I think if we have three mafia and one detective in a village of 13, the villagers will need all the help the can get.

And unless I'm mistaken, we're still a couple short of 13....

Anyone else? Speak up, citizens!

In a village of 13 there should shurely be as many goodies w special powers as baddies? I vote 2 detectives and a doctor - and if the villagers win too easily try it again with one. Remember that the mafia have the MASSIVE advantage of knowing who (not) to trust.

Oh, come on, people!!

There have to be a few more of you willing to lose your minds for a little while... willing to be Mafia and stalk innocent villagers in the dark and play innocent during the day, willing to snoop and pry into the doings of your fellow villagers to determine who the malevolent three are, willing to be an intrepid villager and risk drawing down the Mafia's anger or the suspicions of your neighbors as you try to figure out who you can trust...

I'm guessing a lot of interested people don't have net access over the weekend- hopefully today some more people will move into grantsylvania and bump up the population. So it can start decreasing.

Flyboy mentioned to me that he quite fancied it, so I'll PM him and check.

God, I'm tempted, but logic puzzles make my head spin. Plus I'll be at Stoat's place later this week and having to remember who's posting as whom could lead to a murder/suicide (or is that suicide THEN murder? I forget). So I'll just watch you good grantsylvanians turn on each other like rats in a burning shithouse, in true "the monsters are due on maple street" style, for my entertainment. >:-D

So, grantsylvania isn't a one-industry state like Toddsylvania is it? Because if the world market for pudding (or whatever) collapses, nightly murders will be the least of your problems...

That's lucky 13.

Today's Tuesday. I'm leaving things open for stragglers/discussion until Thursday.

Gameplay starts Thursday evening (18:00 EST, 23:00 GMT).

-------------

My first choice for the game play (Choice A)will involve three mafia, one detective and a doctor.
Remember: once the game gets down to 7 or 8 villagers, a single stymied hit could, conceivably, crush the mafia completely. On the other hand, there's enough room for doubt that the doctor could easily be misled. The advantages balance out the disadvantages, as far as the village is concerned.

I could be persuaded into two other options:

Choice B: three mafia, two detectives. Just like the last game. The default setting.

or

Choice C: two mafia, two detectives and a a Fink. There'd be a whole *other* dynamic with this one.

I don't want a game with too many "special" characters. The word "special" is in quotes there because I don't think those characters are nearly as powerful as influential (often ordinary) villagers - the talkers who shift opinions to and fro. They're the ones who direct the lynchings. Remember that, ye unruly mob.

-----

I'm usually away from the board on weekends. I'm going to try to get a lynching vote in by Monday, 18:00 EST/23:00 GMT (the end of the first Day), and get the questions/hits in by Tuesday morning, 10:00 EST/15:00 GMT (the end of the first Night).
In a perfect world, all Days will end on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. But paranoia interferes with our perfect world. The perfect ruler realizes this.

Heheheh.

There's nothing logical about this puzzle.

I think the more variables and uncertainties, the better, so I vote we play the Fink variation, even though it *might* give the Mafia a slight advantage. Failing that, the first suggested version (i.e. detective and doctor).

If we go with the doctor, we have to clarify the WIKI to answer the following questions:

1.) Does the person under the Doctor's protection know that they are protected?

2.) If the Mafia try to whack the protected character -
(a) Does the village find out that the Mafia tried to assasinate that particular character and failed?
(b) Does the Mafia get another chance to whack someone else that evening?

3.) If the Doctor is lynched or whacked, is a list of hir protected players revealed? Is her status as a Doctor revealed?

Whenever I've played this in real life, the mafia were chosen at random (by passing out cards, or whatever) and whoever was the first killed oversaw the game. How are the mafia chosen by the Mayor? Because obviously certain teams work better than others. Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else.

lolita: Players are chosen by Mayoral fiat - too hard to corral players & "deal cards" online otherwise.

Mayor Emeritus Todd: 1.) Does the person under the Doctor's protection know that they are protected?

2.) If the Mafia try to whack the protected character -
(a) Does the village find out that the Mafia tried to assasinate that particular character and failed?
(b) Does the Mafia get another chance to whack someone else that evening?

3.) If the Doctor is lynched or whacked, is a list of hir protected players revealed? Is her status as a Doctor revealed?

1. It seems to me that the person protected shouldn't know for sure.

2. It also seems to me that the Mafia should just fail, fail, fail. Which means that of course, the village will know that they failed in general (no body in the morning).

I'm less certain about whether the village should know who the attempt was made on. Knowing will give villagers an edge. But in the card-game version, it's kinda clear that the villagers *don't* know. I'm leaning towards letting the village know that Villager X was almost killed, but saved by the doctor. This is mostly a hold-over from Role Playing Game "realism," really, which doesn't necessarily apply here.

3. A doctor, once whacked or lynched, will be revealed as a doctor. The question of protectees being revealed is contingent on whether they're secret in the first place. I'm leaning towards them not being secret in the first place. It's not written in cement yet.

how often will we need to be online for this (I'm trying to save money... )

OK, I'm sending out the list to the lucky 15.

Oh, right, weren't the Maggia in Spiderman or something? Or general Marvel Universe baddies? I read something about Stan Lee not wanting to garner the attention of the real Mafia. Or, suddenly have to portray them as "The Legitimate Businessmen's Social Club"...

Can the villagers choose whether to (remotely) lynch the no-shower instead of the nominated lynchee?

I think that would be cool - give the scapegoat a last, desperate chance of salvation. Like Christ and Barabbas, kind of thing. Except without comparing Flyboy to Christ.

At this point, I'm willing to entertain a substitute for Enamon. I haven't heard from him since the game thread started.

Any takers?

This opening will only last until the next vote (the NIGHT) - too disruptive otherwise. If there's no sub, or Enamon doesn't show up, we'll just go ahead with an even number. If there are to be any changes in status, affected players will be contacted by PM.
