The Pulse has just announced that Grant has signed a two year exclusive with DC. He's apparently working on a Vertigo series with Frank Quitely, and a DCU title that will be announced in Chicago. Does anyone know if Grant will actually be at Wizard World Chicago? I don't think I've seen his name on the guest list. Does this mean the return of Aztek? What will happen to the NXM? Let the speculation begin...

The same thing that happened with Judd Winnick is what will happen with Grant - Grant has already made much of the fact that he's very far ahead of deadline with New X-Men. Grant is probably done writing his X-Men run, and all of his forseeable work will be for DC. Which is a good thing - I think he's ultimately better off with DC.

this struck me as surprise after Vertigo turned LeSEXY down. last I heard he was not done with all he had to say on NXM.

maybe this is an exclusivity like Ellis', which made it possible previous announced and current things be published.

if they announce a Morrison/Quitely SUPERMAN pants will get sticky everywhere.

Eh. None of DC's licenced characters are a fucking patch on the Grant X-men. I hope they keep Grant on a leash to a certain extent- if Morrison's given all the freedom he wants then more often than not he'll disappear up his own arsehole. It would be great if he's far enough ahead on his scrips for him to pick up NXM after this is over without the reader noticing he'd been away. But I sort of doubt it. Shit. NXM was what kept me all excited about comic books.

I'm still trying to understand the 'new' quality to NXM. It's just been boring as hell to me.

I'd much rather see Grant at DC than with Marvel. And with Quitely and he at a project together, I don't care of it's the Narcoleptic Adventures of Boring Boy. I'll damn well buy it.

I reckon Millar could fill in for a bit pretty seamlessly if Morrison has sufficient material to just about cover his ass but not quite. This might not affect Morrison's run, at least not yet.

In January in Rich Johnson's column Grant said he had just finished writing #152 and #143 was released this month. Can anybody with a better grasp of comic book script production mathematics guess how many more issues we can expect ?

Although I'll miss NXM, I can't see how this is not a Good Thing™.

Well, is it an exclusive contract in the sense that, while he's still got time to serve on whatever he signed up for with X-Men he'll still be writing that, but if he came to the end of that time or if Marvel offered him another title he wouldn't be able to take it?

And as for how long Grant is writing NXM, he wrote JLA for three and a half years, (not including things like 1 million), so I can't see him wanting to go much beyond issue 162, but I don't have any proof for this, or the terms of whatever contract he has with Marvel.

FYI - From the Scotsman's Mouth - at his Spotlight panel in San Diego Friday night Morrison said his NXM run ends with issue #154 - Marc Silvestri's arc will be his final storyline for X-Men (and Grant says it's the most beautiful work Marc Silvestri has ever done).

So that leaves us with about 11 mmore issues of his run. Let the bitching ensue.

Previews for the next story arc seem to intimate that a member of the team or someone in the mansion becomes a major threat to the safety of the planet at the end of the Weapon Plus arc. He also said that "everybody" will receive their secondary mutations - or at least have "changed" by the end of his run.

He also said the HyperCrisis likely won't happen and that his DC work will remain with low-profile characters (at least at first).

Ah well...if he gets a Superman or Batman project it's worth it.

I really don't.

Well, I'm happy enough about the move.

I dunno, I'd rather see GM do another original series rather then more superhero stuff. I prefer "The Invisibles" and "The Filth" over any of his JLA/X-men stuff (then again I'm not fond of superhero comics as it is).

I think that Pete Milligan is being groomed to be Grant's successor on New X-Men too. They won't give NXM to Austen because NXM is meant for a different audience that Austen can only alienate.

And for the record, I really wish that Grant would stop it with both superheroes and Invisibles/Filth stuff. LeSexy seemed like such a perfect thing for him to do, maybe now it will happen. Grant needs to reinvent himself again - The Filth practically screams that out with every page. The Filth = Grant Morrison on autopilot.

mmm. YES, we definitely need another Filth or Invisibles.

I'm already feeling a bit depressed about Filth ending soon. The art and writing were the most solid I've seen in a long time and there is just not a title like it anywhere. Although I can see your point, Flux. It can be derivative of other Mozz stuff, can't it? That's been the yoke of the Morrison fan from time to time.

Grant leaving Marvel... Although seeing Marvel Boy 2 and Silver surfer would be v. nice, I've been very disappointed with NXM recently. That might change after the Bachalo run, I dunno, but the last few issues haven't really stuck with me as Imperial and E is for Extinction had. The Weapon Plus and international tem visits stuff really turned me off.

And I doubt that Morrison would REALLY do an Ult FF in the end. Besides, what would the point be?

I'd love to see more Aztec. That series was very brilliant. I have all the issues somewhere and it was just an interesting action comic with whacked out ideas. BUT it'll probably be a DC property. Ah well. It will probably be good as well.

His run ends with 154. Single tear, man, single fucking tear. Let's hope they keep this as the mature book.

By the way, if anyone could write a great Crisis book it would be Grant Morrison, as his work on Zenith phase III proves. I want this highly unlikely crossover.

If New X-Men finishes with 154 then I think Grant's run will be looked back on as one full of promise which he never fulfilled. Yes, he outed Xavier and turned the school into an actual school, but I think it's going to be up to whoever follows him to actually write about the X-Corps, the school, the ideas Grant set up with and didn't want to play with.

Oh, and no Marvel Boy 2.

Yeah, I'm a little sad about that - I reckon Marvel Boy is the best thing he's done since the Invisibles finished - the ultimate expression of the Morrison-ised superhero comic..

Aside from that though I think DC still offer more capacity for boundary-breaking weirdness, so, er, good I guess..

I think the reason why The Filth holds such a dear place in my heart is because its the first GM title I've been able to follow month after month rather then jumping on board after the fact (ala "The Invisibles"). Plus its really funny, and coincides with my own explorations of my dark (or is that qliptothic?) side. If you look at it as the Invisibles smaller dark side of the coin little brother, it all works quite well.

Also, I don't know much about comic artists but I liked Weston's artwork for The Invisibles and I really like the job he did on The Filth. I wonder what else this guy has done? And don't even get me started on The Filth's covers (which I prefer to the Invisible covers).

Sypha, we will be seeing more non-superhero comics. As stated at the beginning of this thread, Grant's working on a Vertigo project with the wonderful Mr Quitely.

You know, Gaiman supposedly has another "secret" Marvel project in the works.... he and Granty are good buddies....

... would that not be fucking mindblowing? Only thing that would keep me on the title is that. Fucking end the series after Grant is done, rename it, or put bloody Gaiman on it. That's it.

Damn, I don't want him to go...

I'm not sure why everyone is so sad about NXM ending around 154 - that's about all anyone ever realistically expected, wasn't it? There is no indication that he had to end his story early or anything, we've got about a year's worth of issues left and the story is starting to head towards a conclusion anyway. It's probably going to be a great, satisfying ending, and it seems pretty obvious that people will always rate his X-Men run very highly. I admire the fact that he wants to leave the book while he's on the top of his game rather than trying to become Chris Claremont by staying on forever.

In a way, I'd be very glad if Marvel ended up putting some idiot hack on NXM after Grant leaves, because I'm personally coming to a point where I think it'd be better for me not to have any good reason to read the X-Men anymore. Grant's the guy who dragged me back in! It would be sort of nice to not buy any Marvel comics for a long while.

From comicbookresources.com

"He will be writing a whole bunch of stuff for Vertigo and the DCU," editor Karen Berger said. "The first book he's doing is with artist Philip Bond, 'Vimanarama,' out next spring."

"It's an Islamic sci-fi love story," Morrison explained, "It honors one of the great world religions in a way it's never been honored before."

The title is from a legendary Indian flying machine. Besides "Vimanarama," Morrison will team up with Frank Quietly for a creator-owned Vertigo book next spring, followed by a "big project" with Quietly set in the DC Universe.

BIG SPOILERS!!!

!
!
!
!

I warned you (well, we'd heard about this to some extent before. Maybe it's bs, but it might be true)
.
.
.
.
The first topic discussed was the idea of the self-aware universe he'd be developing in DC. Morrison said that the DCU is so complex and vast, with rules that dictate how things must happen that it's like computing- things will and must happen regardless of a writer's whims. Characters also have their own rules- Batman doesn't kill for example- so the characters dictate what is done with them: they're alive to a certain degree. This "self awareness" will be part of Morrison's work in DC. "I'm going to wake up the DC universe," Morrison said.

When asked about how retcons might hurt or kill the self aware universe, Morrison says he believes they add depth, by offering new takes, and he noted that readers can always read their old issues if they don't like the new perspectives.

The topic of "The Filth," his maxi series at DC Comics, came up and Morrison said it was a story that wrote itself. "It's a scary thing ... had me in it's grip... it's a hymn to immune system."

Morrison's made a name for himself also with his political remarks and believes that the cynical attitude of many fans after the new millennium began is due to one reason. "They're upset because aliens didn't turn up," laughed Morrison.

In terms of the current war against terrorism, Morrison says, "The only way we can make a difference is to make a difference in ourselves."

The conversation inevitably shifted to "New X-Men," which Morrison will be leaving as of #154 and will be destroying the Marvel Universe in issue #150 and #151! He also says that his final issue can be seen as the end of the X-Men if one so wishes.

While Morrison saw "JLA" as a series about gods and archetypal characters with little personality, who were best suited for big tales, the "New X-Men" series is different. He sees X-Men as a book about relationships, where character is more important than plot, whereas the opposite was true in "JLA." The X-Men are to challenge the status quo in Morrison's mind and must always be sexy, while representing the teen years, the harsh trials of adolescence and the tribulations with it.

The character of Beak was also slated to die much earlier but Morrison says that Beak became too special and wrote himself into his current situation. The Scottish scribe added that no X-Men will die in his run but that they will all evolve in some way.

In terms of DC's projects with DC, one of the six will be with Frank Quitely and Morrison admits to having an idea for Captain Marvel Junior, the guy he calls the "blue guy." He wants to do less cerebral work and do more "heartbreaking" work, such as his "Animal Man," which Morrison read recently and said brought him to tears. One of these will be an Islamic sci-fi series and another called "Indestructible Man," a Kirby-esque series. Another series was called "We3," though CBR News must admit to the language barrier potentially causing a mangling of that title.

A fan asked if the JLA could beat the X-Men and Morrison said the JLA would win by Batman telling the X-Men they have problems... And then they would, causing them to loose.

Morrison also offered his cure for a hangover. "Don't drink or live in Scotland all the time and drink."

Another thing kinda worth mentioning from the Q/A is that his 'avatar' in the X-Men comic isn't Charles, it's Emma (primarily) and Scott.
