We're trying to piece together the Sniper mystery at the Magik forum

Just thought you'd like to know that the Magicians are looking into the sniper situation in the Eastern USA. Interesting theories. Thought those of you who don't visit the Magik room might find it fascinating.

Can't imagine why the rest of the board treats the Magick like the short bus...

Oooowwwwwtch. That was kinda harsh.

Does "the short bus" have the same connotations in the UK as it does in the US?

All right, folks, the race is on. Magik and Headshop are already in the running. Can the Comics forum be far behind?

The first Barbelith forum to solve the mystery wins... oh, I don't know... some sort of dubious fame.... and matching t-shirts. yes, matching t-shirts. I'm buying.

Personally, my money is on the Creation forum, where I'll personally be starting a one-sentence-at-a-time story that will attempt to solve "The Mystery of I-95 Sniper" through collective imagination.

1) Spam.

Sorrta. But since there are many many people who don't come down to the Magick much in case we smear them with Nutella and feed them frogs, it's sometimes profitable to chuck a thread in the way of traffic. I myself have done so in the past, without too much fisticuffs ensuing, except that the Conversation is a much better place for that sort of thing than the Headshop (where I'm guessing this thread was originally started).

2) Irrelevant

To the Headshop? Sadly, yes. But with many new folk fetching up on these shores there will be some finding of feet (and treading on of toes).

3) No frickin' topic abstract.

Indeed. And no link to the thread in the Magick, either. Slap wristies.

Can't imagine why the rest of the board treats the Magick like the short bus...

The really sad thing is that the Magick, flawed though it may be, is the best thing of it's kind on the net. Maybe a greater variety of input would help, along with a corresponding degree of tolerance from some of the big Magick figures for those who haven't read every single Llewllyn publication in existance? Just a thought...

Many, many moons ago, when Barbelith was just a Barbeling,I remember there wasn't all this elitism going on...nor the cry of STAY IN YOUR OWN FORUM.Most of us were brought here by THE INVISIBLES but stayed for THE MAGICK FORUM.

And now, it's the SHORT BUS?

Magick has always been the most tolerant to it's contributers,if I'm not mistaken.

Sigh.

One question: if I come down to the Magick, will you do this to me please?

To be fair, though, it has gone a bit quiet in terms of forward motion in a magickal stylee. It's not that there isn't a lot going on, it's just that there's a fair bit of old ground being gone over, laurels rested upon, etc etc.

There are lots of cool and exiting people here who I belive could really shake things up down in the Magick. New ideas, fresh voices, innovation... Who's up for a kick around?

Besides, Morocco Mole already solved the mystery in the Switchboard. It's Osama bin Laden.

I like the turn the thread in the Magick's taken, though... you don't seem to be arguing as much as us, therefore giving you something of an advantage...

I'm not entirely sure myself; only that The Rock uses it to describe the travel arrangements of other wrestlers. I imagine it to be the preferred mode of transport for the special children.

But what about double agents who hang around in - no, don't say it! - more than one forum?

Film, TV and Theatre is having stuff couriered to it from Head Shop and Magick. The Comics lot appear to have to stuck on a fanboy hangup. And I'm watching Dirty Harry again. Because it's so relevantin this media-fixated age.

So Haus, you're saying the Magick are like the special children? Surely the Magick (to use an analogy you seem to like) are school prefects who know how the world works when you don't, and have the inside track to the Headmaster, and an unending supply of magic mushrooms. You really, really want them to be your friends, but they're too cool for you.

And why are you using phrases you don't understand, sweetie?

a) I am underplaying my understanding for comic effect.

or

b) I am attempting to reach out to our American brethren by adjusting my idiom accordingly

or

c) All of the above

As for the rest - no, I am not saying the Magick are special children. If anybody around here ever read the words on the screen rather than inserting the ones they like more, they might have noticed that I am saying that the rest of the board *treats* the magic like special children, and that spamming the Head Shop is not a particularly brilliant way to prevent this.

I would add only that if your aim at school was to be friends with the prefects, and if your belief was and is that to understand how the world works all one needs is a prefect's badge, then that is entirely your affair. But it is hardly a necessary or indeed a necessarily desirable ambition.

And, in our own small, subtle way, we are all doing magic by kicking this thread around the entire board. I vote it goes to Comics next.

Nah, I'd vote Film/TV- it's got that whole Dirty Harry vibe to it, it WILL ONE DAY be a movie, there's a movie just got cancelled because of it, and Sky Movies Premier (I think) have decided to be tasteful and show "Summer of Sam" tonight.

Isn't it a bit presumptuous to conclude what the rest of the board is thinking?

Let's face it, that was quite a jab at the Magick. No matter how we use the euphamism of "special", it is implied that those who frequent Magick are slow, by the term "short bus". Now, that just doesn't apply to most of the Magick crowd, maybe it applies to me, but not everyone.

There are so many very talented and erudite magi that contribute to the Magick as well as other areas of Barbelith. Can we all remain united here and not start Fora Wars? All of us here have something to offer Barbelith, seeing as how no one, but no one, knows everything about everything. If you do, the you must be God! In that case, we are hunting you down, in the Magick.

Mordant is entirely right about the MAgick being the best of it's kind on the web, but then couldn't we say that for Barbelith in it's entirety?

In my limited experience, I certainly would - new thread! - but I am by no means a lone voice in suggesting that the Magick is marginalised and treated with distrust, uninterest and/or amused contempt by people who might frequent every other forum. It's why I am trying to post in the Magick once a day at the moment, per Exp's suggestion. Tom himself has commented on the isolation of the magick.

Also, I think certain flamewars extending into the policy have given it a bad taste for some people.

But, if the only experience of the Magick for thos who avoid it is the memory of those unedifying flamewars and the odd hubristic spammer, the image of the place is never going to improve. I really don't think this position is either controversial or insulting.

And May - I implore you, *read what I wrote*. It is just at the top of the page there. At no point do I suggest that users of the Magick *are* special children, only that the Magick is often perceived as a repository *for* special children. I believe this position not to be inordinately presumptuous when it is supported by several years of experience of Barbelith and many discussions with its members both on and off the board. And if people continue to refute brilliantly what I wrote in their i-mag-in-a-ti-ons, rather than reading the fairly short number of words I actually employed, I am likely to become a very snippy little Haus indeed.

Nobody wants that.

May - the epithet "slow" applies to you about as well as the epithet "passive" applies to Mike Tyson.
Barbelith is indeed a pretty fantastic place - I don't mind the odd jab at the Magick, after all believing in it in the first place goes somewhat against the grain of our culture/education etc.

It may look like a short bus but what THEY don't know is inside, it's got reclinable, velour seats, kickass stero, whirlpool bath and crystal chandeliers!

Shave it anyway you like it Haus. I have read your post, do not patronize me. I am not i-mag-in-g anything.

I am simply suggesting that we treat this place with some respect and not create divisiveness.

You are right about starting a new thread, this isn't the best place to start critiquing any Fora, but hey, should have thought of that before your comments were made in this thread about the Magick.

Tell you what, May. You demonstrate that you have a) read and b) understood my post, and I will stop patronizing you. I will also stop saying "i-ma-gin-a-ti-on" like Elmo.

My posts in the Magick show, I hope, nothing less than respect for the intelligence and competence of those who post there. After a lengthy period of basically having ignored it completely, I am wondering why I, and many others I know, *do* ignore it completely. And I think that one reason is that there is a perception of it as a home for wingnuts and dullards. Which perception, unfair as it may be, is not helped by actions like spam turning up in other fora saying "come to the MAgick and make $$$ FAST with HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE that gives you a LEGAL ERECTION!"

Or, to put it another way, it was not a jab at the Magick, it was a jab at Jack Denfield.

Wow. I have had to explain the same short sentence twice. I feel like I'm trying to seduce Posh Spice...and that ain't a good feeling. Not nohow.

I think it was probably well-meant, though... but Haus is right in that Conversation is the place to do stuff like that. After all, EVERYONE comes here, don't they?... don't they? ...guys?

Finding of feet, etc, is not always an instantaneous process. And Magick DOES have that kind of a rep. I read it, I very rarely post there. More because I often feel I have nothing to add, or due to my relatively infrequent readings of it, it's already been said by the time I think of it.

Isn't this "Magick=ghetto" thang one of those thangs that just KEEPS popping up every couple of months?
