Hmmm, Salvador Larocca draws strange heads...

If you've never seen Larocca's art before, don't judge it by what you see in New X-Men #155. Larocca is capable of way better work. Check out: this site for better examples of Larocca's art.

So my roommate and I have been obsessively watching our way through Buffy on DVD. We finally reached the end of Season 2, which was the last the local library had and she persuaded me to go halves on buying Seasons 3 and 4 off of Amazon.

Just watched episode 3.18, 'Earshot' and it was classic Claremont.

Get this: Buffy temporarily gets telepathy (don't worry about why). She loses control of it in the middle of a crowded school cafeteria and gets swamped by a rush of voices, thoughts crashing into her mind. She drops to her knees. And the whole scene is exactly like all those great classic Romita Jr scenes where Rachel (or occasionally Rogue) loses control of her telepathy and curls up foetally while a mass of thought baloons overwhelm the panel.

And then!

And then, right at the heart of it, Buffy collapses, the mind-voices still, and she just 'hears' one voice, saying 'Laugh now. Because this time tomorrow I'm going to kill you all'.

Which is exactly - exactly - the setup for Uncanny X-Men #196, "What Was That?!!".

So, my point is: Whedon really did grow up reading this stuff, and loving it. In a bunch of ways, I feel like he's "one of us". That may be possessive, but it means I'll cut him a little slack, see where he goes with this.

It could be pretty good.

ooh sa good issue thatn 'nall. pervy rachel phoenix, maggie talking her down, kitty getting jumped by a mob of student radicals.

is that the one?

we only got that one over here on account of some spurious secret wars 2 xover. they really were wonderful days. there's a thread to be done about how spoilt the little buggers are for newsagent-available reprints now, but not now.

196 was a great issue - was that also the one where Wolvie put his claws in Rachel's gut in the end? She was trying to kill Selene if I remember right.... that last panel that was black with the word " SNIKT" written in bloody letters was awesome!!!
The latest batch of X-books contains an order form for Astonishing X-men along with an X-title of your choice for free ( so 27 dollars roughly for 12 issues of each) a pretty good deal, really. Which title is Claremont going to be writing again?

Uncanny X-Men. also the new Excalibur, which will deal with Xavier trying to rebuild Genosha as some kind of mecca of tolerance.

Funnily enough, Marvel seemingly misspelled "Excalibur" on their own subscriptions ad in this week's comics (it reads "X-Caliber", unless they are changing the spelling for the new version). Thus far, every article I've seen about it has used the "Excalibur" spelling.

Saw this in a recent (maybe last week or 2 weeks ago) All the Rage (rumor column) at www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com.

>> I’m told Astonishing X-Men artist John Cassaday has been looking for trade paperbacks of the “Dark Phoenix” saga. Either John suddenly decided to catch up on some reading or the Joss Whedon scripts he’s been getting have something to do with the classic X-Men tale...

Since this is Rich Johnston's old rumor column, they use the "this rumor has a credibility rating of __ out of 10" thing, and they gave this a:

>> This Has A “Re-Forged in the Flames” Factor of Six Out of Ten

Nope, that doesn't come til later on in #207, which was the first issue of X-Men that I bought back when I was a little kid. I still think that's one of the finest issues of X-Men ever. That whole Claremont/Romita Jr. run is pretty amazing, second only to Grant's New X-Men as far as I'm concerned.

AXM #3, from Johnny Cassady's site.

Quite like that, y'know. Lemon yellow and all.

Also, a much better pic of #1's team:

Bollocks, forgot the solicit:

"GIFTED" pt. 3 (of 6)
The team reunited under Cyclops and Emma Frost, the X-Men are out to astonish the world! But a new threat to mutantkind may mean the end of the X-Men forever! Plus, Wolverine's relationship with a fellow X-Man takes an unexpected turn...

Noncing-up Kitty? Hardly unexpected.

Mananimal to mananimal love with the Beast? Perhaps.

16:48 / 15.04.04
Nooo, not Logan & Kitty! Maybe it's not a romantic relationship with another X-Man that takes an unexpected turn...

Who's to say "relationship" means romantically? Could be Cyclops...

Awesome picture of Wolverine - way to go Cassaday!!! Wolverine could never pounce Kitty could he? I mean is too much of a father figure!!!! But good point Mike - maybe he and Cyke will finally see things eyes to eye....

It's been pretty much cleared up, but I asked Joss why he decided to go with the spandex uniforms, rather than the Grant ones, and he said that it was because Marvel wanted him to. And, he also cited Stan Lee and Chris Claremont as critical Buffy influences, who showed how to make a superteam full of angst, as well as saying that over the course of its run, Buffy went from being Spider-Man to the X-Men.

17:29 / 16.04.04
It seems you have an inside, PatrickMM, so tell Joss most of us are pulling for him and love his work. Everyone keeps referring to the uniforms as " spandex" - does anyone recall that most Superhuman costumes are comprised of '"unstable molecules" that allow the employment of powers such as flames without incinerating their threads as well as a form fitting uniform impossible to duplicate using spandex? If I rememeber correctly, this technology is Sh'iar.

Hardly spandex people!!!!

PatrickMM
17:39 / 16.04.04
Not an inside really, I go to college where he went, and he did a screening of the Buffy musical yesterday, after which he hung around for a long time, answering any questions people had. By the end, it was me, Joss and about ten other people, which was quite cool, so I got to ask him a bunch of things. And yes, they only look like spandex, blame Warren Ellis for that term.

When he was talking, Joss was actually saying a lot of things that were similar to Grant's talk about The Invisibles, like, how the characters sort of took control, and the stories would just come to him and guide him through what had to be done. It was really impressive just to listen to, because he seemed so into the process of storytelling, to the point that he claimed he needed to take pills to get to sleep at night because there were so many stories running through his head.

Newsarama has posted 5 preview pages of Astonishing X-Men #2. You can see the pics here: preview images.

I like Cassaday's covers (particularly the one with Wolverine, and I think he draws Emma and Logan well. However, his Scott, Kitty, and Beast are a little off. Beast, imo, looks like a raggedy version of the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz movie.

Cool to hear Joss' comments on it. Joe Quesada said in an interview that Joss had said he thought it was time for the costumes to return (i.e. that Joe Q. said he and Joss had the idea simultaneously and were in complete agreement about it). ah well....whatever, what's done is done.

I agree that Cassaday's Beast looks a little wonky. And I'm not crazy about the 'widescreen' long thin panel layout in that issue 2 preview....but we'll see.

Some kind soul at Millarworld scanned Wizard's 5-page preview of AXM #1 and posted the images here.

Despite my earlier misgivings, this actually looks pretty good...

Just read the preview today. That line Patrick cited is indeed fantastic. And Cassaday completely sells the entire book on the third panel of Page One. Kitty Is Real.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!

Yeah, Yeah. He also wrote the last episode of Angel. Trust me.

And that preview rocks. You can't front on it anymore. It might not be your cup of tea, but I can't see how anyone can slight its inherent quality and non-hackedness.

Um, Alien 4 is not good, it's bollocks. Judgement suspended on Whedon's X-Book until the fucker ACTUALLY COMES OUT anyone?

17:25 / 10.05.04
Even Joss admits Alien 4 is bollocks! So he's not a movie guy ::shrugs:: don't think of Astonishing X-Men as a movie think of it as a TV show.

diz

Um, Alien 4 is not good, it's bollocks.

no, Alien Resurrection is arguably the best of the series, but because of Jeunet, not Whedon.

Matthew Fluxington
17:00 / 11.05.04
Wow. It's almost totally impossible for me to imagine anyone seriously believing that the first Alien film by Ridley Scott isn't the best film in the series by a million miles.

Anyway, Astonishing X-Men #1 comes out in the final week of May.

Triplets
17:31 / 11.05.04
in order of goodness

Alien
Aliens
Alien 4
Alien 3
