone back. I'm thinking of looking at Green Lantern Corps when that comes about, but apart from that my valley ain't so green at the moment.

i haven't read past the first issue, either. i was against the whole thing with Hal returning to begin with, but Rebirth was actually good (despite the greying temples thing), if only for the superhuman acrobatics necessary to wring a half-decent story from the Parallax mess.

but, well, once that was patched up, i couldn't manage to make myself care about Hal Jordan, and the first issue was just so much "i'm a pilot, dammit. and a damn good one. you can tell by the set of my jaw and my firm handshake that i'm a stand-up guy and a damn good pilot, dammit" that i couldn't continue.

I find the book oddly compelling. It is a little streatched out, but issue three delivered some smackdown. Guess I was more of a GL fan that I realized.

Man, Hal's just really into punching people now, isn't he? I find it immensely hilarious that somebody could deduce his secret identity basically by noticing his unusual habit of hitting people in the face in the middle of conversations.

yeah, all the punches are getting a bit much. Also, didn't Hal have his wrist practically broken in #3? They showed it all bloody a few times and Hal wincing in pain repeatedly but by the end of the issue he was totally fine. Lame.

I'm pretty happy with Hal punching people and the flyboy getting his wings back stuff and the obvious new love interest.

It's the Green Lanterning that's boring me. I still haven't warmed up to the constant chatter from his ring and the Manhunters are about as boring as villians get.

Newsarama linked to this article recently (from some smallish newspaper):

>> Adams ponders return to comics

While the 64-year-old remains very busy working with his advertising production company, Continuity Studios, he has taken the time to dabble in comics again recently.

"I just did an eight-page thing for Marvel for one of their X-Men books and it was fun — but it was only eight pages," Adams said.

So has that taste whetted his appetite?

"I'd kind of like to do a Batman thing. I've been talking to DC Comics about a Batman thing for a while," he said. "Or maybe it'll be some Green Lantern/Green Arrow stuff or Green Lantern stuff."

In fact, Adams says he is quietly pursuing a stint on the current Green Lantern series, a title he completed another signature run on in the 1970s.

"I talked to the writer. Maybe we'll do a couple of Green Lantern stories," the artist teased.
------------------------------------------------

Innteresting...there were rumors that Adams would pencil a run on All-Star Batman & Robin, but now Miller has recently said that Adams was talking to DC about a different project instead. This looks to be it.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

*BUMP*

I can't really be bothered with the "fresh" Star Sapphire story in the "main title," but I ended up mainlining a bunch of the current Green Lantern Corps through a set of nostril-like eyes recently and - wow! I'm actually enjoying a Green Lantern comic book again. I'm both delighted and appalled to see Dave Gibbons picking up on random Alan Moore plot points and characters for his revival, with Mogo suddenly social *and* possibly quite evil, and maybe I've been watching too much CSI lately but I like Green Lanterns as Space Police Procedural.

I mean, seriously, with the way things are going. We only have to count the *days* until the F-Sharp Bell shows up.

Soranik Natu as the current Green Lantern of Korugar -- and the way Korugarian society deals with the idea of the Corps -- is really holding my interest. It's nice to see a genuinely new character with some interesting personality and background points to develop on the basic idea of the Corps. Plus, Guy Gardner as an Hono(u)r Lantern, Salakk as Guardian-message boy, and no Hal Jordan to speak of. The Green Lantern Corpse with ultra-violet energy instead of emerald. Mogo's sector partner (and the lack of restriction on the number of Lanterns in a given sector!).

But, you know, my green-green thoughts are sticky and half-finished.

Yeah, sometimes this book is fun in a mindless popcorn movie kind of way... I do like Ivan Reis' art. And I definitely will be picking up Van Sciver's Sinestro Corps one-shot, coming in a few months, methinks.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Over in the main title, I think it's kind of funny that Abin Sur had some kid that nobody ever knew about because nobody bothered to check in with his family -- really dropped the ball there, Hal! Replacements seem to be expected to go and see their predecessors' families on behalf of the Corps.

As far as Corps, well, F-Sharp Bell seems to be the only element mentioned in the original Moore stories who hasn't come back or at least been referenced -- the prophecy by the Empire of Tears has just come up and I'm left wondering if they've just restarted the Corps in time for it to meet it's fiery end...

And, apparently the Durlan Daggle clan has a history of heroics, conspiracies, and Espionage Squads.

I thought I read somewhere on wikipedia that Abin Sur's son was established/created in the GL comics by a writer long ago, long before Johns. Not sure though...

I'm not sure I can handle that artist, grid. Ze's stuff is so...shiny.

Green Lantern Corps #13 is out this week, which I'm excited about! It took me some adjusting, but I've really come to love the Patrick Gleason artwork.

...and it's good! Planetary surgery, Mogo's sector partner, Lanterns displaying skills and inherent abilities beyond ring-slinging, and a fine lead-in to the next arc.

GLC is the only one I REALLY look forward to getting. I usually read each one more than once which I rarely do with any other comics I pick up. And i don't know why. It's good.
I only got Ish #1 because it came with a plastic ring, but I'm not one to let a comic go unread once purchased. I'm digging it a lot and I had never really been a GL fan previous to this...

I've picked this comic up a couple of times and it struck me as unimaginative, parochial borecore, written by a guy who draws luverly pictures but can't do dialogue for toffee. Must be missing something.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
01:14 / 20.06.07
Oddly, I can barely stand the Gibbons-drawn sections of the series - his work feels so utterly flat a lot of the time, bt maybe that's the inker. And the dialogue can be a little frustrating, particularly certain characters - Iolande, one of the n00bs, is a "royal princess" and will continue to use that exact phrase once a page for the rest of her life - but the ideas are often quite fun. The Green Lantern Corpse story I mentioned above is a good example - ironically, it's a little nastier than I usually like my comics but was a fun digression and expansion of Lantern Lore and I like spy action. Gleason's art is also improving by bounds as the series progresses.

Hmmmm, I enjoyed the Corpse story a lot more than I'd usually enjoy a superhero book that gory as well, especially the stuff with the normal dominators - for once they were portrayed with just the right balance of humour and genuine menace, but one should probably note that Gibbons didn't write that story, that was by Keith Champagne - more commonly know as an inker, but also an intriguing novice writer.

With regards to the Gibbons issues I agree that there are some spectacular ideas in there - however most of them are Alan Moores ideas from the few Green Lantern stories he wrote bck in the day, which probably explains why the ideas are by far the best thing about the run. Now I'm not complaining about that - the ideas Moore contributed to GL have been pretty much wasted for years, and it's time someone used them, but I am a little concerned that Gibbons might be trading on his connection with Moore a little.

Still I will say Gibbons is in my opinion improving a lot as he goes along - I thought that last story was easily the best bit of writing I've read from Gibbons, the story was actually properly dramatic, rather than slow and dull, and if he can improve say half as much again as he's improved since RTW then we'll be well sorted.

On the other hand I absolutely love the Gleason art - He was good over in Aquaman, but he's way better here. Truth be told I really like the GLC concept, so the book would have to be absolutely awful to have me not reading it, but so long as Gleason's drawing I won't be begrudging buying it, however patchy the writing might be.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

I hadn't realized that Champagne wrote those issues. I wonder if he'll do any more fill-ins. The Dominators managed to click all sorts of body horror buttons and he painted them as a proper galactic threat ... something I haven't gotten from them since the v4 Legion days, and even then ...

Darn it - that's exactly what I wanted to reference and forogot. It was the similarity between the Giffen/Bierbaum Legion portrayal of the Dominators, and the Champagne/Gleason one that really made that story click for me.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
15:06 / 20.06.07
The obnoxious continuity nerd in me was a little sad that Champagne didn't refer to the Dominator Homeworld as "Elia," but on the whole I was pleased with the portrayal - they were so decadent and swollen in their darkened chambers...

I always liked - I'm not sure if this has really been used since the Giff/Bier Legion days, maybe its a "future" development for the Dominator culture that hasn't happened yet - that most of their technology was primarily organic with some non-organic components - I think the phlegmy, greasy vibe off their equipment and those pulsating clone-pods added some light Giger touches to what could have been a generic alien conquerer species with Yellow Menace undertones.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Huh. That is one busy costume. Luckily, the person in question is involved with an Exiles-style multiverse-jumping series coming up from the stupid Countdown cloning beds and will probably be right as rain within issues.

This is not exactly generating a shockwave for me. But then, there's something oddly ironic about that character turning into a replacement for that other character based on how he originally came into being as a replacement for that other character's first identity. Although, if we see Kilowog blasted into a skeleton again, the irony will have bled out. Anyone have any Ron Marz comics lying around with which to innoculate ourselves?

I think that's Kyle Rayner, and I suspect that because he's Ion it's the standard 'with great power comes the great temptation to become an evil demigod with poor fashion sense' superhero tale number #8. All that's probably needed is the ghosts of his dead girlfriends to talk him down.

THX-1138

I'm kind of hoping Champagne will write a follow-up to his story because 1. it wasn't bad, and 2. It seemed to end on a possibly to-be-continued note. And there was a little tidbit in the story that I'm not sure was resolved.
And i'm with Papers on the Gibbons side. His art didn't really grab me.
