Fair play.

Let me put it this way:

I think what people are reacting to - changes in Kitty, different physique on Scott, the return of costumes, etc - can all be explained by one term: Superconsistency.

The Morrisson run is over. The Whedon run is happening in a parallel dimension. It's a thing unto itself. A new creative team, a new gestalt. A new definition of what it means to be "X-Men".

Everyone is, of course, welcome to take it or leave it. But I don't think anyone will do this run, or themselves, any favours by trying to view it as a "continuation" of the Morrison run, because it isn't.

Personally, I'm still skeptical. But I still haven't seen enough to convince me it'll be rubbish.

Didn't mean to snap at anybody though. Sorry.

Working from what houdini has said... take GM's advice. He has said (can't find the exact quote) that if one chooses to consider his run the final X-Men story, that would be a very good idea indeed as far as he is concerned.

Now, for me, I don't think seeing this as like a "new season with a different director" kind of thing... I mean, yes, things ARE different, but fuck why so much bitching over 2 pages of dialogue? Let's face it out of context 2 pages of Morrison dialogue could sound like shiite too! And IMHO Cassaday's pencils are very nice... and even remind me of FQ a little... =)

T'Pau- If memory serves, I've seen posts that Astonishing is a 12 issue mini series, not a new ongoing, so there's no chance of it going sour... at least not because of another creative team taking over.

houdini- For Scott Summers at 60, check out Earth-X. It's great to just see him as an old creepy codger collecting freaks as Mister S. Even funnier is how he is still in contact with Jean via their mind-link, even though she's dead.

okay. i'm gonaa be honest.
I'm thinking in buying the first issues because of Cassaday's art.
About the costumes: THEY SUCK!

P.S: I never liked Ciclops with that mask. He looks just like a condom.

I'm so excited for this now. All of you still moaning about the costumes are missing the point.

That Emma/Scott cover is probably the best non-Quitely X-Men cover ever. I think Tom, Dizfactor, Chareth Cutestory, and Flyboy are on target and that the "she's holding him back! she's evil! she's blinding him!" people have revealed some unflattering things about their psyche (sexuality?) to the rest of us.

The art looks fabulous. Best X-Men art since Quitely, easily.

I also like that the title of the series is literal!

I think more than ever, sex and emotions is driving force behind the series, and I love that.

Quimper is right on about a major part of Scott and Emma's dynamic coming from her acting like a teacher with him - I'm glad that it seems like that will be explored. They are such fascinating characters when they are together. It's amazing that it's taken this long for a dynamic like this to be introduced to the series. It's so sexy, interesting, and relatable.

I wish you wouldn't go for the psychology 101 swipes, as you do occasionally, Matthew.

But, yeah, the cover is awesome. I'm so glad Joss is using our team.

Complaining about costumes is still complaining about costumes, you know, guys. It's not a discussion I'd have, at any rate.

Why does Cassaday pencil everyone with big Ray Ramone noses? Last time I check Kitty Pryde wasn't a dude.

11:10 / 24.03.04
No, but she is a Jewish girl and probably shouldn't have a tiny super-white model girl nose as most artists draw her.

Tom Coates

Well unless she's a Jewish girl with a small nose, of course.

Buffy and Spike was shit. Buffy after the major arc was shit. I doubt Wedon has it in him to write well any more. Fucking white elephant, man.

I thought Buffy and Spike was brilliant, both his lusting after her in season 5 and their destructive sexual relationship in season six. I wasn't expecting it to go that way at all, and it was a really great surprise. And, what do you mean by major arc? Up to season 5? Because I think season six was one of the best eras of the show.

And, reading this in retrospect, it's really funny to see everyone go from looks awful, I won't be buying this after the issue one cover, to must have after issue two, then back to awful after the preview page. I'm going to side with the fact that it's Whedon and Cassaday, there's going to be some good stuff here.

Just because she's Jewish doesn't mean she has to look like her dad in drag. I know lots of Jewish girls who look like super-white models. And technically that's how she's been portrayed for as long as I can remember.

I agree that everyone looks like shorn Logans/Wolverines with different hair styles, well at least everyone except Hank. Kitty looked the best when she was drawn by Alan Davis, she looked Jewish AND femine.

13:40 / 26.03.04

Yeah, I'm pretty excited to see Davis drawing the X-Men again. Or I would be if we could just zap Claremont with 20 years worth of anti-ageing rays.

Thank you. Alan Davis and John Byrne got it right.

The first seven pages of the Davis/Claremont Uncanny X-Men was pretty good! I want to read more.

I can't believe he brought back Rachel Summers. That's nuts!

I did... looks good, but Scott looks a little beefy. His neck and jaw look quite thick.

And shockingly, that new Claremont/Davis preview does look kind of --- decent! (I'm shocked because when's the last time a Claremont X-Book was actually decent?)

i now that comics aren't supposed to b real time or nething but i think kitty pryde getting younger and more 'school-girly' is a really bad move, i've loved her character since the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine mini series (is that wat it was called, sumthing like that neway) & i think she should stay the same as the angry, fighter kitty pryde that featured in Mekanix (a mini series that came out sumtine in the last 2-3 years), making her into a sweet little mascot makes no sense

also, on a sort of related note, has ne1 else noticed that in a recent issue of marvel previews the teams in all three new x-men lines seem to include wolverine, unless he's been cloned then wtf, and he's wearing that awful costume in all of them as well

I think that sometimes you just have to say "well, regardless of what's been written in continuity, how does a given character work best?" Kitty's been written very, very badly since around 1985. The core of the character is great - the forced, confused evolution of the character as written by a number of different people over the years has taken Kitty very far away from what made her interesting and likeable to begin with. I think it's best to just toss aside the crap stories and try to refocus on what works.

I'm starting to think that they should just pretend that Colossus never died and there never was a Legacy Virus, just so that character can be played with again. Killing him off was so short-sighted.

Seconded.

Peter is a great character. Lobdell's got a thing about offing the Rasputins, just to make it look like whatever crappy threat he's cooked up is serious.

In fact, it was the Legacy Virus that killed both Peter and Illyana, right? If only it'd gotten to bloody Mikhail a little sooner....

Has anyone got comfirmation on whether or not this is a limited series ( 12 issues?) If that is the case, will Whedon's continuity continue in the other books? I am a bit out of the loop, I guess!!!
On the subject of timelines and characters ages: It seems to me that within the last few years it was determined that roughly 10 -12 years has passed in the Marvel universe since its inception in 1963. On that note, if Summers and the original X-men were around 15 or 16 when they arrived at Xavier's school, then they would currently be upwards of 27 -28 years old, depending on the character. Bobby might be more like 26. If Kitty was 13 when introduced in 1980, then she is probably little more than 19 years old now.

It's an ongoing, however Whedon and Cassaday are both only signed for a 12-issue period.

I picked up the Wizard magazine yesterday along with JLA/Avengers #4 ( about freakin' time!!!) Anyway, the article focuses mainly on Whedon's trials and tribulations about getting the gig, and fan reactions to the news. Little is said about his actual plans for the series, although they showcase some of the essential X storylines according to Whedon ( No big surprises here: Phoenix, the Brood, Wolvie mini series '82) The article also sports a nice pencilling of costume designs by Cassady, and a large print of the team shot we are now familiar with showing Hank in bike shorts.

What did he say about the trials and tribulations in getting the gig? Just curious...

Mike-O
15:53 / 02.04.04
To paraphrase, he was initially concerned about making time to write a story at all, but once getting passed that he was worried about living up to both Claremont and Morrison in terms of creating a quality, original and impressive story. He eventually got over that, with the help of Joe Q's encouragment coupled with Claremont expressing that he was a Whedon fan and had hoped that he would get the gig.

Hi,

I've found a preview page from Astonishing X-men #1. Unfortunately, even after reading the faq and experimenting with posting images and links, I'm still unable to do either successfully on Barbelith! Hmph! Stupid html code...

Aw, it's probably because I'm a stupid newbie when it comes to these things. Anyway, to see the preview page from Astonishing (which, btw, has not to my knowledge been posted and/or mentioned here) and other x-books, cut and paste this url into your browser:

http://www.livejournal.com/community/x_men/180108.html

To see the preview pic from Astonishing, you'll have to scroll 3/4 of the way down the page. As for the art itself...personally I'm not grooving on Cassaday's renditions. Scott looks beefy and out of shape. And Beast looks like a scowling cowardly lion from the Wizard of Oz movie.
