Don't get me wrong, I want to see more Invisibles like stuff from Grant myself and don't read Batman or Superman. But I'm a huge fan of Arkham Asylum and the idea of him writing Batman again excites me.
Obiously he's not going to DC to write Green Arrow or some shit like that.

I think Grant's X-Men run is more like Kirby's New Gods than anything else...full of ideas that didn't NEED to be explored by him, since he was tossing them out so fast, if he sat down and went deep into them, it would keep the new ones from flowing. I hope it's handled better by future creators than Kirby's DC work has been...I would love to see someone do a decent story just using a tossed off concept that Grant filled the stories with.

And it makes me feel VERY depressed when I read all the fanboys on Newsarama who are saying they are glad Grant's leaving the X-Men so it can go back to what it used to be.

It used to be utterly unreadable shite.

And the fact that horridly bland and untalented Mark Silvestri is doing the last arc is maddening as well. Silvestri's work can't tell stories (he does Big Posters For Fanwanking) and ALL OF HIS CHARACTERS HAVE THE SAME FACE.

But it's been a helluvaride.

It was going to end sometime.
I haven't been enjoying the book these past few months and I hope there's a good ending for me in this bizarre and bumpy ride.

Who's a good replacement besides Milligan?

Can't wait for We3.

In a way, I'd be very glad if Marvel ended up putting some idiot hack on NXM after Grant leaves, because I'm personally coming to a point where I think it'd be better for me not to have any good reason to read the X-Men anymore.

Same here, maybe for different reasons.

Yep. once GM leaves X-Men that'll be that. Stories, like everything else in life, should have a proper definitive ending it's nice that GM will be providing that.

I can't help but wonder though if he jumped ship sooner than even he anticipated? I mean when he gave that Rich Johnston interiew not too long ago he was up #152 and claimed he wasn't 'headed anywhere at the moment' and of course only a month or so ago Marvel claimed he would be with X-Men throughout 2004 but at this rate his run will end in the early part of next year.

It would be a bit of a shame if he ended up having to leave sooner than he would have liked.

Still things are probably better ths way...

Aye.

I doubt Milligan'll be at Marvel much longer, and X-Men is too straight (in the non-sexual sense, controversy fans) for him.

Adam Warren, who I've touted before on the strength of his Gen13 run, which was pop science fun of the highest order, would be my personal choice.

But I think Brian K. Vaughan is being groomed for the job. Not read his stuff, but he's highly considered in some quarters. Either that or Marvel'll go back down the Harras-era route and rehire a staffer like Fabian Nicieza. Yuk.

Marvel's going quite rapidly to shit, innit?

Actually, Marc Silvestri did some decent art in his original run on X-Men with Chris Claremont way back when - he's never been a particular favorite of mine, but he can be a very competant and versatile artist in spite of how he's been squandering his talents over the past decade and a half.

Mark Millar (who worked in tandem with Grant a LOT at 2000ad, and to great effect, see Purgatory/Judge Dredd: Inferno and Big Dave for examples) is soon to make a "massive commitment" to Marvel.

Sad. I think Marvel and Millar are missing a trick there. But Millar's always been in Granty's shadow, so I can see why he'd not be too happy picking up a book right after him.

All signs seem to point to that overrated hack Gaiman.

The exodus from Marvel is under way, isn't it?

Millar would be wise to get off that sinking ship.

"Sinking ship?"

Fair enough on the comic book side, fluxy, but the big money's in movies, which Marvel are bringing out by the dozen, while all of DC's lucrative properties have been stuck in development hell since the mid 90's.

Yeah, I'm only talking about the comics side of Marvel, which is the only part of Marvel which is truly relevant in this particular forum.

With the exception of Brian Michael Bendis, none of the other major creators at Marvel have anything to do with Marvel's non-comics projects.

Marvel Comics = headed for another era of crap, in a hurry.

DC Comics = quickly becoming the better of the two major companies again.

It's funny, I started that "Who Reads DC Universe Comics?" thread only a couple months ago, and since then I've become a regular reader of the Legion, Lee/Loeb's Batman, and Brubacker/Stewart's Catwoman, along with The Filth and Sweatshop which I was already buying. DC won me back. So now the majority of the comics I buy on a monthly basis in the short term are all DC. The only Marvel comics I'll buy are NXM and X-Statix (which hasn't been out in three months), and I might continue reading the Ultimates if I'm in a good mood on the day when the next issue comes out.

it's Jemas Home Entertainment System, I believe. all those rumours of him trying to pulp MARVEL BOY 2 seem truer than ever. and Grant never really wanted to do an Ultimate FF anyway. after Jemas moves Hollywood. Joe Q takes his place and a new EIC steps over [if Marvel still existts as we know it] Grant may come back to Marvel.

Seconded. X-Fan has been really saddening too:

"HORRAY!!! (INSERT CRAPPY DANCING BANANA .gif HERE) NOW MORRISON IS GONE IT CAN GO BACK TO BEING AN X-MEN BOOK AGAIN (drool)!!!!1"

If none of the X-Men are dying, that means Xorn's going to surivive too, right? I like the concept of a morrison character hanging around the Marvel U a bit.

Again, yes. I thought we might get some kind of Earth X thing, with ramifications of the generational paradigm shift from human to mutant, as that's not possible to deal with any other way - or is it?

If Gaiman can keep his head out of his arse, he writes awesome comics ("24 hours"). Otherwise, terrible faux-gothy shit like the first issue with Death (and I'm convinced Morpheus was a self-insertion).

The X-Men are pretty far detatched from the kind or pop-mythology bullshit that he tends to fuck up on though: if he can just write the CHARACTERS (and not turn Jean into an awful earth-mother goddess type, which I'm very affraid he would)then he'll do well, if indeed he's to take over. But he's a "variable" writer to say the least.

Back in '93 there was a Sandman/X-Men crossover planned, right?

The Falcon
21:38 / 20.07.03
Really? I don't believe that.

Fabian Nicieza writing Lyta Hall or something would've been worth it for the comedy value though.

Morpheus was, like King Mob, a self-insertion/avatar, no question.

Mister Six, whom all the girls

"(and I'm convinced Morpheus was a self-insertion)."

I'd like to think that Gaiman gives himself many self-insertions... I'm not THAt against him, but I couldn't resist.

The new writer won't be Milligan, I think, because Milligan wouldn't know what to do with all those characters. I mean, he an Allred co-created X-Statix, right? Besides, it would be too vanilla for him, I think.

Vaughn would be a neat choice. Only because I really did Y: The Last Man.

Millar can eat me. I have a copy of his Ultimate X-Men #1 script and I'm thinking of shitting on it rather than selling it.

Who else is there? Fabian to my reccolection is not happy with Marvel as they took him off Gambit, I think and cancelled the comic behind his back (honest to God, I have no idea how I know this).

I'm with flux on anticipating Silvestri's return. He did some great wirk back in the day.

Man, I really hope that Gaiman doesn't take over after Grant, because I really would like to go back to a relatively X-free life again within a year from now. I'm not a Gaiman fan aside from the first Death miniseries and a few issues of Sandman, but I know I'd never be able to resist his take on the X-Men. Let's hope this is just crazy rumor and that somebody even worse than Chuck Austen is placed on NXM, okay? Please?

I think soon it'll be back to art-driven books then.

Fabian Nicieza, Chuck Austen, Scott Lobdell, Bruce Jones will be writing 80% of the books.

Flux: Hows is Legion? Do you need fifty year's worth of backissues to follow?

Doesn't anyone read Daredevil or Alias?

Wasn't there a NXM poster that had a tombstone or something which said humanity would be dead by 2005? I always thought Grant would be on until then...

Anyway, something else I don't think anyone's mentioned is that Rich Johnson claimed NXM#151 would feature Sentinels so I think Grant's written his own version of Days of Future Past.

Still saddened by the loss because it's my favorite book right now, I hadn't felt excited about a new book coming out for quite some time, until the Riot storyline.

However, I think once we've read the ending and the new books are coming out we'll have forgotten all about it...

If nothing else Grant gets you excited about his new projects.

i have no idea why the idea of Gaiman taking over NXM is making me physically ill. i was a big Sandman fan back in the day. of course, i was an angsty college goth at the time, so that may explain things a bit.

to be more fair/rational:

i do think he's a talented writier, even if i am going through an anti-Gaiman fit at the moment. Gaiman does best, IMHO, with character-driven stories, which might be good for NXM. however, he's got an unfortunate tendency to wallow in sentimentality and New Agey horseshit. the condescension in his writing has tended to bother me more over time, as well.

the possibility that Girl in the Radiator brought up of turning Jean into an "Earth goddess" type gives me hives. most women in Gaiman's work seem to end up going down that road, don't they?

also, the idea of Gaiman writing Xorn really makes me twitchy. i just keep seeing Gaiman writing an Eastern character with a mystical bent and having it turn into Dream Hunters or something, which always struck me as being more than a little racist ("ah, so, we are so velly mystellious and Olliental!"). honestly, Xorn written by anyone other than GM would probably have me wanting to gouge out my eyes.

Gaiman, IMHO, doesn't really jive with the character or with the setting of NXM, which is much more sci-fi. he's just more geared towards fantasy/horror. unfortunately, i think i'm in the same boat as Flux: i'd have to buy it.

what does that leave us for the rest of GM's run? the rest of Assault on Weapon Plus, Planet X, and the final arc? is that right? does anyone know anything about the Silvestri arc?

Xorn should die.
His book should end the way Animal Man did.
We should have no desire to go back after he's gone.

On a similar note...
I'm still deciding if the post-morrison Animal Man is worth reading. But every time I read Grant's last issue, I really don't want any more stories of Buddy.

Flux = Loves To Hear That Crazy Beat I get the feeling that Xorny might have something to do with the whole universe-destruction thing. I wouldn't bet on him - he may not die, but he probably won't remain the way that we know him right now.

Well, let's see, he has a star in his head which is capable of collapsing into a black hole, and we have Jean grey, who is going to become a goddess. Of course, that could all be resolved in 'Planet X'...

I'm-a getting the feeling that CAPTAIN MARVEL JR. = reworked MARVEL BOY 2.

Rich Johnston reported in his his column today that a Grant-scribbed SPERMAN is likely to be announced at the Chicago Wizardcon.
