I've lost my way in this thread, so apologies if this has already been suggested, but thatnks to Qalyn's 'Hello' thread, I've now got

Newts and Lizards

in my head.

newts and lizards doesen't really work on the strictly taxonomic grounds that newts are Amphibians while lizards are lizards ... although some newts and salamanders retan juvenile features throughout their lives... a metaphore that could probably be extended to barbelith, but it seems a bit overly complex

I know. I still like it, though.

Given that this is only my second post, I'm probably not particularly qualified to be weighing in on this discussion, but... having a set number of posts before someone graduates to the inner sanctum might encourage people to post just for the sake of reaching the next level quicker. I guess the already mentioned restrictions on the number of posts, and pre-mod would mitigate this somewhat, but how about having a set length of time before someone qualifies? Maybe x weeks with a minimum of x posts and a maximum of x rejected posts in that time? Or am I making things too complicated?

How about you're a member until you've reached a certain number of posts and then you become a Pirate or a Ninja (users choice) when you've reached that number?

Moderators could be Mod-Ninja/Mod-Pirate as they see fit?

Just a thought.

That makes a heck of a lot of sense. I'm 100% in agreement.

Ah yes but then there would be no sneaky attacks by ninjas and no wading in yelling in drunk voices by pirates. Where's the fun in having your affiliations advertised.

You could always go undercover I suppose. That's perhaps not taking this as seriously as I should though...

Well, I've got over 200 posts now and I think I deserve to be an official ninja. Or pirate. Whatever, really. Any living thing except a hippo, duck or penguin, preferably with superpowers.

Oooh, ohhh, oooooOOOOOH! They have a cool thing at urban75! They can choose what their little tag is - so one poster has 'curmudgeon' and another has 'resident' and another has 'whiplash girl' - little baby descriptors under their names. Could we have that? Could we? I mean, you could have 'apprentice' or 'member' or whatever until 30 posts and then choose your own!

PPPPPLLLLLLEEEEASE, Tom?

Yes! Nick's idea please!

Choosing one's own title seems most fitting given the radical degree of creativity expressed by members of this board.

I vote for Nick's idea.

That's actually a really nice idea.

It does sound truly fab.

And it might encourage us to refrain from such long usernames...

Neat. So in the beginning you get a pre-fab (-ricated, not -ulous) designation, and then after a time you get to make your own. You get to be self-determined. Sort of maps over the process of having your posts pre-moderated and then being let loose on your own, if that's still in the works.

In which case, it would be nice if the designation for new members could be non-derogatory and non-hierarchical...? Something plain, like "member" might do?

If that happens, can we call new members "salt"?

Cuz it's just like cooking! You always need salt!
But salt is kind of, well, pending approval of other ingrediments.

You realise, of course, that most people who find themselves being called "salt" won't know what the heck you're on about, and will therefore assume that it's some strange and cryptic insult. Some of them will cry "Lizard".

We're The Great Old Ones Now

My day is not complete until I have induced a complete stranger to cry 'Lizard'. It gives me a warm feeling.

You get extra points if you can get them to do it without an actual lizard, and extra bonus chortles if you achieve that without using the word yourself.

It is not the title that will determine the course the boards take but rather the powers associated with it. Who can start a new topic? In which forum? Number of posts is a poor sort of credential as it lends undue weight to the mere act of utterance, and thus to the voices of those with unfettered web access, few responsibilities, and the will to post.

Such as myself.

fred has a point. I mean, if yr not careful, you'll end up with a board full of moi.

Oh, wait. How was that a bad thing? Run it by me again...

If it had gone topsy-turvy, that'd mean we could all choose names from the savoy operas. Pirate Kings or Lord High Executioners?

fred: there are other mechanisms under consideration to give the board a degree of self-protection and make sure it maintains a high standard. This is an aesthetic or mood-based issue, more than an out-and-out defining quality of a poster. Any registered poster can post to any forum, and anyone can start a topic. See other threads in this section for discussions of the more structural aspects of the board's identity, and the changes Tom's been considering.
