I'm just in from a posh dinner and am feeling irritable.
So, I went to Gordon Ramsay at Claridges (paid for by an IT company, I hasten to add). And in fact, they managed to serve me a vegan meal, which is quite remarkable, even if it was just a plate of veg, and even if they then served me creme caramel for dessert.
But, for heavens sake - they charge a fortune, and I'll bet every single person at that dinner is now eating toast. Why is it that the more you pay, the less you get to eat?
Despite just getting a plate of vegetables, I did better than most - everyone else had a tiny slice of ham terrine to start and then two very small bits of fried lamb for their main. It was supposed to come with 'celeriac puree' but that turned out to mean five blobs of white stuff, the size of marbles, round the side of the plate.
It's really odd. I do appreciate the quality over quantity argument, but this was just silly. And I've no doubt it cost an alarming amount.
It was also very uncomfortable to have to tip when I went to the loo, and to have the basin filled with hot water and a towel handed to me.
Are rich people a) very thin and b) incompetent in the bathroom? I think we need to know. |
