Magneto is Jewish, though I think it was introduced in Claremont's run.
Not quite - to the best of my knowledge, the first knock-down drag-out statement of Magneto's religion was the X-Men movie, where he is wearing a yellow star. There were a lot of *suggestions* that he was Jewish before that, however, pretty much to the point of certainty. See this complete if somewhat partisan FAQ - http://www.alara.net/opeople/xbooks/magjew.html.
After I posted the quote, I realised that the orginator of the quote was a bit misinformed. I'm not sure of the exact details of Jewish faith, but I know not eating meat is not one of the pratices. Which is why I deleted it, because being misinformed is not funny. And knowing is half the battle.
Quite so. What on Earth are they teaching in school these days? First Rob Frost finds out about anti-Semitism at the age of 25, and now this.
Quick version: Some, not all, Jews eat kosher, that is follow to a varying degree of exactitude a set of dietary rules collectively called kashrut. Kashrut concerns both the forbidding of certain kinds of foodstuffs and the preparation of accepted foodstuffs. Basically, land animals with cloven hooves that chew the cud are kosher, others are not - so, pigs are out, as are cats. Most birds are OK, except some species of scavenging or predatory birds. Fish with fins and scales are kosher - so, Chubby da Choona OK, Mollusc Girl not. Oh, and reptiles, frogs, worms and insects are right out, barring some forms of locust. You rarely need to deal with that one. For these accepted meats to be kosher, they also need to be prepared in a particular way, generally including shechitah - the cutting of the throat by an observant Jew - and the removal of all removable blood by hanging and salting, blood being non-kosher. Oh, and even kosher meat cannot be eaten with dairy.
There's a fair bit more to it, but that's the basics. This may be a bit more information than you need for general usage, but if "Jews don't eat meat" doesn't immediately trigger your wrongometer then, with the utmost respect, there are some books you might want to read not involving mutants or pictures.
(Incidentally, Magneto is portrayed in Ultimate X-Men as a vegetarian who only eats the flesh of Homo sapiens, but then Ultimate X-Men is a bit shit for just this sort of reason). |
