The Best Thing About New X-Men Was...

It was probably to emphasize that something was going on between Scott and Emma, and that on some level, it was the same with Logan and Jean. The subtext is all romantic tension.

The best thing about New X-Men: Morrison managed to make Scott Summers an interesting and likeable character. Many lesser writers have tried to do this by ditching the uptight, repressed schtick and making him "cool" (hello, Mark Millar's goatee-bearded jock, and goodbye) - Morrison decides that the repression, the ISSUES, the fact that he's so "brutally hard on himself" - these are the cool bits.

(This marred slightly IMHO by Morrison's failure to provide a sufficiently satisfying conclusion to Scott's part of the story, but maybe it was just a set-up for the Scott & Emma show, in which case I hope Whedon picks up the ball and runs with it...)

Second best thing about New X-Men: Quentin Quire's outfit. Agree with me.

Beast: "I'm learning to play the drums".

Fairly brought a tear to my eye, it did.

I get it. In Morrison's New X-Men Beast had turned into a big cat, and Grant always writes his cats as loveable, sympathetic, and doomed.

So much...so much!!!

"Ladies and Gentlemen, my name is Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X. And I am a mutant."

"Die, Charles. I'm going to catch you."

"Heart got stuck////Shock almost killed it."

"Did you think you'd live forever, little speck?"

But the BEST: Jean and Logan on Asteroid M

Oh, and let's not forget that the Phoenix Mythology makes sense now. I'd say that's the biggest accomplishment in X-Dom.

Morrison's dialogue (hyuck). "Are these words from the future. Gus was a good dog"(damn right). The White Queen! Hank coming out of the closet? The scene w/ Emma walking in on Scott in bed (Woof!). Frank Quitely's art. Cassandra Nova. Nova as Xavier's twin. The special class. Barnell Bohusk. Xorn. Xorn. Xorn.

Thanks for listening.

1) Scott and Hank remembering how Professor X made them study hand-painted diagrams of villain's costumes.
2) Quentin Quire and his old newspaper clipping.
Morrison took the absurd cliches of the X-Men's huge backstory and made it all seem new and... real.

The Genosha massacre. The one thing that would be nigh impossible to retcon.

The school as a school.

Emma's line, every single bitchy one of them.

Beast coming out but not really.

Frank Quitely's pencils, I now see people as Frank draws them, very odd.

But the best bit?
The fact I bought an X-men comic for over three years and:
1) I enjoyed every issue
2) I followed every sub-plot
3) The stories had an end and so did the sub-plots
4) I didn't drop the title when the art was bad because it didn't matter

Can anyone say they've done the same thing with an X-comic in the last 15 years?

I can't. It was an experience, not just a comic.

But Eff this!

The Best Thing About New X-Men Was...

Emma Frost.

Cyclops: "Relax. I've survived more jet aircraft crashes than any other mutant."

That brought a wry smirk to my face. Naturally, though, there are so many best moments that the entire run tends to bleed together, in that way.

Oh, and, sure. Boombastic. Right.

Far too many things that were great until the end of Riot at Xavier's.

It was probably the first issue that was the best. There was so much promise in that beginning, I remember reading the first two issues together and hopping around in excitement.

I haven't returned to any issue after I read it once but one stands out. It's when Cassandra who's wearing Xavier's body is waiting for Lilandra and Co. and looking up at the sky and grinning and talking about great power in the wrong hands.

Or of course, Grant's trademark poignant oneliners like...

"Are these words from the future?"

Not the best, but pretty damn funny: The ultimate Wolverine / Sabretooth showdown. Logan and Creed side by side using the Hellfire Club urinals.

Creed: 'What you got that I don't?'

Logan (smiling): 'You tell me, bub.'

Our Lady Has Left the Building

rawkusboi The Genosha massacre. The one thing that would be nigh impossible to retcon.

Nonsense. They did it with those mutants that lived under New York, Colossus' mad brother kills them all, a few years later it's revealed most of them handily buggered off to another dimension. They could easily do that here, or time travel or something.

How long will Xavier stay away from the Institute? Five minutes?

Rawk'n'Roll
19:42 / 02.05.04
Claremont likes Xavier away from the Institute so as long as he's involved I expect Charles won't be.

And the Mutant Massacre retcon was one of the worst in history, but it was done to a bunch of unknowns living hidden from the public in the sewers. Genosha was a nation, the denizens of the MU would have watched the destruction on TV. A writer would be hard pressed to say "That didn't actually happen".

It would.

Basilisk!

*after Xorn tells Bishop that the special class are sensitive kids*

Beak: There is no such place as 'the toilet' in Clue! Say that again and I will kill you!
Basilisk: hyuk! There is now! Professor Sex in the toilet with the lawnmower!

"See me for what I am, OK?"

Best thing?

The sexy big hardcover collections. Roll on volume 3...

Actually thinking more about what Matthew said, surely the best thing is the implied OED definition of 'boombastic' with the etymology going back to Shaggy.

Oh yes, Quentin, we're reading it as you speak. Some of us even have the outfits.

I liked Bumble-Boy, or whatever his name was. All two or three panels of him. I want a Quitely-drawn Bumble-Boy miniseries as soon as Morrison's DC contract runs out.

D. Falconer Retconning Genosha would be pilloried to death. It would.

And the number of times that comics haven't undone something for fear the fans wouldn't like it is...?

Seriously the best thing about New X-Men was that it "went there." Y'know how on the talk shows the girls with attitude are like "Don't go there! don't Go there!" Grant Morrison went there. He adressed all the cliches, poked them with a stick, made fun of them, pissed on them, and acknowledged alot of unsaid things about the 40+ years of continuity.

the elevation of a one issue character.... barnell bohusk, into beak... one of the most endearing characters to come out of grant's work. villified by comic's geeks as just a lame chicken.... beak turns from big loser to proud father and leader. it's almost like watching another character make contact with Barbelith.
favorite line from him.... 'hello universe.. this is the best day of my life.'

i have to give credit to my favorite quotable line. emma frost:' i came back for my hand bag. it was a louis vitton.'
that line would've made lord fanny proud.

Astonishingly, all of you except Alberto Fluxington III (King of Spain), who is indeed correct.

BOOMBASTIC. Class.

Best thing in my opinion? The Psilent Rescue in Progress issue. Story and art in perfect balance, with subliminal sexy stuff too. Who'da thunk such a silk purse could have been made of a company-wide mandate ?
Just lookit the detail in that picture of Charles holding up the big head. I mean, look at it. Lovely stuff.

favorite line from him.... 'hello universe.. this is the best day of my life.'

i feel like such a dork for saying this, but that seriously made me cry. on paper, that sounds like it should have been the cheeziest, sappiest, most horrible cheap heartstring-pulling thing ever, but it got me.
