When the board moves to its next level, regular posters that have been ratified and welcomed by the rest of the board will be the people that control the spirit of the board - and newcomers will have to earn those rights with time... The old terminology for this was 'member' and 'junior member', but I'm uncomfortable with that. What I'm thinking about now is something like 'citizen' and .... well, that's the problem. I haven't got a word for it. 'visitors', 'tourists', 'xenia', 'associates', 'immigrants', 'asylum seekers'?

'Probationer'? Sounds rather institutional, but I have a thing for that kind of thing.

Anything suitably divisive and elitist, of course. So long as I'm on the right side of the fence.

I see that yr going for a consistent logic, but why not just use Citizen and Junior Member? Junior Member isn't very insulting, not the way 'tourist' or some other suggestions are, and doesn't give the person a feeling that they are just stopping by - I think "visitor" and names like that make it sound like the person really shouldn't be posting much and has a limited welcome. Junior Member encourages people to eventually become a full member/citizen.

Immigrants? Petitioners? (based on the assumption that they really want to become fullfledged members...)

Caterpillars? Pods? Plebes? Proto-lithers? Acolytes? Interns? Trainees? Fresh meat? Debutantes?

Give me a couple of hours, and I can come up with something really silly...

I say we go with Loomis suggestion on the grounds that it is the funniest. It also serves to acknoweldge and dismiss the elitist trap. What am I saying? It's just funny.

How about Chickens and Eggs?

But in order not to smugly resolve the age old dispute of which came first, can we have it so that the label will change at random; that is, can we make it so that sometimes you'll be logged in as a chicken and then maybe the next time you log in--POOF--you're an egg? We can click to see how often a person has posted, so what do we need these labels for anyway?

butterflies and caterpillars

you can even have an inbetween stage where you stick someone in a cocoon! Hey moderators could be butterflies and new members could be caterpillars and people who've been around a while but aren't moderators can be in their cocoon's!!!

They're here, but they're not yet Citizens (with all the attenmdant rights and privileges).

Or you could use the Robert Heinlein/STARSHIP TROOPERS paradigm and have Citizens and Civilians...

I agree, largely because there will need to be a certain cooling of temperature in the infernal regions before I recognise Jack the Bodiless as 'master'

The caterpillar-butterfly suggestion captures the board's original focus on the Invisibles comic book.

I like the citizens-resident of all suggestions so far. We will have refugees, when another board shuts down, such as WEF, but that's hardly the only way we find new members. Tourist sounds too temporary. Could we give people choices? (Check One)
