So if a thread veers off topic it gets deleted?

Even though where it has gone might be interesting?

Can't you just change the thread title?

What Flux and Lozza siad.

And, Feareth, it's not as though you have to read the shit that stomps all over yr favrit writers' run. Yep: X Statix & NXM certainly do piss all over Planetary. But I appreciate, Jack, that it's "the principle of the thing"....

Hey ho.

I used 'we' with a qualifying 'if'. I also said 'which I do'. Note first person pronoun there, chief.

I'm hardly martyrising (?) myself; that's a ridiculous assertion.

Ho hum. I think Planetary is excellent, actually.

I enjoy going and fighting my corner aganst a consensus there.

(*petulantly*) Hey, man, it's a free world - and you can't stop me.

Nah, there's no martyrdom there. No painting yourself as the underdog, and Big Bad Fear beating up on you. No no no no no no no. How silly of me.

Here's the thing, though—you're not the underdog. Your likes and tastes rule the marketplace. There are more shared-universe franchise books than there are self-contained works, and they sell in much higher numbers.

You've got what you want, in great abundance. Lots of people must agree with you—more than agree with me, anyway, or the shit I like would be outselling the shit you like.

So I must be the one who's wrong. So you've got nothing to defend or excuse.

You win.

But, can I just refute some inaccurate presumptions made about me first (leave it here a couple of days and/or put it on the corporate superheroes thread - if you would be so kind.) I like and buy 2-4 corporate superhero monthly titles just now (I am aware this is considered unusual by the 'general public', but then so is buying Planetary and starting fights on internet messageboards about comics.)

This costs me £10 a month. It is hardly a culture bonanza, and is money I would otherwise spend on fags/drink, etc.

I like a dose of superheroes (the ones which I like tend to be politically/culturally radical - perhaps I'm wrong in that reading, but hey...) Too many comics fans beat themselves up for being just that (look at letters pages in CI,) and there's unhealthy (in my opinion) self-hatred in my image of the 'fanboy'. Which if you read Planetary and post on messageboards you are. So I am. I am not, however, a 'geek'. There is a difference.

I'm not entirely sure why you're so annoyed Mr. Fear. I like a small percentage of a type of comic which is, I agree, suffocating a large sector of the industry (and ruining your self-image.) Planetary, incidentally, is as much about superheroes as, say, Fantastic Four or Challengers of the Unknown. I bought FF#60 today for 20p and really enjoyed it, incidentally. I am now considering giving Mark Waid's run a trial few months. Alongside Planetary, if that ever comes out again.

Too many superheroes make me feel sick like too many sweets, though. Ah, the sweet smell of compromise....

Go see my post on the "corporate heroes" thread (or any of Jack's posts on this subject).

I'm not sure Mr. Fear objects to superheroes per se - it's the "corporate" part that really bothers him.

What? Like AOL/Time Warner's 'Planetary'? Can't get more anti-corporate than that, eh?

(I like Planetary, incidentally)

To return to the topic at hand, an amusing (or not) tale:

I was in my nearby city (Dundee) library, approaching the graphic novels section, when I saw a curiously pear-shaped, bespectacled young man reading the (awful) 'JLA/Titans: The Technis Imperative'. I waited for a short while for this manchild to register my presence - for he was standing in front of the small two shelves which house the objects. As I waited he emitted an unpleasant-sounding fart, and looked up. Clocking me, he said "Sorry." with a simpering, half-naughty, half-ashamed grin. This perp was in his mid-twenties, by the way.

My disgust was further enhanced by the thought: "Am I like him, in any way? Please let me not be." and the worrying rejoinder: "You've read that comic."

you never done a smelly fart before? shit least he apologised...

i love them. i want to love them all. we spent a chunk of the day being a bit mean abut Makeitso the trekkist in the next office, and i would like to say sorry. to any geeeks, fanboys or whatever the fuck they're called, i want to love you all.

It was the manner of it.

Anyway, I'm the one that has meaningful dialogue on Hero Realm. My feelings about fanboys are conflicted (see above.)

glassonion
18:37 / 03.09.02
then that's fine. i too support the abolishment of agressive flatulence. what do you mean meaningful dialogue? might i be able to form meaningful and apologetic links with the pear-men if i go into the hero realm? would a bit of anonymous moral support ['Yeah well done! That's a really good point! I think Login would do that.'] be of any good?

The Falcon

Now, now, tetchy.

I like Hero Realm and I don't care. (Similar to Kim Deal's mantra on drugs.) I do argue character and continuity with my pals there, yes. Which is, to me, interesting. I love comics. So do you.

glassonion

didn't mean to be tetchy, honestly want to know - is the chat there about which of logan's claws is sharper? not taking the piss but i reckon i might like it there. might even have a look myself.

The Falcon
23:17 / 04.09.02
No, honestly, have a look. It's much better than 'MillarWorld' or Comicon, for example. I do honestly like most posters there; although, there's one guy who is almost rabidly upset about Bendis' 'Daredevil'. And, yes, continuity and characterisation are watchwords for some - but I can understand that.

I really enjoy posting there; not much about which claw is sharper, though - alas. It's strange how these two messageboards, in my reception by posters, are some parts alike - and some different. These are the first messageboards I've posted on.

'Hero Realm' is fun, honestly; I like talking to people who disagree with me. It's one way to learn.

Jack, have you actually read a sizable amount of NXM, or do you dislike it on principle?

Jack Fear

I haven't read any X-MEN in ten years or more.
I've never read anything by Joe Matt, either.

I neither like it nor dislike it: it simply holds no interest for me.

Back to fanboys.

I think it's perfectly possible to like comics, even corporate comics andnot be fanboy. Obviously it all boils down to definition.

Fanboy: someone with sticks with a given comic book based on a love for the characters and not a critical judgement of the creative team.

That counts me out then.

Paging {mod}, paging thread killah {mod}.

Milan Kundera said something to the effect that we hate things that are in poor taste -- he called it kitch, I might call it quiche -- because they reminds us of our mortality. Fanboys, do not go gentle into that good night. Or something. The rest of you comics people should just take a chill pill -- the industry counts on those fatbeards way more than it counts on you.

I should give a prize to the person who can find the most misquotes in one of my posts.

Here's my (re)definition of fanboys (no offence intended): if you post your opinions on a messageboard about comics, I think you probably are one.

Fanboy has uses in computer-gaming terms as well; I remember one of my pals insisting another 'show his fanboy credentials' on a shoot-'em-up.

So what? It's just a term, another label - I accept it. I'm a Morrison/Milligan fanboy to the very hilt. And...?

However... I am neither fat nor have a beard. Brilliant term, by the way - anyone care to venture the etymological origins?

The Natural Way

I coined the term fucking ages ago, under another suit, after the hell that was Bristol Comicon. Since then, I've refrained from mentioning this little detail whenever someone mentions the word's origins, because I've been repeatedly informed that I had nothing to do with it. Glassonion and I enjoy sticking words together: this one took, and some people seem to think it's been around forever.

Kids, you know _nothing_ 'bout fanboys if you've never had a brush with mangamaniacs.
Imagine thirtysomething 100kilos+ university dropouts dressed like Sailor Moon, jumping around screaming their fave heroe's catchphrase.
Or weirdoes trying to tell you that "Rapeman" (a series about a contract rapist - he'll rape your ex to give her a lesson) is all about communication failure in modern couples.
And I could go on for ages.

The only way to get rid of the guys is to start developing a serious interest in matters oriental - including comics - as they won't get caught dead at a serious university course, conference or exhibit.
They consider themselves above such things.
