The best thing about this comic was that it was exactly what I expected it to be.
When I heard that Milligan and Bond were doing a book called Vertigo POP!: London! I thought it was just going to ooze shiny pop fun and this looks like it's gonna deliver.

It's a familar wee story, but Milligan skews it just enough for it to seem fresh and funny.

Plus Philip Bond is a tiny god, and we really don't see enough comics from him. His style is just so robust and expressive and fun and YAY! basically.

Finally got hold of it last week and really really liked it. Indeed, I liked it so much that I was almost disappointed when the magic thing came in, with writing of this quality I would have been happy for four issues of the guy walking round his mansion occasionally scratching his arse. I'd be disappointed if Milligan doesn't namecheck The Osbournes at some point.

Bond's art was the best I've seen by him, really well done. But I still hate the stuff he did for 'The Invisibles'. Funny that.

Anyone pick up issue 2? I enjoyed it. Rather than chug ahead with the bodyswap, Milligan takes a step back and further clarifies how fucked up a concept it is (as if we didn't already know) increasing the depth of the characters. And spiky haired nude Philip Bond characters, as well.

yep issue 2 just as good as issue 1 - and all those lines that a lesser writer would have just thrown out as one-liners in issue 1 are revisted in issue 2 and expanded upon.

Maybe not so funny - those aren't pure Bond comics, he's just finishing up Warren Pleece's breakdowns, which explains why it looks like Bond, but not quite.

Um, Mr Pleece is back for issue #3. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I guess.

Is Philip Bond actually finishing Warren Pleece's breakdowns on issue three? It looks to me as if Pleece is inking Bond's pencils.

For one thing it says "PHILIP BOND and WARREN PLEECE - Artists".
Secondly it just looks like Bond. Those Invisibles issues were full of horrible stretched bodies, like when Bond drew Doom Patrol.

A while ago I saw some footage of Ray Davies performing at the Jubilee / 'Party In The Palace' shitfest, and jesus - if that's not who Rocky Lamont was based on, it's uncanny: Davies nowadays looks *exactly* like that, same crap hair and all. It's perfect.

Haven't got #3 yet, but the cover of #2 has to be one of my favourites of 2002 - not just because it's so beautiful and sexy and BOND!, but also because it's a neat trick if you've just read issue 1 - you assume that's Rocky in there being freaked out by Zoe's attention, but in fact that could be just Sean being freaked out by her borderline psycho-ness. It works both ways. And the pink! And the Eye!

Also awesome: the Dave Stewart gag; the characterisation of Zoe, Hoxton art brat; the incredibly specific double in-joke that is the "Codling Gallery" (the Jopling Gallery & Neil Codling, ex-of Suede); that fucking terrifying hallucination Sean has - yes, these people *are* like wolves, and that is how they're looking at him; "you're a fookin' animal Lamont!"

I'd love to, actually. Got a coupla friends need visitin', too.

Unfortunately, at present, I have no money and no (regular) job. Because I suck.

I may move to Glasgow to do some sort of postgrad stuff eventually (like late this year.) The city breathes comics which I like, and is generally boss.

Vertigo Pop! Glasgow by Grant 'It's like a wee jobbie' Morrison can surely be not far behind this (...desperate attempt to return to topic.)

You could - I don't know enough about Glasgow. But my formative plans for Vertigo Pop! Dundee (hahahahhahahhahahahh....ohhhhh. I actually really like Dundee) should be considered officially announced. Barbelith exclusive!

Hmmmmm. I wonder....

Absolutely, he even seems to *move* like Davies.

This is so perfect its unbelievable. I *love* it so much. In my universe, all comics will be like this.

Vertigo POP! Dundee wouldn't be a patch on Vertigo POP! East Kilbride, which I would fucking love to write.

It would be the worlds most desperately glamourless story! Glasgow may be (as sugested in Yawn's Morrison interview) a city swamped in fiction, but what about EK?

No fiction at all! Well, hardly any... it would be a fucked up little tale that would somehow take in the Jesus and Mary Chain, Ally McCoist and George Orwell (siting in Hairmyers hospital, of course). It would be brilliant I tells ya, brilliant.

Or possibly not... *sigh*
Erm... yeah. Sorry about that.

I havent had the cash to get Vertigo POP London #3, but I'll be picking it up tommorow. I canny wait!

First two issues are among the best Milligan stuff I've ever read. Bond's been on top form too. Truly a comic made in heaven, no?

What's the next city in the lineup for vertigo then? Somewhere in southeast asia, right? Have any other specific locations/writers/artists been announced? I'd love to see 'Pop: New York' done by Paul Pope.

Thread rot (well, I started it...):

The Westy? Ah, Dundee's worst boozer.

I'd just write about schemes and rabbit-stroking trance. And then contrast it with the consumerist pseudo-glamour that's taken over the town centre.

2 Malls?! Madness.

I almost feel as if they're going to learn the whole body-swapping thing was a McGuffin and that it actually IS some kind of psychosis on their parts - completely unbeknownst to them, revealing all kinds of shit locked up in their psyches about how they truly feel about things.

We've got one issue left and a whole lot of dark shit hanging about - I'd imagine that Milligan will find a way to bring things back up - Not necessarily to Status Q, but a happy approximation of normalcy.
