Just finished, so these are initial thoughts only:
Much better than I was expecting, though I thought the showdown at the end was a little too Harry Potter for my liking. Much of the rest of it read rather as if she'd been reading a lot of the better fan-fiction - and oh my, there are some very slashtastic bits in there, especially for Snape/Potter fans.
I thought there was a lot less waffle in this one than in the last, despite the length, and a lot less Quidditch, which is probably a good thing. I liked the Ministry stuff, and wish it had not been so (apparently) easily resolved - perhaps this is something which will come up again in the next book. I also wish J.K. Rowling didn't rely quite so heavily on absolute demonisation of her bad characters - though it was nice to have less concentration on the Malfoy aspect of eeeevil, it's just an undercurrent in this one.
I really appreciated stroppy hormonal adolescent Potter - much prefer him like this. Lots of lovely angst. Though, as usual, the grief bits didn't quite ring true, but it is Rowling, can't expect too much...
I am a terrific geek. Surely I can't be the first person to have finished? |
