Precisely. If you believe in democracy, then how can you square that with feeling glad that the will of the people is so regularly bilked by their elected representatives? Do we as a nation need to be protected from our worse and more punitive instincts? If so, why not just bring the damned thing back and have done with it? How can we say with confidence that capital punishment is the mark of an uncivilised society?
Personally, I'd have to say that I stand by the arguments I put against it earlier on - at base level, giving a state the power to kill its members, with premeditation and without any apparent threat, sounds like an unwise move. But it raises some interesting questions about rule by representative, that are unfortunately probably outwith the scop of this thread. |
