I've given this a lot of thought, and I'm pretty sure that the best thing about New X-Men was that 150 years into the future, Beak's great grandson Tito used the word "boombastic."

It wasn't the same old X-Men that had been trotting out month after month for God knows how long.

It had comic moments not restricted to the annual baseball/basketball/softball game.

The school actually had students.

Mutants actually started developing their own culture.

Things actually started changing.

"Seize the school!"

"Oh Good Lord! Seize the school and then what? Then what?"

It had comic moments not restricted to the annual baseball/basketball/softball game.

Beak and Beast played baseball in one issue.

Just the character interaction. I loved the way he played with the Emma/Scott/Jean triangle. I feel like when he was playing for story, as in Riot at Xavier's, and when he was playing for character, as in the first Fantomex and Murder at the Mansion, both worked really well. It was just great fun to read.

The revalation of the benevolent nature of the pheonix entities. During that last issue i imagined the pheonix ultraverse to be similar in nature to what the interior of barbelith buoy is like.

Those words /hospital white hot/ scathed my soul.

The sublities of subliminal speech. Spine=Penis. Everythig hidden in the background. The race to find Xavier both Jean (the voluptous widow/Magdalen) and Emma-no bones-about-it diamond clad superbitch. Spitting out psychic green goo and trying to teach and do the right thing. Remember she had a tough image to live up to. By far the silent issue is my fave. Jean and Emma doing all of the keg work while Scott and Logan listen to music and read in their finest threads.

My favorite moment and page, when Angel is trying to goad Beak into having sex with her and they're interrupted by the U-Men. Odd, brilliant, and beautiful.

Nobody introduced themselves and gave a brief description of their powers as if completing a form.

Our Lady Has Left the Building

The first year when Grant tossed out loads of ideas that never really went anywhere, the X-Men as mutant rescue squad... nothing happened. X-Corp, not mentioned again after halfway through the second year. New teaching methods, not mentioned again right after Emma mentions it.

No, I'm sorry, you'll all totally wrong. It's "boombastic." Trust me.

I *really* like the bit where Cyclops and Beast fight the giant robot in the basement of the ruined X-Mansion.

God, so much to choose from... but I have to say it was the Beak story and the fact that his grandson has become everything he he wanted to be and still looks up to Beak.

Hmmm. Maybe Wolverine's claws popping through Jean. That was hot. (Subliminal THAT, quinine!)

Seriously, though, it might be "Scott... you're my favorite superhero." Or Beast's "I think I might be gay."

Matthew -- change your name to "Flux=Boombastic," please. I'll give you a dollar.

Quitely. I never would have stuck with it were it not for the superb handled movement, time and space in the second issue.

Lots of good stuff in there, but I think that the repetition of the line "Did you think you'd live for ever, little spec?" in the last issue got me more than pretty much anything else.

i think the very fact that Beak's great-grandson was named "Tito" might itself be worth noting on this list, actually.

The line that got me hooked was seeing Beast tell Jean "I feel like a Hindu sex god."

Grant Morrison covering Marvel Girl in sperm. Hey, it was integral to the plot!

Jean Grey's name changing to Mrs. Jean Grey-Summers. It added to her old mean bitch school marm quota...

Matthew Fluxington
11:01 / 26.04.04
I might be wrong, but I think that she was already calling herself Jean Grey-Summers before Grant was writing the comic.

Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic. Boombastic.

I doubt that she did. Jean Grey's been her real name and her codename for the past twelve years since she abandoned her Phoenix moniker...

I also agree that the double last name lends an heir of sophistication to the old dear...

She was all about Grey-Summers in the Seagle years. Sorry.

Stepford Cuckoos. Before one of them was "Mindee" (Gah!).

Quitely in general. The Hindu Sex God comment.

The climax of Imperial, when Emma tricks Cassandra into possessing Stuff's re-programmed brain. The script and art in that school-room scene are my favourite of the whole run: simple and beautiful and touching and funny all at the same time.

"What am I? How come no think much good?"
"Don't worry. That's ok. This is a school. You're here to learn"

Best scene ever

Beast: "I'm learning to play the drums".

Fairly brought a tear to my eye, it did.

I dunno if its my favorite/best thing..but what always sticks out in my head are 2 things....

"What makes you such a bitch, Emma?"
"Breeding, darling. Top class breeding."

...that..and the time jean was dealin with the u-men....
"im thinking about moving that food up....and down..."

Morrison was right on for emphasizing the school idea, and for making mutants freaky-deaky again.

This is more a question than a best of kinda comment. On all the New X-Men cover that feature the full team, why does Scott and Emma always appear on Xavier's right side and Jean and Logan on his left. The one exception is the class photo cover. What's the deal?
