If it makes you feel better, Orr, it seemed most people were convinced you were innocent up until almost the very end. You were obviously convincing enough that most people bought your explanation of why you would lie about being Bulletproof. Only after the unsuccessful lynching of me was I able to convince the remaining two innocents that you were likely Mafia. I didn't think you were Mafia until after Tez was killed, although I didn't trust you 100% before that. I was lucky in that I was able to trust Lolita and Flyboy very early on, because they essentially outed themselves as Masons, and at one point there was clearly only one Mafia left (until you were turned the same night), meaning that they weren't evil. And iszabelle's story checked out shortly afterwards.

I sent about 5 PMs of yours to Isz after you were toast, and she demanded why I had voted against her... I was only a turncoat for about 3 hours. The Captain set me straight after that. I swear! ...eek. I suck.

Funnily enough, due to the similarity in names between Baz and Bizunth, I found out too much info during the first few rounds. (I was a newbie in my defense, I didn't know what kind of questions I was supposed to ask...)

I still have a lovely spreadsheet with all the votes and whatnot if anyone wants... it really did help in seeing voting patterns or lack thereof.

Orr: Haha! I thought it was hilarious to get the PM you sent to Baz that said, "I can't believe Lolita is really this naive" or something like that, because I realized how obviously I had overplayed it. I'm all, Oh Orr, what do we do? Heh. Sorry about that. But in fairness I didn't get the PMs from Baz until much later, as Todd said, and Todd also can tell you, I felt so fucking guilty that I really did not want to vote for you up until the very end. I wanted to go after that rat bastard, but Todd was dead certain of your guilt for some reason.

What was up with that, Todd?

Anyway, special characters game was fun, though confusing, & it was helped by the fact that some characters were much more special than others. I for one didn't think my role was essentially all that different from a regular villager, and that cut down on some of the confusion.

MAFIA 4 Special Chracter stats - or What the Hell was Going On, Round by Round.

ROUND 1
The vote was tied, but the Governor (Iszabelle) chose wisely in deciding to off Patrick MM, who was MAFIA

The Detective (Biz) asked about Flyboy and received a negative response.
Iszabelle, who was by far the most active player on Day 1, received the attentions of the Fink (Baz), the MAFIA (Stoat and Rat) and the Doc (bjacques).
Because the Doctor and MAFIA chose the same person (Isz) the result was that nobody died during the night.

Also, because Isz was the first MAFIA target, even though the hit failed TODD, the Changeling took on her role and powers, leaving the game with two Governors (although TODD never chose to exercise his powers - probly a good thing as then no-one would ever have been killed.)

ROUND 2
Qalyn was voted to be lynched, but the Governor (Isz) saved him.

The Detective (Biz) asked about Qalyn (negative)
The Fink (Baz) asked about TODD (negative)
The Doctor (bjacques) forgot to protect anyone

That night the Ninja (Qalyn) assassinated Stoatie (MAFIA)
The MAFIA (Stoat, rat) killed the Vampire (Orr) who rose again as a MAFIA member.

ROUND 3
Qalyn (Ninja) was lynched

The Detective (Bizunth) asked about bjacques (negative)

The Doctor (Bjacques) protected Iszabelle again
The Fink (Baz) asked about bjacques (negative)

The MAFIA (Orr, rat) killed Bizunth (Detective)

ROUND 4
Tez (Bulletproof) was lynched

The Doctor (bjacques) protected Iszabelle (Governor) again
The Fink (Baz) asked about lolita (Mason) but was not answered, as all the Detectives were already dead.

The MAFIA (Orr, rat) killed Flyboy Mason

ROUND 5
(TODD) was nearly lynched, but the Governor (Isz) stepped in to save his sorry ass ...

The Doctor (bjacques) protected Iszabelle yet again - this was starting to become a pattern.

The MAFIA (Orr, rat) murdered bjacques (Doctor)

ROUND 6
Orr (Vampire turned MAFIA) was lynched

rat (MAFIA) killed Lolita Nationovna (Mason)

ROUND 7
Baz (Fink) was lynched

rat (MAFIA) killed T.O.D.D.(Changeling turned Governor), leaving himself and Iszabelle as the only survivors, and the MAFIA as the winners.

(Phew! I think that's right: it took me bloody ages to work out. I just hope you all appreciate my hard graft ...)

Oh God, looking back at that reveals what a piss-poor job I did. every time I got a response of innocent from Whiskey I verged on telling the person in question I was a detective but always chickened out due to concerns they were a fink, vampire or changeling turned vampire. Can I just ask the mafia if they had worked out my identity when they killed me, and if so, how?
Additionally, I'd love to take part in the meatspace version of this, just so I can fail even more spectacularly.

Ethan Hawke
12:22 / 18.06.03
so...um, who's ready to try and top the fabulous Whisky P's version of online mafia?

I think the only thing wrong with the online game is that it drags on for far too long. It should probably be limited to people who are willing to vote at least twice a week. That may have prevented me from second-guessing myself so much.

8===>Q: alyn
13:06 / 18.06.03
How can we top it, Todd? I was thinking either a large game with two MAFIAs or actual assassins who will come to your house and kill you.

Oh yeah, also there's lolita's high school game. Trust me, kill the nerds first.

Ethan Hawke
13:14 / 18.06.03
Nerds? What, do you mean like people who bring history textbooks to bars?

Lolita is hedging on doing high school mafia, because she thinks "Lolita High School" would give people the wrong idea.

13:47 / 18.06.03
Heh. In my defense, you didn't see that in my knapsack I also had a sheet of acid, a cheerleader's panties, and a lamp shaped like an elephant that does light up when you pull its trunk.

[snort]

Even if it wasn't "Lolita High" how long do you think it would take for this crew to drag it into the gutter? Seriously, Mr. Vibrator-for-hire, I don't think the name is going to make that much difference!

8===>Q: alyn
13:50 / 18.06.03
So, yeah, the double-mafia game would need like 20 players, and the mafia's goal would be to wipe the other mafia out. The villagers just have to survive. Maybe there's two doctors & a vigilante.

Ethan Hawke
13:55 / 18.06.03
Hmmm....that's a pretty good idea, Qalyn. Would there be any other special characters? I kind of dug the special characters, and with the amount of people dying maybe a governor or two would be necessary. And the changeling/vampire were fun, too.

Would you run it?

Ethan Hawke
13:57 / 18.06.03
I guess the main problem with getting together 20 people is getting together 20 people who will actually play, on a schedule.

Ethan Hawke
13:59 / 18.06.03
And Iszabelle, to whom I am forever in debt, for blowing our chances to win, my character in the last game was not the least bit salacious - it was merely a nod to the practicalities and realities of long-term space travel.

Alphonse commands you!
15:02 / 18.06.03
Wow. I had a look at the game thread for the one that's just finished, and it looked mind-boggling. And now people want to make it more complex? Count me in.

15:48 / 18.06.03
Someone else has already called Mafia 5, but I'll be taking suggestions for a less lurid-sounding high school name or someone who wants to co-host with me because I'm too wussy to do it myself. Unless people don't mind the questionable "lolita high school" or think I should just change my screen name.

I want to play in person, too. I played it a lot when I lived in Florida. And I'm a much, much better liar in person. Seriously. It's like, seamless.

Ethan Hawke
16:06 / 18.06.03
I would play in person, too, but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to contain my laughter when I tried to lie. I'm not a good liar. Though I did convince you and Flux that I had a mechanical dragon tattooed on my back... Do you think you could get together enough people? New Yorkers and their busy, busy, busy lives. I'd probably have to be off somewhere, being cool on the night you'd want to do it.

Maybe it should be "How" High School, and we can all be rap stars who get ahold of a bunch of magic weed...

Todd:
Hmmm....that's a pretty good idea, Qalyn.

I think, like most of my ideas, it's staggeringly brilliant with Pulitzer potential but is not really doable--too many players. In every game so far, only about 10 have actually shown up for work. Speak up, people, who's interested in "Mafia War: Hit the Mattresses!"?

Would there be any other special characters?

I think just doctors. With 6 mafia, I dunno that a governor is warranted. A mafia vampire, who switches sides when whacked(but not lynched), would be totally fukt, but would probly end the game toot sweet.

Would you run it?

Eh? Sure, but would you want me to? I'd probably get it in my head to trick you all into doing something self-destructive, like last game. I have this renegade absurdist/existentialist streak...

What? Who? Lolita High School had dibsies ages ago. I'll grease the motherfucker.

If we want to get totally rid of strategy, when I got the brilliant idea to start PMing Qalyn with unexplained pictures of Rambo during the last game, Todd did suggest an all-picture Mafia. But I think that's more of a thought experiment than a doable game.

And it's OK, I never formally announced my intention to lead HS mafia. I'll do it when no one else has an idea.

I'm sure we could get together enough people. C'mon!! There could be lots of drinking and yelling.

I'm up for another game after ending on the winning side in both games I've played so far. Only problem is I'd likely get lynched in the first round for being such a bastard in the last game. Hm, am considering changing to my real name, anyway. Perhaps now is as good a time as any...

I'm willing to play any kind of game and I've also been considering a Buffy the Vampire Slayer based game inspired by Lolita's High School idea (and Lolita High School is a wonderful name - we can't miss that opportunity).

That was funny--I thought you had pegged me as the Vigilante (I am not dignifying this Ninja propoganda any longer!), especially when Todd sent a picture of Stallone as Cobra. Made me think you were mafia and was the reason I started that whole "lynch me, its for the best" campaign to make you look bad.

Dude, that was Stallone, as Cobra, in German. How badass was that? I scanned it from my private collection of Italian Stallion movie posters. Well, not really.

I also sent Orr some Sanrio art of Keroppi and someone else that read "Other Characters." This was when I was actually mostly believing he was Bulletproof, but he was casting suspicion on me - in thread. And then I also sent him a wonderful picture of Chewbacca shaving his legs.

Really? I thought you just didn't care if you died, which was exactly how I felt. For some reason I had nothing invested in winning or losing this time, and never really attempted to strategize or figure everything out. There's a conversation with Todd and I (and maybe Flyboy) somewhere where I actually suggested trying to lynch the people whose usernames get on my nerves. When I was in the Mafia, however, I was really deadset on winning the game and planning a strategy. Anyone else who's played on both sides have the same experience?

8===>Q: alyn
17:50 / 18.06.03
Well, not exactly that I didn't care, I just thought it was funny. I had my exeunt all ready and everything. And once I'd started it, I didn't see any credible way of backing out.

Hey, has anyone applauded Whisky's stellar performance yet? She's a funny bastard and Cap'n Whisky rocked.

Nice one Whisky!
And I'd be well up for real-life mafioso fun. (When I say "real-life", I don't actually mean killing people and stuff though. Just to make that clear.)

Qalyn: The "two Mafia" idea is classified by Princeton as "Mafia versus Werewolves" and has its own tried and tested set of rules if you want to play it, although it is recommended for games of over 20 because of the massive villager wastage involved. I think it would be a really interesting, fun variation, though, and it would give more people the chance to be special characters as well.

There's a pdf with rules here

http://www.princeton.edu/~mafia/roles.2.21.pdf

and the online explanation here

http://fringe.davesource.com/Fringe/Creativity/Games/Indoors/Mafia/v18.htm

Lolita Yeah, although I found the first game really fun, looking at it in terms of a logic puzzle (or "chess with people" as I tend to think of it now, having seen the amazing machinations that go on) I was pretty detached in terms of caring who won - I just wanted to find out who was what and see if I was right. However, when I was Mafia I got so into it and was so crazy to win that I actually lost sleep over it, and my relationship with Orr suffered somewhat, as he will attest ...

As for Mayoring, I really enjoyed it (nothing like a gruesome death or a long rambling description) and I'm glad other people did too. Provisionally RL Mafia will take place in about a month, once I've got myself settled in my new room and feel able to welcome the great and good of Barbelith into my humble home. If there's anyone London-based who has played it IRL, can they let me know the form, as I've only ever done it online. (How sad am I?)

Oh, I'm still speaking to everybody. I am sweetness and light. I want to wrap my arms around the world and huggle it into submission. I also think that I'm going to take a quick break from the mafia. I've been involved in three games on the run and with work going crazy at the moment I'm going to sit the next one out. If anyone wants a mafia 6 that's a cross between 'Big Brother' and 'My Little Eye' then give me a shout as and when but in the meantime I shall watch from the sidelines and catch up on my sleep.

Sorry to take so long to post. I was (shudder) SLEEPING UNDER THE SAME ROOF AS A MAFIOSO (and one thoroughly engrossed in an--I admit fantastic--pirate game that turned out to have zombies in it too). As WP pointed out, my medical interventions did take a monotonous turn. Partly that was because I was convinced the Mafia would go gunning (or stabbing, strangling, earwigging or bludgeoning with a candlestick or pipewrench) for her once or twice again, and partly that was because I sometimes had to post in a hurry and at least it was a safe bet she was innocent. Otherwise I would probably have saved Stoatie. I told you folks my logic skills were weak.

I'd be up for real-life Mafia if it's on the same weekend as the Subgenius Faith Double-Reverse Crusade (12 July at the Foundry). And put me in for Lolita/Sunnydale High too, though if my player has any responsibility, I'll probably play it as ineptly as this one...

Damn funny game! Thanks WP!
